My first puzzle.

Short bundle train (requires CV1) ending with non-bundled The Wolf Among Us (requires CV 3).
Giveaways end Jul 20, 2015 1:00 pm EDT (US East coast).
A few hints will appear approximately 7 PM (19h00) July 14, 2015. Hints have arrived.

I don't do a lot of Steamgifts puzzles, but I've done a few. I've wanted to do one for a while now. People have different styles for puzzles-- there's no good or bad way. But I've always wanted mine to be as follows:

  • I would mention any level restrictions and deadlines;
  • I would mention some/all of the games: I like to know that my effort is going to be worth it, and so should you;
  • I would make answers as unambiguous as possible: you shouldn't have to read my mind;
  • I wouldn't add any additional hoops to jump through: just answer the questions;
  • Everything is essentially Googlable;
  • You won't need a PhD in anything to solve it.

I'm doing one of those ego-puzzles: questions about things I like.
Basically, I don't want to have to research my own questions too much! =)
I'm sure you've heard this before, but I don't think there's anything [Edit: except for one or two questions] especially difficult with Google by your side. I guess I'll find out.

ONE MORE THING: I check every winner of my giveaways (except whitelists). If you have re-gifted or not activated wins, I will report you and request a re-roll.

Step into the abyss.

I managed to get them all except for 9. Now that's a toughie lol >< Gonna keep trying though!
It is nice learning things about your interests from the puzzle though. You have a wide range of surprising interests and hobbies ^ ^

LOL, thank you for working on it, whitelist buddy. =)
Yes, number 9 appears to be the hardest, but based on the hint you might be able to surmise the game show, and from there...

An additional hint was given for 9:
"[...] So what extremely popular American game show has something related to luck in its title, as the hint suggested? Then, what extremely popular choral work's text is based on a very similar thing-- as you can tell by the very first movement?

4/10... and all of them with help of Mr. G, this puzzle is quite hard, I'm only a football fan (what americans call soccer, you know, the original game that was officially called football).

Could you please give some hints for Q7, Q8, Q10?

I added some more hints. And yes-- I would expect that anybody would need "Mr. G." to answer at least some of the questions.
If not-- I'd like to meet that person as we have a lot in common! =)

Most of the questions weren't too hard but I've been stuck on Q10 for a day ;_; any chance of an extra hint ?
Also I'm not completely sure what a comedian means exactly. It's someone who does stand-up, right ?

9 years ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A comedian doesn't necessarily do stand-up...a subset of them do. Many of them might have done stand-up at one point, as it seems like a common way to break into the business.
e.g., Jim Carey was still a comedian (a "comic actor") even though his stand-up days were long gone.

Hmm ok. What do they do ? Is an actor a comedian ?

Permalink

Ha, just saw your edit after posting my comment. I thought comedians would be people doing stand-up, shows, .. but that an actor wasn't a comedian

9 years ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It is perhaps a nuance, and perhaps not universally agreed upon. But in my mind, a comic actor is still a comedian. I would specify "stand-up comedian" to express that they're still (or only) doing stand-up.
Once a stand-up comic, always a comedian?

Q6 is a pain in the ***. Checked half of the titles and still nothing (I don't know anything about the NFL, so I'm not excluding any titles - not sure if that term is literal or abstract). Google doesn't want to be helpful as well :P

9 years ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My guess is that starting with the hint to try to find possible NFL terms, then cross-referencing with the songs might be the way to go. But yes, I suppose you can brute force a solution...eventually. =)

9 years ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Also, it is a true NFL term, not something generic like "cheerleader" or "crowd" or "stadium."

Uhm, anything I'm missing in Q9? I tried to go by all the popular TV Shows of America, and tried possible titles (That might be included in translated choirs), it didn't work. I tried to go by known/masterwork choirs from Beethoven/Bach/etc. and checked for their translations but nothing fits, really. It could be way better if the tip was what language is the original choir or the century it was composed perhaps. So any little more hint maybe?

Note that it's a popular game show, not just a TV show. So what extremely popular American game show has something related to luck in its title, as the hint suggested? Then, what extremely popular choral work's text is based on a very similar thing-- as you can tell by the very first movement?

9 years ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So I guess the answer won't be the game show title? Maybe I'm missing that you mean title as in logo or just textual as I've been searching? Either ways I've been trying for past 2 days solely #9 alone lol. I guess I'll quit soon.

9 years ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

As the question asks, the answer will be the choral work whose text is based on the game show title (coincidentally, of course), but the answer will not be the game show title itself.
And, as the hint says, the text (and therefore the game show title) is based on something related to luck.
I mean game show title as in...the game show title. It's not a trick, or the logo...just the title of the show.

Great! And I feel like I didn't give any real new information...I just shoved the existing information/hints in your face. =)
Although actually, sometimes knowing that something isn't a trick is very useful. Helps keeping your brain from trying to contort things unnecessarily.
In any event, glad you persevered and solved. I hope there's something for you in the train. =)

I barely missed the giveaways. Managed to click through quickly enough to see "Ended six seconds ago". Q9 threw me off; I kept guessing variants of O Fortuna instead of Carmina Burana. Curse your 30-second wait period, ITH!

No fault of your own, of course. Five days is way more than enough time to finish the puzzle, had I found the puzzle just a bit earlier. Still, it was fun to learn some new things. Thanks for the puzzle, and thanks for the giveaways. I hope I'm in time to catch your next puzzle!

Thanks for the sympathy, but you are definitely not at fault. You clearly stated the deadline in your posting. I'm in a different time zone, though, and I thought I had a little bit more time to solve the puzzle than I actually did. I'll blame it on too little sleep last night. By the time my brain caught up to me to remind me that I had about half an hour, rather than about 90 minutes as I originally thought, I was invested in the puzzle and wanted to see it through. The Wolf Among Us is a wishlisted game, which is what got me started on the puzzle in the first place, but the puzzle was satisfying enough to see to completion even when I was sure I wouldn't be able to finish in time. But by some lucky guesses (and quick Google-Fu), I managed to get everything correct except Q8 and Q9 with just under ten minutes to spare. That definitely got the adrenaline pumping for me as I raced to finish in time, but too many incorrect guesses had me waiting for too long, and I finished the puzzle right as time expired. If nothing else, it was an exciting experience for me to finish with such a tight deadline, the puzzle was interesting and fun, and I am actually quite proud that I was able to complete the puzzle in the time allotted, even if I didn't reach the giveaways in time. I'm sorry I missed my chance to win, too, but I honestly had fun trying to get there, and I look forward to your next puzzle. So thank you for the giveaways, and thank you for the puzzle.

(And as an aside, I've been wanting to make a puzzle myself for a while now, and your rules are a great set of guidelines to follow. So thanks for that, too!)

That is pretty exciting. And thank you for the kind words.
But you should probably re-read the "ONE MORE THING" in my post above.

9 years ago
Permalink

Regarding the "ONE MORE THING" part of your post, do you think that I re-gifted Shattered Haven because I won the game and then later gifted a copy of the game? Because I did win the game and activated it on my account, and then later obtained an additional copy in a bundle.

No, I'm not referring to that. But what happened with Skyrim and Silent Service?
Looks like you "fixed" Skyrim. Although you won Skyrim (three weeks ago) but activated Skyrim Legendary Edition (today).
Please keep it simple and just activate all won gifts. :-D

Is there a tool you are using to check, or are you doing it manually? If it's a tool, could I have a link? I would like to see what's happening, since I do activate games after I win them, and wonder if there's something wonky with the tool or the SteamAPI. I just confirmed that Silent Service is in my library right now and showing as "Purchased" on June 7 of this year. And I did activate a copy of Skyrim Legendary Edition earlier today in order to add the DLC to my library. I picked it up on sale, and it was actually slightly cheaper to buy the Legendary Edition for all the DLC together than buying the DLC separately, even if I were to wait for it to go on sale.

I think there is a tool, but I did my check manually.

If you want to streamline the process in the future, here is the tool I was shown: SGTools.tk. I ran it on myself just now to confirm everything was showing up properly, and I see why you might have overlooked Silent Service: the game is no longer in the Steam API database. Which is baffling, seeing that the game is still available in the Steam store. I was surprised to hear that it might not show up in my library if you checked manually, but I opened my library in an Incognito window and confirmed that you are absolutely correct: the game does not appear to be in my library. But I assure you that it is in my library, and I can take a screenshot to prove it, if necessary.

Thanks for the heads up, and I hope you have a great week!
