I'm not using headphones... but you should pick the purple ones ;)

Ehh, I'm bad with colors and I'm on an uncalibrated monitor at work, so it's probably just a light purple.

Not really good with colours myself (my girlfriend says I mistake light green for light blue), but I've got lots of different monitors here, and those look bright neon pink to me on all of them :D

I've used many different headsets in the past: Logitech, HP, Plantronics, and noticed that even the most expensive ones would self-destruct after one or two years.
Now I just buy the cheapest rubbish I can get from China (as long as the claimed frequency response looks good), and those also tend to last one or two years.
Comment has been collapsed.
the brands you mentioned aren't the "most expensive ones", more like the "walmart" type of headsets in the market which mainly relies on gimmicks,
If you want quality headsets, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x is a great starting enthusiast headset that I use on the go for 1.5 years now
and my Sennheiser HD 600 would be the high end standard which I use on my desktop rig for gaming + music would be
Another misconcenption about headsets is they're not great solo, you're going to need to invest on a somewhat decent DAC/headphone AMP

What you say is absolutely correct, but I meant the most expensive between them, i.e. the most expensive I would buy, not the most expensive on the market.
I've also used professional stuff ages ago when I briefly worked for a radio station; I've never seen cheaper than about £160 for the most basic studio headphones (without a microphone), and you can buy AKG headphones (again, without a mic) for over £1,300.
Didn't work there long enough to say if those last longer than 2 years :D

I can recommend Sirus Storm been using the one I bought for over a year now and haven't had any issues so far. Software is easy to use, earpads are unbelievable comfortable, amazing audio quality, decent mic and not that expensive. The only con I can think of is maybe the siza haha, they're freaking huge :D Moving into another room might be a problem though (depending on how large your room is), cable is 2.5m I think.
Had a logitech G35 before this one. Would not recommend though compared to the sirus storm. The G35 its cable is a **** and feeling is way less comfortable.

I've been very happy with my Turtle Beach Earforce Z2. Sound quality is far above what you would expect from its price, both for the headphones and the microphone. Also, it has a nice feature that seem to at least partially protect it from what at least in my experience is the most common cause for headsets breaking. Basically, if the cord gets caught in something, it has a natural "point of failure", which means that it will put less strain on other parts, and you can just re-connect the two pieces. I don't quite know how to explain it properly, so see the attached image.
Beware though that the headset does give you terrible headset hair.

How about getting the best possible headphones you can find for this budget so that you can not only get a good gaming experience but also exceptional quality when listening to music? For the mic you can always add an attachable one.
I would get either Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x or Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro-250. I own the DT990 and love it, and I don't think there's any gaming headset that can come close to its sound quality. With that said, I'm not sure how it would work with the PS4 as it needs proper amplification. If your PC has a board with good amplification the DT990 is amazing. There's also a 32 Ohm version which works well with any amplification (including all portable players and phones), but it's more expensive.
As for mic, the Zalman Zm-Mic1 is cheap and is supposed to work well, but you may want to consider more expensive options such as AntLion Audio ModMic and V-MODA BoomPro.

If you want an affordable (in the West) pair then you can't go wrong with Hyper X Cloud 2 from Kingston, they're made in partnership with a legit headphone company so the sound is surprisingly good for gaming headphones, especially for its price. You can also go with the first version if you don't care about surround, they're basically identical minus the 7.1 .
If you want wireless top notch gaming headphones then you gotta go with Steelseries H Series. There's nothing else out there with all its functionality and perks. Astros are overrated.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's quite odd, you're the first person I ever heard say they're uncomfortable, perhaps it takes a lil bit to mold to your head and you only used them very briefly. And I never get why people care how headphones for home use look, you don't even see yourself in them let alone other people (twitch viewers don't give a damn either, all they care is if you're pretty:P). They're widely regarded as the best affordable gaming headset so this is genuinely odd. As for the others, the functionality of the of the H Series is still better than Astros, it does too much that Astros don't. The fact that they come with 2 batteries that are easily chargeable in the dock and super easy to swap means you never run out of battery, the share plug is great, and they dodge alll interference by constantly changing frequency (which no other set does). But have it your way.
PS. Astros don't look great either, just saying :).

I played a couple of hours of league with the hyperx, just really didn't like them. I guess for their price they're pretty good, but personally I found them worse than my steelseries ones, and for about the same price.
I care what they look like. xD not how they look on me, just whether they're pretty next to my computer. owning ugly things makes me sad inside.
Honestly it's just personal preference, how some headphones work for some people isn't the same for everyone else, everyone's preferences/head shape/quirks are different. for instance, I normally have my volume super quiet (I'm on 4% system volume at the moment) so I might need different things to someone who listens to super loud death metal.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well death metal at any volume is just plain noise :P. I'm sorry I can't help you further, these are the best options, considering your issues you can't buy headphones before trying them first so you'll just have to figure something out. No recommendation is useful because there's no way of knowing if they'll feel comfy to you, you'll have to try a bunch out somehow.

Yeah, I've tried on a few of the top ones at various lan events and tournaments, so I've got a general idea, but it's hard to know without testing them for hours.
think I'm leaning towards ordering the a50s and returning them if they're not good.
Comment has been collapsed.
At that price range there's no way I'd go with anything other than H Series but suit yourself. And I've actually heard people say they prefer A40s over A50s so you should do some research, it would save you some decent money if the A50s aren't worth it.
Comment has been collapsed.
I have tried them and didn't like them. :P they also get worse reviews online. Plus they're $60 more expensive here than the a50s.
Yeah, opinion seems to be split between a40s and 50s, but since they're the same price now, I'd rather have the wireless headset even with the slight crackling issue some people have (it happens on all wireless headsets, including the h series).
Comment has been collapsed.
everything computer-related is cheaper in the states. :( New a40s were about £150, new a50s were £160. cheapest h series are £200.
pc magazine (at least the uk version) actually said they were good but the a50s were better. xD link

Remember that audiophile forum you were recommended? That reviewer would get crucified there for recommending Skullcandy in that review, he clearly is no expert in audio, more like clueless :). Techradar (with more capable tech reviewers for sure) prefer H Series.
If it helps we suffer from not being in the US too with prices, heck we don't even get Astros here. Although downright shockingly you can find H Series for 160 pounds here. You never find things cheaper here than abroad.
I should worn you though that A50s have garbage battery time, not even half of H Series (I know, I know, you don't like them, it's just an example), and they don't come with 2 interchangeable batteries, so you'll end up with no battery at the worst time a lot. And people seem to have A LOT of technical problems with the A50s so I'd be reluctant to get them. I'd still go with A40s because of that even at the same price (if the battery isn't awful). Choosing one will be difficult.
Still, it's a good problem to have, I wish I had this type of first world problems :)).

I'd get a Hyper X Cloud whichever version. It is quite expensive but one of the best headsets out there, premium quality. The mic is pretty good and it is removable so you can use it when you go out too. Who am I kidding Gamers never go out :D

The make is just for show when it comes to headphones imo,
you don't need to spend a wod of cash, just look for some that seem durable
make sure they are over ear or the sub bass will be lost,
anything that has a "frequency response of 20hz" produces around "100 db" is fine,
if you want them to last a bit longer i would suggest an audio extension cable,
and headphones that have a jack on them, that stops the pull you get when the cable gets caught
which is pretty much the common cause of them breaking.
(This might not be the best advice as i don't know a great deal about headphones but i have 3 years audio engineering experience).
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah the socket itself is just a 3.5mm jack, that + headphones = detachable headphones :D, its so much better am i right? just having your sound cut out a little bit rather then your head being pulled off, these would be good enough imo, if there durable enough, and they have pretty much the same spec as Dre.Beatz, your just not paying for Dre xD
would be better if they was over ear though

Well I used that site a couple of years ago, it's full of... elitists, but I got good advises too, I would give a try anyway :P
Comment has been collapsed.
First all think what you need: open headphones or closed headphones ---> closed headphones isolate you from the noise around you (and keep others from hearing your music/games)
Second: cable lenght (1,2m?)
Third: frequency response, impedance and sound pressure level

My sister's boyfriend gave me a pair of Playstation headphones (almost brand new, by the look of them). The only issue is that the microphone doesn't work because the plug is designed for Playstation systems, which apparently have headphones sockets with integrated mic support thingy.
Obviously, computers usually only have separate sockets for the sound and the microphone (usually next to each other), so the mic won't work unless I either get a wireless USB for the headphones (which my sister's boyfriend said he couldn't find), or a converter to combine the mic and headphone socket.
Fortunately, I don't use a mic anyways, so... \o/
Also, I realize that this comment won't help you one bit... Whatever, consider it a "story time", courtesy of Half Asleep Jbond™.

I honestly recommend, ((after doing a lot of searching with mics and headphone tests)), the setup that i bought for myself Logitech UE6000 (60E) and the V-Moda Boom Pro Mic (40E) much cheaper than anything by Astro and 100x better quality. Honestly this is what i recommend because the mic can plug directly in the headphones, without any DIY sticky plastic bits, and you still get the UE great quality sound from the headphones.

I'm looking for an all in one just for ease of moving it to console, or using it on other machines (if I go to an event or something, I'd rather use my own headset than the crappy plantronics normally available). I know I could get better quality for the price by going separate, but plug and play is more important to me.

I went from Syberia v2 to Razer Kraken, so can only talk about those two. Kraken only loose in one thing to Syberia and that is in comfort. Sound... Mic... Are so much better that in Kraken that you will feel in a new world^^

What I've been told is that you should buy separate headphones and microphone. That way if one breaks you haven't lost both/.

Well I'm using a Logitech G930 and I'm perfectly happy with it. I'd suggest you to get one too, I honestly see no downside of this headphone.

If you want good sound for cheap
superlux hd 681 headphones cost approx 20€
been using this combo for 2 years now great sound for musik and good location for enemies in fps. it is a small insider tip for gamers. lots of reviews for this setup. exceptional price/performance
30€ combo easily equals 80-90€ headsets. and is less prone to damage. also they are over-ear (i hate on-ear especially when you wear glasses)

I bought A40s a few years ago and they were alright, nothing special, although I did like the mixamp. Still got the headphones somewhere, but the mixamp broke sadly.
I've also had a razer headset, didn't like em at all. The only thing I like from razer is their mice tbh...
After the mixamp broke, I've switched to headphones+blu yeti over a headset. I've been using sennheiser and beats. I like the sennheiser but they're itchy so I use my beats.

What ever you do, just Say no to usb headphone/Headset. No no no NO!
Comment has been collapsed.
As general advice, do not use USB headsets.
Do not buy anything with a person's name on it e.g. rappers, singers, producers names.
And don't forget to look at reviews online first.
Oh, and avoid skullcandy.

So, my headset broke, and I want another one. I'd ordered some logitech g35s since I found them for sale for £52, but they ended up calling me a week later and saying they'd cancelled my order as they had none left in stock. >>
My grandma gave me some money since then, so I'm thinking of maybe buying a pair of Astros. Not sure if I should go for the a40 or 50 though, opinion seems to be split and price isn't too different. Has anyone had one/both of these and can give me advice?
General advice on other headphones wanted too. I was using a pair of siberia v2s, which were comfortable, though audio and mic quality wasn't great. I did think about getting a pair of normal headphones and a stationary mic, but honestly it's a lot of faff, and I move around a lot when I talk/play (including into the other room to play on the ps4) so would rather just keep an all in one.
