Humble RPG Bundle

3 Tiers, 7 Games

03 Aug 2019 - 24 Sep 2019

Note: Borderlands GOTY Enhanced seems to be region locked.

Since only few people buy T3, it's pretty difficult to establish what kind of keys HB delivers.

The notification when creating the gift link from EU mentions that it can be redeemed only in the following countries

Time to Deep-Sky-Dive for a BTA purchase?

View Results
[Tier 1] Cheapest Souls-like gaming around. Can't say no.
[BTA] My Cat and I are on a Quest for a cheap BTA price.
[Tier 3] I don't have Borderlands, or I forgot that I had it.
[Have] Kinda rebundly, eh.
[Skip] The Tyranny of my wallet compels me to skip this.
[Complaint] Borderlands GOTY: 2015 in Tier 1, 2017 in Tier 1, 2019 for $15. Seems legit.

Tier 2 looks appealing, but I'm a bit put off by the lack of DLCs. I feel like I'm not getting the complete product.

That is the idea, of course...the only way they can price them so low (T2) is based on projected DLC sales. But there's no obligation to buy them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

nah. it's priced so low because the games are old(ish) and nobody's really buying them anymore.

Everyone willing to buy the games for even a little bit of money, bought them during one of the many sale of the last few years.

True-- I shouldn't have said, "the only way." But I think the prospect of selling DLC motivated them to place them on T2. And as others have noted, I think they miscalculated the appeal of Borderlands GOTY Enhanced.

Part of it is hopes for the DLC, part of it is, at this point they're probably getting just a few sales a month from those games, so 40,000 humble bundle purchases (as of this moment) at, what, an average of $0.70 each, must be a nice one-time boost.

Quick math. 40,000 purchases at $0.70 each is $28,000. That's more money than if they sold a thousand games at $30 each, after Steam, GMG, Fanatical, etc. take their cut.
At this stage in the lifecycle of the game, I don't see them selling 1000 full-priced copies in a year.

Gearbox logic: Even though Borderlands 1 has been in several bundles already, including 1-dollar tiers, and we give the Enhanced editions for free to anyone who already owns it, let's ask the highest amount for it! We smart!

Humble logic: We are making a role-playing games-only bundle where barely half of the games are RPGs, and we put a shooter as the main feature in it! We smart!

At least the games are good, even if the bundle title is slightly misleading.

in all fairness to just one point, Borderlands is a FPS/RPG hybrid

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nah, it never was. It is as much of an RPG as No Man's Sky or DayZ are. Or the recent CoDs, for that matter. Itis a pretty good looter-shooter, but that won't transcend genres.

I disagree. It's basically a first person Diablo.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, I know, I used to call it Western Diablo. :D But I also cannot consider that an RPG, it is a hack & slash looter.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, Diablo is clearly an ARPG, and so is Borderlands or any action game with "focus" on loot and/or leveling/skills.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But by that definition, the recent Call of Duty/Battlefield games are ARPGs as well. You have XP, skills, and random loot. The latter is the entire focus of the games, to boot.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I'm aware it's flawed, ever since I played that need for speed that had leveling and you spent point improving your pilot's skills, haha. But I think all RPGs are PvE-focused, and so are ARPGs. Maybe this reduces the margin of error enough, then? Maybe it should be a hack'sn slash as well with RPG elements then? No clue.

it just depend on whether you're taking a more narrow definition of RPG, or a broader one.
I'm somewhat influenced by having started playing in ye olden days. My first RPG was Wizardry, one of the first, and most influential computer RPGs of all time, the synopsis of which is indistinct from diablo (small town consisting just of a shop, healing, resting; go into a dungeon and kill stuff until you run low on health to come back out. Pick up better equipment and go further down with each successive try). Diablo is basically Wizardry with procedurally generated levels.
I actually consider Borderlands more of an RPG than Diablo 1, but probably on par with diablo-likes such as Victor Vran and Van Helsing

This is such a deal I have to get another one to give to friends. How do I do that with Humble. If I try to buy another bundle will it recogize it as a second bundle, or consider it as an increase in my donation from my first purchase? Do I buy a bundle for a friend and send it to my own email? What do people do who buy multiple bundles from Humble?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know what the limit is( might be two?) but you can buy another bundle and "get a giftable link", it will be sent to your email, there are multiple options if you check "This is a gift". I got a whole bundle for a friend too, for Cat Quest, and I mean, PoE and Tyranny are good but too long games for many people but oh well, at that price it's a deal.

The Borderlands is best to stay away from anyway. The devs will never fix the issues that plague the game.

That Borderlands GOTY isn't going to help sell the T3. Been discounted and bundled enough by now that people won't be paying that much extra for it. (Also counting the un-enhanced version, because everyone who got that has the enhanced too).

BTA tier looks tempting though

Why is Borderlands region locked? They listed like half of all the countries, but not Canada... I wanted to gift this game to a friends (as it seems like the best deal that we're going to get in a while...), but now I'm just going to ask for a refund...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'd be really interested in knowing what they mention there as region locks. You're one of the few people who bought T3, so any info regarding that is very valuable.
However, if you see region locks when you create a gift link, that doesn't necessarily mean that the key actually has locks (it happens extremely often that the region locks displayed there are not real and the key is ROW). In order to establish this, you'd need to know the exact subid that the key activates - are you able to find out which it is?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sadly, I won't be able to provide that info. I've requested a refund and I'm most likely going to get tier 2 instead.

Also, the region lock lists regions the game can be redeemed in:

AD AE AF AL AO AT BA BE BF BG BH BI BJ BW CD CF CG CH CI CM CS CV CY CZ DE DJ EE EG EH ER ES ET FI FR GA GB GG GH GM GN GQ GR GW HR HU IE IL IM IQ IR IS IT JE JO KE KM KW LB LI LR LS LT LU LV LY MA MC ME MG MK ML MR MT MU MW MZ NA NE NG NL NO OM PL PS PT QA RE RO RS RW SA SC SD SE SH SI SK SL SM SN SO ST SY SZ TD TG TN TR TZ UG VA XK YE YT ZA ZM ZW

lists regions the game can be redeemed in

Is this the list you see when you create a gift link?
From what I recall, it's usually the opposite: the list should show the countries in which the key cannot be activated.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, I'm sure of that. I can't really double check anymore as it got refunded for me already. I got told by Humble support that the game can only be redeemed in EU (even though it includes a bunch of other countries), and as you can see it includes European countries (including my own).

Not bad, not bad. T3 is a joke, but I bought T2 for Tyranny and I'm probably going to play Deep Sky Derelicts, I have it on my wishlist. Cat Quest looks cute, gave it to a friend because he wanted it for his girlfriend who loved the demo of the game.

I usually don't like playing games without DLC's because I feel like I don't get the whole content, but in case of Tyranny it seems like DLC's are kinda bad and not even worth bothering with (according to the reviews), so I guess this is a game I can just enjoy playing through base game not having to worry I'm missing something by not having DLC's?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Tyranny is extremely solid by itself. It is a shame they blundered badly with the DLCs, given the reviews, I also didn't buy them but the added content do not seem crucial at all.

This is one of the very few games I find to be worth tplaying more than once as there is a vast amount of variables that can be changed in repeated playthroughs.
