How about hyhy? He's one of the few who went the other way (started with DotA -> Dota 2 -> LoL). Not to mention he features in Valve's Free to Play documentary.
From what I've seen though, most people these days start with LoL not Dota 2, and only give Dota 2 a spin later on, before deciding on either sticking with Dota 2 or returning to LoL.

That was supposed to be for the DLC/Cosmetic items pack you could purchase (which granted beta access as well of course), except people were giving the free invite key instead, so it had to be pulled.

The keys/gifts were always free. (From Valve anyway, of course many people sold their free stuff to others.) The only thing you could pay for was some kind of starter pack which also granted you access to the beta at the same time. You were however paying for the items, and not access. Games is, and always was, F2P.

since public custom games is how dota all began with wc3 and since people might want to do some different modes with their one map such as aram or no cooldown mode

Let me state one thing and ask about one thing.
Statement: In Dota2 you can enter chatrooms dedicated specifically for people wanting to do a custom mode like aram or no cooldown mode. Therefore, one could say that custom matchmaking in Dota2 is semi-public (I certainly can play my arams with randoms whenever I feel like it).
Question: Is there an option in LoL to change the settings of a custom match in any significant way? I.e. turning 'off' some lanes, doing no cooldowns, trying playing against less players but with some initial gold/level advantage - stuff like that?

Could you actually do a no cooldown dota 2 custom game right now? but yeah there arent any specific settings ways to drastically change the game in league of legends so most custom game types would have to be done with the honor system; however, because of popular demand, there is at least a map and queue specifically for aram so that at least you dont have to worry about people cheating there. Also, while you could play custom games by going into chatrooms and some people do this in LoL, there may be some gamemodes that you wouldn't know about, and thereby not know the chatroom, that would be easier to find via a public custom game browser. There are some custom game modes in LoL that i wouldn't know about if it weren't for the match browser.

I guess it's nice to have a public custom games system but I don't feel like it's a HUGE advantage for LoL - those who want to try some crazy custom games in Dota2 are usually easily able to do so.

well going by my brief experience of dota2 pvp id say its not limited to lol, i ended up just doing vs ai matches cause no one appears to give a rat's ass if you suck and let you have fun, cant say the genre hols much interest to me though i got a beta invite off a friend and figured id try it but its not my thing, perhaps partly the noob unfriendly people but that doesnt appear to stop most people so their you go maybe its just me

Nope, he wasn't reffering to anyone personally, he was referring to whole bunch of people (namely all MOBA players - btw, I'm not even a MOBA player, but still cas see how it is offensive, even if it does not concern me myself). Try playing Modern Warfare on the Xbox some time. Smack-talk over mic is like a metagame there. Unbelievable the kind of crap you can hear coming out of peoples' mouths, there. And often from frightfully young kids, too. My nephews plays it and I always tell him to just turn voice chat off if possible in games like that, and just be good, better than the others, hand their asses to them, and just be quiet.

So on League of Legends, there was this Fiddlesticks(a champion) who wanted to lane with Thresh(champion) at the bottom lane. I said why won't we have a jungler(What is it?) And Fiddlesticks said, "because junglers suck". We ended up having a Katarina(champion) roaming around, feeding(dying over and over again). And the Thresh went to the middle lane, while Fiddlesticks and Caitlyn were bottom(this confused me, because they just switched randomly). They reported me for verbal abuse when Fiddlesticks was the one that said, "stfu gator dumbass bitch(I was using Renekton, a champion that looked like an alligator)". This is why LoL is hated by many, because of the amount of dumb shitheads playing it.
