Solid list but it's missing Half Life.

I was on the verge of adding it. But frankly the story of Half Life is not that good. The gameplay is amazing, the visual design is solid, and the way the story is told is well done, but the story itself is just very simplistic, there is little dilemma or internal conflict.

You can't really have your cake and eat it too :), the stick of the game is that YOU're Gordon Freeman, everything is what you experience, so your own experience defines the game, not the character, without cutscenes or voice acting your character is just your vessel in the game, the design doesn't allow for internal conflict and it was unique at its time. It's not about Gordon, it's about you.

I disagree. The same could be said for Portal 1 and 2 and a bunch of other games as well, that managed to deliver far better stories. So I don't see this as an excuse for a simplistic plot.

You can't possibly imply Portal had a complex plot, it's pretty basic and straightforward. If anything using that as a standard only helps prove my point that you don't need RPG levels of story to make a great game. Sometimes simple isn't a bad thing.

Portal's plot is blatantly simple, it wasn't even supposed to be a huge deal, it was just something they messed around with that they shoved in the Orange Box for added value, Valve was surprised by its massive success. To claim otherwise is just nonsensical.

I don't know why you're getting bent out of shape over this. You and another person experienced the same game. You both interpreted it differently. Thus, opinions were born.

There is nothing "nonsensical" about two people having different views on the same plot, especially regarding its depth.

I think you live in a world were all opinions have equal value no matter how bad they are. I do not. Some people out there think Trump is an excellent president. Should be obvious that's not the case. That person implied a very basic plot wasn't exactly that as an argument against my point so I had the right to debate that. And I can discuss this with that person peacefully like we were doing, he/she doesn't need a lawyer to argue their case :).

And I'm not bent out of shape over anything, just debating something calmly, you're seeing conflict where there isn't one. This is a forum, that's what it's for, talking, we don't have to agree, discussion is healthy.

Portal had a far more creative setting than Half Life and Portal 2 managed to deliver an engaging backstory to the environment and the characters. While neither of those were the pinnacle of deep and compelling narratives, they both delivered their stories through gameplay. Far more thought was put into the environmental design and there was some drama between the characters and in the end it felt like we have learned something, as all the characters, with the exception of the protagonist went through a kind of character arc.
This couldn't be said about Half Life. Ideological conflict is far more interesting than a contest of strength,

Well see you jumped to Portal 2 which expands on the first by actually giving it more plot through backstory. Same could be said about Half Life 2 which expands greatly on the first game in every aspect including story.

Both Portal and HL worked greatly without a complex plot. That's all I'm saying, taxing HL because of its simple story is just nitpicking.

I don't know why people complain about the protagonist being voiced. I find it weird when characters are not voiced. I am not reading it aloud, hearing myself 😆

The main complaint, at least for me was the new dialoge system and not the being voiced part. You can only guess what the character is going to say and often end up with a choice you don't like. Not to mention the speechcheck which is just a diceroll :(

And the best part is the character generation does not take six years like 3 and NV. I absolutely hate starting new characters in those games, especially 3.

I never cared about this part as I play first person only...at least in the older ones...but its an interesting point xD
My main complaint about F4 is the lack of choices...you could argue that F3 and FNV didn't have a lot of meaningful choices either but it wasn't as obvious.

just my opinion on that xD

I like to customize things so I guess I'll see whether they streamlined too much or just enough when they eventually release the full version. From what I've been reading it's a bit too much though :P

This reminds me I got to finish FONV at some point. Hopefully, I can still get it going with my latest mod list and just roll back a few hours from where a mod wrecked my perfect playthrough last time :D

Remember Me was such a beautiful game and the mechanic of remixing people memories had so much potential. It's just a shame it was so linear and wasted so much time on fights with stupid third-rate zombie knock-offs.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein was mostly perfect.

It's a good game - I just think it could have been so much more if the decisions you made mucking about with peoples memories affected the progress and outcome of the game instead of just finding the right thing to do to progress to the next stage. And I think that extra complexity could have easily come at the expense of a bunch of mediocre fight scenes.
