I prefer Sandbox games (SimCity, Minecraft, Terraria, etc) as the only limiting factor is your imagination and the amount of time you have.

Story rich freely exploration rpgs; Doesn't matter if they're turn based, 2d, first person, etc.
Theres many sub-genres i love that i think need more love but i can't help but put this flavor of rpg above all else (done right). Theres plenty of amazing immersive games on all genres but rpg goes up a notch with immersion- from commonly having more means and details of interactions to the whole branching of storyline, dialogue choices and world/story reacting to you.
From Fallouts (original and bethesda ones) to a bunch of jrpgs to many obscure titles out there. Heck even inquisitor wich is a diablo-clone action rpg (rarely a example of rpg, they're just brainless action) with things like branching storylines and level of detail is an example. I don't like most jrpgs from a perspective of mechanics and or story (generally i hate one or the other, if not both) but damn from immersion to the 'visit wonderfull new worlds' they're right on spot dead on.

And you have a great taste! ;P
Fallout is one of my Favs, but i'll also mention Neverwinter Nights, which was my first mindblowing PC experience, and also the dragon quest franchise :)

Can't say there's a specific genre but if I have to pick I'd go with RPG.
What is appealing to me, regardless of genre and most commonly found in RPGs is a story focused game with an interesting cast of characters. Without those two elements I might enjoy a game but it'll never have any chance of entering my "favourites". Only exceptions are Management/Tycoon games and Board Games that are limited to very specific formulas.

Third Person Shooter Platformer.
I like 3rd person shooters, I like platformers, and I like games that let me explore. This genre combines all of them.
Too bad there are really only two games/series in it ("Jak & Daxter" and "Ratchet & Clank"), though Psychonauts is close (due to some of the powers), and Metroid Prime is basically this except in 1st person with heavy emphasis on the exploration aspect.

I love sim games the most. They allow me to live a life I can't have, or to create worlds that don't exist. To me, they are the epitome of unleashing my creativity and imagination. The Sims, Cities: Skylines, Planet Coaster, Elite: Dangerous, Civilization, etc. All great games I have lost so many hours to.
Alternatively, I also love strategy games like Heroes of Might and Magic III and Age of Empires II. I just love being able to build cities and kingdoms and then go on adventures and create my own lore.

Dark Souls. Cause I got gud playing it. Seriously, it helped me in other games like Monster Hunter.

My favorite genre is OpenWorld, idk I just like the freedom to explore and do things without being forced to progress the story.
For a more specific game genre I'd probably say RPG, because I like leveling, collecting and doing quests I suppose.

Third-Person Action-Adventure(-Platformer-RPG-etc.)
Examples: Tomb Raider series, Batman Arkham series, Prince of Persia series, Psychonauts, Beyond Good & Evil, Darksiders series, Outcast, Indiana Jones series, Force Unleashed series, Alice series, lots of console-only games...
It's just a wonderful feeling to have a beautiful gameworld (doesn't have to be an open world) you can maneuver your character around in and try to figure out how to progress.

I enjoy team co-op games that have a focus on human players vs. AI bots(Left4Dead, Killing Floor, Payday, etc.). I think why I like this type of genre is the amount of responsibility each person, in a 4-6 person group, has that is not too little or too much. Also, AI opponents do not boast or brag when they win unless they are programmed to do so. :P

Story-rich RPGs have recently found a way to my heart. Still, my single favourite genre has always been adventure games, and I mean a wide range of games - from classic point-and-click like Gabriel Knight series, The Longest Journey or Sanitarium to modern story-driven games like The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Oxenfree or Night in the Woods. I'm ok with first or third person view, with tons of puzzles or just good walking simulators, basically, anything well-written and atmospheric will do. Just don't offer Myst-like games to me. I hate Myst-like games.

It may be a sub-genre or a specific kind of game
Please, tell your feelings about it (and give examples if you can)
