People complaining about mystery bundles are pretty short-sighted. These bundles are one of the few contributions of decent games on steamgifts.

I wouldn't call it short-sighted, users are not obligated to provide SG with decent games, it's not good for actual buyers who buy games, while people who don't buy games - most of SG - gain the most from it. Obviously you will see complaining from users who are interested in discussing bargains on spending their money.
Is it good for most SG users and SG itself? Yes. Is it bad - and a bad habit - for game buyers? Yes - by majority.
I feel encouraging the practice would be like laughing at others' misfortune. It's fine if the gamblers want to gamble but I would advise against it.

I'm inclined to agree. Unfortunatelly, people apparently keep buying that crap :/

Care to explain your views on this, then?
If you're implying that you have to be stupid to gamble, well, I see it as pretty rude. I mean... who hasn't bought a lottery ticket in their life? I know, some people never have. I do, from time to time. Heck, I'm even guilty of having bought one of the earlier mystery bundles. Yet, I'm no idiot. :p
People who try their luck with the Elite/Alpha/Beta/Whatever bundle hope for one of the shiny, unbundled titles... and end up disappointed most of the time. I'd say they are all aware that it's "rigged" to a certain extent.

Not really. The house always wins. There are no poor casino owners.

You're right. But sometimes, people might get lucky. (and didn't have to stay up all night) Not too often though, because that would be bad for business. ;)
That said, Fanatical is not a casino. I'm kinda concerned with the amount of mystery bundles we're getting fed with nowadays. We've had 3 or 4 back to back. Prices have increased to the point it's simply ridiculous, yet the pool of games seems to remain the same. Some people will try once or twice... some cannot resist those. This looks to be a very profitable way for Fanatical to get rid of their leftovers but at the end of the day, this could potentially leads to the beginning of an addiction. Or feed a disease that's already there. And I think that's kinda sad.

Spot on. I mean it more as a character flaw when it becomes an addiction. Obviously I didn't clarify that with a blank statement. Also in this case of a mystery bundle thats just a Hamilton depending on the person and their financial standing this could be akin to buying that one off lottery ticket. Just for fun :)

Going a bit off-topic here... I don't know if it's just me being ultra cynical, but without any proof, I find it hard to believe that "An American gamer has bagged themselves a pack of AAA games worth $400". In this day and age where people post anything and everything on social media, you'd think it would be relatively easy to track down that lucky person. I mean... if I were that gamer, I would have certainly bragged about it on Twitter. I've googled around... didn't find anything at all.
And that makes me wonder if Fanatical are feeding us with bullshit just to trigger that "omg, that could be me" feeling in people, which could in turn increase their desire to try their... err... luck. Because as icaio pointed out below, people might want to get lucky.

But sometimes, people might want to get lucky
kinda fixed for you, cause we're still talking about "fanatical" in a giveaway site and God only knows if i'll win Skyrim.
like, if
Gambling is for idiots period
then also "Gaming is for idiots period". "CV is for idiots and another period". also "Beer is for idiots -last- period".
or even "i'm an idiot" <-- not true
lol

True but if you allocate it as a 'travelling expense' and a one off experience every so often if you say with mates to Vegas and what not. Cost of doing pleasure I suppose. It's the pernicious addictive quality of gambling as a vice that truly is sad to see when it takes over people's lives.

Yeah, it comes down to the number one rule, never gamble what you can't afford to lose - unfortunately a rule millions of addicts can never hope to follow.
I don't imagine anyone is losing their life savings on loot boxes, but virtually everyone who participates is paying way more than they should for games they don't really want due to the same fundamental instinct, that adrenaline spike of "Hey! I can win!", invariably founded on a statistically meaningless probability.
In the case of games, though it's less harmful because there isn't the same drive to win as with a cash prize, in some ways it's more pernicious, because there is zero transparency. If I play the Euromillions, I know the exact likelihood of all the prizes. If I buy one of these bundles, I am completely blind as to the chance of winning one of the premium prizes, or likewise the chance of winning a game that was previously in a 1st tier bundle or even a mass giveaway.

[Revolt] Someone please start a petition against these disgusting lootboxes.
So much this. Seriously though, can we stop advertising these lootboxes on SG? I guess it's sort of ok-ish if they do it once a year as a special deal, but this is getting ridiculous.
Also, I think they wiped their collective ass with the survey's results, I have this feeling that there were more than a few people who complained about the so called "mystery deals".

Didn't expect someone to actually support mystery boxes here ;D
I'd rather have people know how useless these mystery keys are, especially for their price. Nothing helps them secure sales than a pipe dream to get the newest AAA release for a fraction of the cost.
These threads expose how weak these gamelists always are.

I think the worst part here is that it's the same bloody thing.
They have two variants of Mystery Bundles: The cheap one with keys that are 1.09€ or so with most games being quite worthless and then the "premium" ones, where they have semi-decent smaller games with a price of around 5€ per key.
This is the second variant being pushed for the third time.
The first time they made a "premium" mystery deal, I bought like 2-3 keys and I wasn't disappointed really. It came down to a relatively average purchase. But now I have the games I wanted from this bunch, so why would I want them again?
They're betting on the fact that most users won't look at threads like this, threads where these bundles get exposed for what they are. They're not scams inherently. The games here are decent and with the exception of a couple, they're priced relatively fairly. What I have a problem with are these two things: First that they aren't showing what games they have in the bundle and second that they're rebranding the same deal over and over again. It's disingenuous.
