sigh Tried 120 different combinations of what I consider to be the characters most likely to be correct (unsuccessfully). Either I'm missing something obvious, or the answer is much more complex than I had originally assumed.

That's the problem with most puzzles that people make. They're not so much puzzles as they are tests of patience due to not giving enough indicators/hints. \:3/
It's like when someone makes a cryptic ItsTooHard quiz but then misspells their own answers, heh.
After the most obvious solutions are tried, people are forced to go to extremes to find the 'correct' answer, which often leads them really far astray.
