Because I'm tired of getting catcalled and watching others in the street receive the same treatment, I decided to share some information with everyone in SG hoping that they can stop doing it and/or talk to their friends to make them reconsider their behavior.

Street harassment is unwanted and unwelcomed public attention, most often directed at women, which is demeaning and damaging. It’s not a private matter but one that should concern everyone.
If you have trouble empathising with strangers, then think about your mother, sister, or girlfriend. Would you enjoy watching people catcalling and telling them nasty things? How do you think they would feel about it?

On an average day I go out twice and I get at least one guaranteed catcall. On weekends or when I go out, for example to a club, it gets worse because groups of people feel more empowered to do so.

A few months ago I was walking with a friend and one guy said things and started to follow us. After a while it ended with me turning around and pepper-spraying his face, then running away in case he could fight back. This is the kind of violence it generates.
We had a rough rest of the day and were shaken up. I didn't enjoy doing that at all, but he had to be stopped. I also like to think the guy didn't enjoy it either.
So in the end, what did he achieve? Nothing.

Edit
OK, I'm gonna clear this up since some people like to assume things just to blame me for defending myself.

A few months ago I was walking with a friend and one guy said things...

For the backward people, this was in june when I wasn't wearing "provocative shorts and t-shirts" clothes. These are the "nice compliments" I got amongst others i don't even want to repeat here and/or I want to forget:

hey girl nice butt
does your friend wanna F with me too?
hey reply bitch
come here lesbos!
GONNA EAT YOUR ASS

...and started to follow us.

Walked one block with that guy which was 1 meter away from us. He wasn't shouting from the other side of the street, he wasn't half a block away, he wasn't sitting in the sidewalk. He was right behind us.

...After a while it ended with me turning around and pepper-spraying his face, then running away in case he could fight back...

He got warned to leave us alone during the whole 1-block fast-paced walk. I didn't stop to "discuss" because I'm not a 1.9 meters 120kg guy, so I'm not putting my friend and I at risk at 8:30pm in the street.

You read the "You're not alone" thread?
Well, most of the stuff that I shared about me is linked directly to an experience related to this, but I wasn't walking with a friend and there were two guys instead of one following me. You can guess what happened next since I wasn't able to defend myself.

But of course, street harassment is harmless and nothing else can go wrong, nor it can trigger unhappy memories from past experiences.
Think a bit before judging others so quickly assuming they overreact when they feel in danger.~

I know I probably won't convince anyone catcalling to stop by posting this (it doesn't hurt to try), but if your friends or co-workers do it, you can persuade or talk to them and see if they get it. There's nothing worse than being in a group of friends and allowing them to act like idiots.

It's disgusting and demeaning, stop it. You're hurting people with your actions and makes you look like a fool.

❤️️ FAQ, in case you're gonna post one of these comments I get all the time.

- But some women like to be catcalled!
Yes, there's also men that like to get hit in the face with a hammer. So using the same logic, I should go out and hit all men with a hammer in hopes they enjoy it?

- Don't be so sensitive, ignore it.
No, it reaches a point it can't be ignored. It's not an isolated issue once per month or in certain situations so you can avoid it. It also affects me a lot depending on my mood, so when you feel like crap and you get catcalled, things get worse.

- So you want others to come to your rescue when some stranger catcalls you? That will end up with me getting in a fight!
I'm not asking people to fight for me, just them to stop doing it, spread the word, and discourage people in their group of friends from being disrespectful.

- If you don't want to get catcalled, dress appropriately!
1: Don't blame the victim.
2: I dress as I please. It's my body, not someone else's.
3: It doesn't matter if it's winter and I'm wearing a jacket, or summer with shorts and a t-shirt. Some people will be idiots anyway and say things.

- I bet you like it when a handsome guy catcalls you!
Irrelevant. I expect respect from everyone.

- What about men? They also get harassed!
I'm very aware guys also get harassed by both men and women, but this thread is about girls. Feel free to create another thread for that issue, and I will support it.

- So this is just a misandrist rant!
It's not. If you feel targeted by anything I said, then it's not because you're a man, it's because you actions ressemble what it's said here.

- Meh, it could be worse.
It could be worse, but it SHOULD be better. Also, normalizing this behavior makes it even more painful for victims.

- Women also catcall!
I never said they don't, but for each woman that catcalls me, i get 500 guys. So the issue at hand is the one I shared.

- This thread offends me!
That tells a lot about you. Log off, take your time, and think about it.

- This thread is inappropriate for SG, please close and delete it!
Go tell that to all other threads about awareness, politics, religion, sports, disasters, etc.

Skimmed through the thread and it's almost sickening how some people are so quick to trivialise, belittle and/or deny a serious and insidious issue that is affecting the lives of women (and men), and one that is indicative of the broken fabric of our current culture and dialogue. It's astounding how some fragile little egos cry "feminism" as if it were some kind of slur, throwing around grand terms they don't understand like "free speech" as a cover for their pitiful and pathetic attitudes while offering thinly veiled (if that) bigoted, hate-filled, numbskulled tirades. The lack of empathy and common decency so blatantly and willfully displayed by these sad individuals (like some kind of live Dunning-Kruger effect demonstration) is nothing short of mind-blowing. (And btw, the "parody" threads made in response to this aren't funny or clever in the least.) It makes me wonder if some of these people have never once experienced love in their lives--to love a fellow human being and to be loved--and then I kind of feel sorry for them. Almost.

But luckily they aren't the majority. Far from it, and that gives one hope. I applaud you on your well put together, comprehensive and considerate thread and I hope you don't let the clowns and idiots put you down. Have a bump.

I got myself thinking about this thread when I first read it on Friday and talked to my girlfriend about it over the weekend.

We got to some conclusions, namely, it's hard to draw the line with this issue. On one hand, vulgar shouting or being very intrusive when talking to women is a horrible thing and can be pretty scary. It doesn't really happen that much here (the Netherlands) nor in our home country (Poland), with sporadic exceptions of construction workers and drunk groups of teenagers. It is quite a problem though in Spain or Italy (maybe other southern European countries too, but we haven't been there) and should be battled there.

On the other hand, we're slowly drifting into the future where any real life contact between men and women is 'bad'. We've already moved most of our dating/sex life into the virtual world and it's a bit saddening that the art of just talking to girls on random opportunities is dying out. I kind of miss 'the old times', where you could just meet someone of the other gender on the street and just ask them out on a date, like in the old movies. I hope it won't ever come to people not talking to one another out of fear of being labelled as a 'creep' or accused of 'harassing'. In the end, people who could have a meaningful conversation with someone won't risk it and those who have no personal culture will continue being assholes anyway. Obviously, what I mean here is actually coming up to someone and striking a conversation. Calling names or generally shouting at a woman passing by is, in my opinion, just a sign of lack of culture and bad upbringing.

The other day I was reading on the train and a man said "Hi love." And I said hello back and we talked about the book I was reading. Not all men are out to harass I think some women just don't want to socialise

Permalink

And I think that's cool. It should be socially acceptable to talk to each other, but also to refuse to do so if one doesn't feel like it, without any negative consequences.

i bet people also complained when phones were raising in popularity. ^^
it's just how the world works, anything that makes it easier for people to connect is welcomed. if things work out for people in a virtual environment, they can meet in real life.

and btw, people can actually talk to me. i'm not antisocial but i don't like random pick up lines or conversation in public by strangers. something that people here seems to not get or maybe it's just me not being crystal clear about it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I'm not saying that it's completely wrong, I'd probably use those apps myself if I were looking for someone at present. I just wouldn't like to see at some point a direct conversation to become something weird and creepy and the virtual approach - the natural way.

Yeah, cheesy pickup lines are something that I like to read and laugh about on the internet, however, I pity the fools that actually try to use them, because they rarely get anyone anywhere. Then again, one could blame the dating apps for increased use of those as it's easier to just copy paste the same crappy message a hundred times hoping that someone will take the bait instead of actually trying to talk to a person :P

It's a complex topic but I hadn't previously posted as your FAQ didn't leave a lot of room to manoeuvre. But broadly speaking, as someone with a lot of sisters and now young nieces, I strongly feel there are a lot of people in need of pepper spraying if basic decency is beyond them. I'm sure that these people must at least have mothers and why certain concepts regarding respect are lost on them is frankly baffling.

And I'm reluctant to criticise satire as I'm such a fan myself but at least some of what followed this felt in poor taste to me personally. But on the other hand I'm not really sure what else you expected. In conclusion I don't really know but it would be nice if at least somebody seriously considers some of the issues that have been raised that they might not have thought much about before.

I have done political cartooning in the past. I have satirised things up to and including war, terrorism and ethnic cleansing. The artists that I most respect have done these things to draw attention to injustice and promote social change in the past and it is a tradition that I feel it is important to be maintained.

To parody serious issues over a grudge or disagreement on a random internet gaming related website is something I find less admirable. Some of it has been funny but I'm not going to pretend that I haven't laughed at plenty of things I shouldn't have or that the world would have been better off without.

That doesn't sound like a lot, to be honest. But I'd agree that 30 a month is 30 too many.

By the way, what do you consider "catcalls"? does someone approaching and hitting on you/giving you a compliment count, or is it just the whistling/yelling stuff?
I've seen people that take it to the extreme where any attention from the opposite sex is considered catcalling.

Sorry that you have to be annoyed every day by people with a lack of impulse control.

i explained it a few times in this thread, but it's basically not what they say that is a problem for me unless they are just rude, it's what comes after i reply to them or if i acknowledge they are speaking to me. almost every single "hi" or harmless variant of a greeting i got, turned out to be some kind of invitation to go out, or something more.
so i've been ignoring them for years now, which in turn sometimes generate insults because they feel offended i don't reply.

if i had to deal with this once every week or so i think i wouldn't be so worried or annoyed, but it's a daily experience.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sorry I asked then.

It's understandable in your part. No adult should act like a child.

some kind of invitation to go out

I would call those unwanted attention/advances rather than catcalls, those are a different thing in my mind.
I probably wouldn't be annoyed by an exchange like that if it was done cordially and stopped once one's disinterest is made clear.
I haven't lived it, but I would think that if people approached me nicely, I'd not have a problem with it, can't blame people for being interested.
The assholes on the other end, completely unacceptable. Yelling, touching, insulting, etc. because someone rejected or ignored you is horrible behaviour.

I just wanted to make an insensitive joke about old people and their hearing capability, but then I decided to leave it at that, hehe. ;D That's what I meant by the second half of my statement - not in a way like you should get over it or ignore it and hope they will go away just by wishful thinking, but to be aware of the fact that sometimes one can tend to give them way too much leverage, more than they deserve - and there's a lot better things one could do in the meantime.

My dad thinks it's okay to say stuff to female strangers. It's "innocuous" stuff, and he obviously isn't completely repugnant, and isn't going to get hostile or lash out if she isn't into it, but he doesn't understand that saying nothing in the first place is the best way to do things.

Even "you look nice tonight," or "hello," or "smile," is presumptuous. I always thought it was kinda wrong to accost women you don't know as if they should be receptive to what you say because you think it's a compliment, even before I saw evidence of how nasty and hostile some guys are, and how threatened women may feel.

Even when I was a wee lad I thought it was weird that guys would try to pick up girls like that. I get why some teen girls are receptive to being picked up that way but I always secretly though to myself in some vague fashion that a mature woman with a modicum of self-esteem has the experience, confidence, and wisdom enough to avoid the sort of man who thinks presumptuous or crude remarks to a stranger on the street are witty or endearing.

Related:

I remember some years ago my distant cousin was visiting and we went to the movies with my uncle and I was sitting on the outside of my group and so three people sat next to me--two of them clearly a couple and the second girl just their friend sat right next to me. My cousin leans over and whispers to me that I should ask her to blow me in the bathroom. I shake my head and decline. A few minutes later, even though I was like 85% sure he was serious, I asked him if he was serious, and he made clear that he was deadly serious. I don't remember how much I tried to explain to him how ridiculously offensive the suggestion was, and I wouldn't have put it into academic women's studies type terms. I wasn't yet really aware of the extent of the harassment women face or even my own obliviousness regarding my own failings and presumptions as a member of the majority group. But I did know that I never was and never would be the kind of guy to ask a random woman sitting next to me at a movie theater for fellatio as if because there is a non-zero chance that the gambit would be successful that it is okay. There's a greater chance it would ruin her day. Even in my relative ignorance regarding the breadth and depth of sexism I knew that it was the kind of thing only a real fucking asshole would do. Unfortunately my cousin did not and I am not particularly optimistic that he has matured greatly. I don't know what he's up to now but if I heard he were married I would fully expect him to try to hook up with someone if he visited because he absolutely strikes me as the sort of guy to cheat on his wife as much as he can get away with. (P.S. His dad is a minister who used to preside over three-hour Sunday services, for whatever that's worth.)
