Safe to say it won't be back at all and quick look at the official forum tells us it's been abandoned by devs.
Error 73003 still not fixed since 2011 and considering it was always online game you're basically screwed now

Update:
Seems like EA/Maxis fixed the connection problems so its back on Steam store now

This issue is account related, my old account didn't seem to go through the error message, so I contacted Origin support and they without any problem gave me a new serial key and told me to make a new account. I made one and redeemed the game on Origin and with a new email and such. Then I wondered if I could use the new email and password assigned with the new serial key to log in on the Steam Darkspore version, and it worked perfectly, although I did noticed that if I screwed up the log in info more than twice it would block me again with the error, but nothing serious since I could just boot the game up again. And yeah, i'm playing it as I type this.
EDIT: Well now that getting the Steam version is technically impossible, then simply ask for a new key from EA (if you got the game before) and play it on Origin.

Fixing Error 73003 is very easy.

Since you already need an EA account to play it, just register the game CD-Key to your Origin account, and then log in (in the game) with your Origin login information.

Edit: Whoops, apparently that's some other error. Never mind, carry on.

I played Darkspore on Steam a year and a half ago or so successfully, now anytime I try it gives me 73003. I contacted EA support and after trying to add the game to a new account and it still not working on the completely new account they gave me a new game. They asked me to keep it around 20 dollars, but seemed happy to double the price as I spent about a month going back and forth with them trying to troubleshoot it. After that my friend was all of a sudden able to get his copy replaced within 5 minutes of chatting with someone, though they seemed more strict about price limitations at that point. Just an FYI to anyone out there who has the game.

You are a shameful disgrace and a poopy head. Dishonor befalls your cow by your admissions here today.

I actually like the game as well. Until I ran into error 73003 and was unable to log in anymore -_-

It's a real shame, too.

Have it on Origin, have yet to play it....was it any good?

I've only played it in beta but back then it was boring as hell. Most ARPGs out there are better, in my opinion.

This is exactly why people hate EA and Origin. I'm not trying to start a flame war here. Just stating FACTS.

EA poorly supported Steam before Origin, but after it it became absolutely ridiculous. They have no problem taking our money but have every problem with people legitimately complaining about how they support their titles. If you can't make it work on modern systems, don't release it!

The biggest issue with EA is that even when they do have patches, they often don't even release them for Steam versions or release them very, very, very late.

Maybe a silly question, since I don't own the game, but does it have LAN capability? Wouldn't solve the log-in/account issue, but otherwise I'm wondering if this might be a situation where Tuungle would do the trick (online play using LAN), so that the "official" servers would no longer be needed.

Feel free to give it a shot, but this is the reply support gave me:

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

As with most software products, we do not offer refunds or exchanges for purchases made on our website or through the Steam Client. This includes, but is not limited to, games, Early Access Games, software, gifted or traded purchases, downloadable content, subscriptions, and in-game items/currency.

We will make an exception and refund titles that are still listed as available for Pre-Purchase on our website. The refund request must be received prior to the official release date for the item. You can see when a pre-purchased title is scheduled to officially unlock by viewing the green information bar on its store page.

This only applies to preorders purchased from your account; preordered titles received or sent through the Steam Trading system cannot be refunded. We do not offer refunds for Early Access Games.
