When do you think piracy is okay?

Even though I don't have that much money to invest on gaming (I'm from Brazil, gaming here is like raising twins) I always try to buy the games I'm interested on, or that I once played a pirate copy of. But as I'm taking a look at my steam wishlist I realize that not every game (or dev) there deserves my money, but I still wanna play them. Should I download the pirate version and only buy the game if I really enjoy it or should I buy the game, no matter what, because someone invested money and time on developing it? (I would never do that to a indie dev)

What about you, what's your relation with piracy? When do you think it's reasonable to do it? Is it ever?

my personal opinion is that if there is no legal way to obtain the game/movie/music in question, then it is morally permitted.

You can refund game if u didnt like or worth the money untill 2 hours played .not sure about 2 hours but last time i know it was 2 hours. Also u can sell cards like me to buy games on steam.i bought many AAA games with money i earned by selling cards. But u have to collect free games with cards(check reddit few times a day). There are many other ways. You can enter little giveaways with cards here though.Use Tremor and get points with easy task and buy cheapest game with cards.Join competition on OpiumPulses also u earned points there too that u can spend to buy game by daily visiting.Join competition every hour on Orlygift. There s mobile app for that too.
And i do have some games with cards and i can share some with u.Add me if u interest
Well this not the answer of topic but i hope its helpfull ^v^

It's not really anyone's business but your own.

Everyone has opinions on it but it will never be enough for some people even if you have your specific circumstances on why you pirate.
So just do your own thing. If you buy the game later on, that's on you. If you don't, then that's on you as well. You don't need to seek vindication from other people. Hell I doubt any of your IRL friends would judge you hard if you did.

However, if you're not spending money on the games you want and buy cheap bundles "just because", then just stop buying those useless bundles and get the games you want.

When purchasing a game is not possible or would not benefit the developer, honestly. It's still not legal. But I don't see the harm, especially with most retro stuff. As for modern games, try to get the games on sale and be honest with yourself about what you would play. Also, make it a habit of always finishing a game. That way, you get more bang for your buck and have less time to play other games :D so no need to buy as many games. Lol.

I think that its easy - Dont have money? = No games! Play FreeToPlay!
You can also get a lot of good games for free....(Without pirating)

1 - When there's no legal way to get the game. No One Lives Forever is a good example.
2 - When you want to try the game beforehand (maybe you don't know if your rig is powerful enough to run the game) and there's no Demo of the game.
3 - You actually own the game but you want to run a certain patched version to run it (for speedrunning purposes). But even then you can run games in offline mode so, this is something of a technical issue rather than morality.

Other than these three, I cannot think of a reason that force you to pirate a game.

Secondhand software doesn't help the developers or the publishers. When I meant by the first point, is that there's no way for them to gain anymore. Moreso, in NOLF's case, both parties don't claim the IP, therefore the entire IP is in limbo. When game don't have demo

as long as you buy the games you like - sure, then it's fine. and i mean buy for full price right after testing it. not a year later on a big sale. if you do that, you didn't use the pirated copy as a demo. you used it as a pirated copy.

Piracy is never wrong and never will be, but unfortunately you can't pirate a multiplayer game's servers :(

When you can afford PC to play to games on.

But in the end it's up to you, nobody is going to sue you over it*. Only CD Project Red (The Witcher 2) tried sending bills to illegal downloaders, but stopped due to internet had.

  • this is not legal advice :P

But seriously, if you can't afford their games, nor think they deserve your money, then why would you pirate them in the first place?

Best approach: play something that you can afford, and that's decent enough / worth your time!

I'm brazilian as well, so, I know how it is to be poor in this country. I used to buy 3ds games, when I could afford it, some years ago. Nowadays I'm just buying steam games, but I still play through emulators, mainly because I can't afford to buy them fisically by now.
My laptop isn't that good to run the lastest releases, but I'd probably pirate them if I could run. Then, when I could, I'd but them. I've know great franchises I like by pirating, so, it's not that bad. Most of my 3ds/ds games I played on emulator before purcharsing (like Disgaea, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor, Final Fantasy, Golden Sun, Pokémon, etc). It's a nice way to know if it's worth the money and I think the companies should develop trial versions of their games more frequently for that purpose.

If you, who is reading, is not a brazilian, you probably don't know how unfair are the prices of games here. With the minimum wage, you can buy like 3 console games, they are taxed high because of some shitty law that includes games in luck games category. With luck, you might buy a console like PS4 or XONE with 2 minimum wages here, so I think you can picture it out. (I'm against minimum wage, btw)

Anyway, play as you can and don't be ashamed of piracy if you can't afford to buy the games. Just remember to do it when you can, if you liked it. Do not care so much about what other people think about it. You and only you know about your life and your hardships, so, never expect to be "accepted" by everybody.

When do you think piracy is okay?

  • when you're already spending money on gunz to dufend yeself frum da gooberminte (scraping by)
  • when your (me) has the dindu-nuffins + gibsmedat4free mentality (no conscience)
  • when you merely tried it and didn't like it ... a slippery slope, try that with a hooker and you know what i mean (fair use)
  • when its gatekeeper software - apps, formats, enc., systems meant to keep you out unless you pay (just a premium hook)
  • when you already bought the same/re-named "polished HD ver" already on another system ... (justified but unlawful ownership)
  • when you don't share it among friends and their mothers (not excessive)

When developers don't give a shit about the players.

When they monetarize the game instead of sharing their passion, including indie developers. Hiding cut content behind some DLC which has the same price as the base game, abondoning on Early Access, never fixing achievements/game-breaking bugs even though reported billions of times. Developers that release a single game with Deluxe, Silver, Gold, Premium and Uber Diamond editions (unless these only include stuff like artwork, music, behind the scenes etc.)

Who gets money from me? Respectable developers.

I bought the Witcher 3 twice. I don't care if it's EA, I bought the shit out of old EA games like Dead Space, Mirror's Age etc. I paid more than 60$ for Path of Exile even though it's %100 free-to-play (and looks like I will be paying even more). When developers actually listen what players want or at least try to find a common ground.

When a game isn't available legally. That's it.

I have done it outside those circumstances, but out of greed/laziness - I could not reasonably claim that it was not the wrong thing to do.

I think a lot of people do pirate or maybe even bought pirated items anyway so I'm just gonna go and say I did play cracked/pirate games.
My (I think) simple rule about pirate games is:

  • if it's a non-indie game and I'm not sure if it's gonna be good (or worth my money), I'm gonna go for pirate version only if no demo is available
  • if it's a kinda old game (maybe 5+ years, but preferably 8+ years) either Indie or not and it's very expensive (or just expensive), I'm gonna go for pirate
  • if it's from a very rich dev and I want to play the game, I might go for pirate
  • it it's a very old game, and I can't find it on any store I will go for pirate (depends on how much I want to play the game)
  • if it's an indie game, or is develop with love by a somewhat known dev, I'm never gonna pirate it

but back to answer your main question:

When do you think piracy is okay?

well all the time, or maybe most of the time, piracy is not okay
unless of course as Julianne mention above
I somewhat agree on the second point though, unless you really play it for and only for the sake of trying the game, like maybe trying the gameplay or the control, only then it is okay

peace out~

it's quite simple. if someone can't afford it, i have no problem with him pirating the shit out of games. ^^

games that are not available anymore (or not in a specific country) are of course also fine.

that's where the "buy the game if I enjoy it" comes in

"buy if i enjoy" is a very specific payment agreement and is not applicable to most commercial games. some games indeed support that kind of payment, and state it quite clearly, you can't miss or mistake it when available. if not stated, it's not possible.

who thinks like that just looks for some comfortable formula to make his conscence easy, but you can't just steal something, use it and later pay it according to some subjective personal reason. things don't work like that, or at least should not.

Not stealing, nope. It would be stealing if you took it and someone else didnt use it. Not morally right since you are using something without paying for it, even if it makes your life better, you arent hurting anyone, although you arent helping anyone either.

Ideally piracy would be used to try shit out before buying, so you dont support a shitty game. The problem is when people who do have the money to buy games, decide not to cause they can get away with it.

Just wanted to state that, although I'm tired of piracy discussions.

i cannot agree that taking without paying a good that somebody produces and somebody sells is not stealing. this is not about preventing others using a good, this is about taking away something being sold from the store without paying. you are definitely hurting the seller of the good. if he wasn't hurted by free distribution of his product, he would problably do that in first place; but he doesn't, does he?
anybody misundertanding the words borrow and pirate? go to your department store, ask for borrowing something and promise that you will pay, maybe. i would enjoy that video, if posted.

The whole concept of "deserving" is completely false. One may think the dev doesn't "deserve" their money but on what grounds do they "deserve" the game? Do they even "deserve" to be born in the first place? And what about dead people, did they "deserve" it as well? All of that is complete BS. You want it - you buy it, you don't buy it - you don't get it. Sure, you can steal it if you're stronger or more cunning, but that comes at a price as well (you can get caught and even if not, you have to live with the fear of getting caught). Those are real concepts and not some "deserving" thing.
