Yes or no to nomination events?
I like nomination events, because every time I have done one, there were a couple of suggestions for people I never noticed but that had contributed in a very nice way (GA wise; a thread/event I missed; an user script). That's sufficient for me, but I see your point that the majority of invited users are from a small group.

I don't mind them. I know I won't be nominated because I don't really participate in the community much and that's the point of them... to reward those who participated in the community. I compare it to an awards nomination. If you didn't do things to fall under that awards category then you won't be nominated. Doesn't mean you're not liked or not viewed as a good person.
ie. Part time actors shouldn't feel slighted when they don't get nominated for an emmy but the A-list actors do.

But for example if it's about movies, it's about new movies and new nominations every year.
Like here it's mostly because someone made a script even two years ago, or like in my example someone with a very bad ratio which i also otherwise didn't really noticed on the forum, or some people getting nominated for having done puzzles (while they gave alike 30 games total. while plenty of others who done much more in that area).
It's not so much about not being liked. more about how certain nominations get defined, some even get nominated because they know that person in real life.

what i said there both worked and backfired entirely though.. i said that with hopes it would make people think outside the box, and actually come up with some unknown people to most, or at least semi-active on the forum but not the normal "popular nominees". which it worked quite well for that.. but it backfired and caused drama too which was not my intent, and somehow managed to get me on that list even though i tried giving reasons why i should be excluded :S lol.. so now i'm at a total loss of what to say to keep everyone happy and away from the blacklist buttons. =)
i guess back to the turtle shell to stay safe ^^

damn it man, don't remind me about highschool... you just reminded me about an experience when we had a sort of prom for the 1st yrs (I was one of them) and the graduating yr girls were organizing it, so they decided to make a Miss and Mr (or King and Queen of the prom type of event) event, so they did some initial tryouts involving some quick challenges in front of an audience (before the actual big event), and there were a few guys, they did not get much of a response from the audience, but as soon as I walked out there, people were cheering for me, despite not really being anything special or anything, but the crowd seemed to like me...well, those elitists graduating girls decided to not pick me...said I was attractively unfitting to the task of being a participant. But hey, this is just one of those many high school stories... sorry for moping here, I got offtopic, but yeah, as others said, everyone is free what they feel/want to be doing around here as long as they don't break the rules.

Since when life is fair to start being fair now? Also, I saw that you got nominated into Delta's birthday party, so what's the problem? Also, that's how someone gets recognized? Because of his ratio? Not because of his personality? ._.

Does me have being nominated twice there diminish any of the reasoning i made in the op?
I can also say i am not nominated in the deal or no deal one (a quiz i enjoy on tv) but i don't care if i were nominated or not, would have thrown in this topic anyway.
That school example did happen to me and i can fully understand certain people might just feel left out.
It should be about the whole total package, if someone has a bad ratio, but does good things in other areas, bravo.
Personally to me if someone goes with a 600 win against a 100 send then yeah i don't care how nice that person is, then you are taking the piss out of things. Same goes for someone with a very positive ratio but acting like a jackass.
Also some talk about something a certain person did maybe up till about 2-4 years ago, or people knowing eachother in real life, in theory it's usually the same list.

Look, we know that every time, they always pick the same people, so it doesn't matter. But caring about the ratio, instead of the personality of someone, is just plain wrong. Maybe they nominated someone because he's a very good person. You only saw his ratio and you started judging him negatively already, while you don't even know him. xD If you want to get to the deal or no deal game, if they choose me (which is highly unlikely), just tell them to take my place. I don't care about games anyway. You happy now? :P

It does matter as that it can change, else someone can just make a Most popular on SG Group, invite everyone from that same people list and do group giveaways with eachother.
I disagree with you as in whenever someone has 300 wins and 0-20 sends, everyone would call him/her a leech, get blacklists, however when someone has 600 wins, but 100ish sends, then somehow for some it's "okay" because they given some.
That's double standards. Note i never even seen that person here on the forum which also says enough for me.
You know well that i am on here alot myself.
Even if i were to get nominated myself i'd refrain myself from that event, would make me a hypocrit if i joined.
I am still happy though. :)

Not really. I know some of these so called "leechers" that are polite and I like them. I really like polite people. ^_^ But if I would nominate them, people would eat me alive, as always. >:( About this idea of a "Most Popular on SG" group, already multiple of them exist. Some people just make whitelist and group giveaways and give gifts to each other - a year may have passed since their last public giveaway, nobody actually knows them, but they're somehow famous because they just exchange gifts with their groups of 5-10 friends. :P By the way, revilheart just made The 1st Annual SteamGifts Awards, if you're interested about that. xD

600 wins and 100 sends (or similar ratios) is not a leech between quotes, it's being a leech.
As i said it shouldn't be about ratio or 1 script someone made years ago, someone that knows someone, or a good ratio but bad attitude, should be about total packages, and that's often neglected.
That's just my opinion, you have yours, totally fine. i don't even disagree some of those leechers might be very nice people.
Maybe that's why you don't always like me as sometimes i am not always "polite" :P
Have no idea what topic is about yet, will go start reading it now.

I only like good and polite people - they are the ones that should be chosen, in my opinion. :/

Still, does people's ratio matter when nominating? I think NOT! ;P

Just because someone you think is undeserving is nominated doesn't mean they actually are chosen by the creator to be part of the event, and if they are, that's the creator's prerogative, as always and as it should be. I don't worry about all the invites I don't get but rather am just thankful for those that I do get, so thanks!

I always just skip anything that smells like a nomination event so I don't know how they actually work. I would assume there's always those same 'popular' people involved (or a group of friends nominating each other/participating), but I kinda see the neat idea behind it like Oppenh4imer said: finding about people who have done something nice etc.
All in all, since I'm not popular/known enough on SG, don't really care about them in any way (reading/following/nominating/etc. or even having an opinion if they are cool or not). Yes, I guess you could say I'm that dork who stays at home on a Friday night doing next week's homework.

I feel like the people that don't like them because its a "popularity" contest just waste a comment complaining rather than using it to nominate someone that isn't "popular" and "deserves" to be noticed.
Like I'm pretty sure people like Delta who do things like that literally pick all names and put them into a hat. +1s don't count. Wallister will probably do the same. So really... Its luck of the draw not who is loved the most :)
Comment has been collapsed.
I mean nomination events are pretty fair. Take Wallisters event. Out of 1 million users he needs 15... How else can you pick people?
He could totally just pick favourites and it would be easy. Thats just boring though. He wanted to do something fun for the community. Yet people just shit on it :/
Comment has been collapsed.
I think for most, It's not so much about disliking such events, it's how some people are chosen. If someone who starts such an event can already begin by saying please let's not try picking the same people each time, and give someone else a chance, or sharper criteria, then Wallister would still get's a decent list in which he could get 15 from.
How is it fair that some are nominated basically because they know that other person in real life, and such similar reasons?
And there are already 3 nominations thingies in like 1 week? Yes Revil's is different, but still about nominations.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'll just step in here and say, tough, basically.
Aside from the fact that there is no easier way to hold such events, the amount of effort that goes into such things are there for all to see, so pushing against a wave of negativity is annoying.
At the end of the day, its whoever is giving the game away decision. People have started getting at peoples choices, lets not forget, when push comes to shove, they are being generous. They are GIVING things away, no one is entitled to enter anyones giveaway.
As I've said a few times to things like this, instead of being angry about it, try nominating someone who isn't usually nominated.
DISCLAIMER: as to the nature of the topic, this is very hard to discuss without coming across as angry. I want to clarify, this is not an angry tone, I'd rather open debate and discussion.

To be fair, i have no idea who you guys are, either.

On the one hand it does feel like the "popular kids" are all just patting themselves on the back, but those same people also do serve an important role setting an example and tone for the rest of the community. While I think in our hearts we already know who will win each award, they get it because they earned it by creating what we recognize as the steamgifts culture. Whether or not you care if they get an award they still earned the attention.

I'm always not gonna be someone anyone picks for this stuff but at the same time who cares for me it's nothing like being picked in gym because you are free to leave or avoid the thing all together. You are letting this bug you just ignore it man.
Comment has been collapsed.
Eh. I do feel kinda jealous of the people who are popular enough to get picked, but I certainly don't blame anyone for not picking me. I don't participate in the forums enough to be noteworthy, especially lately. Those kind of events aren't very common anyway, so you're not missing much.
Comment has been collapsed.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Jigidi got so common because it's easy to use. Nomination events require frequent attention from the person who sets them up, and not many are willing to put forth that effort.
Plus, nomination events are far less common now than when I joined a little over a year ago (or at least, that's what it seems like). A trend's a trend, and I doubt they'll come back aside from occasional spikes.
And thanks for the WL <3

As someone having a party, I like them. I can't know everyone, and getting a good selection of choices and having a RNG to pick some will be fun.
Yes, I remember the days of school sports. I was picked after girls in the class. I was terrible. Doesn't influence my feelings on this. Just makes me hate sports and makes me flash back to terrible mistakes I made.

No, but that I was so useless that girls were decided to be stronger and faster than me. Which admittedly was true.
I hated PE so much.

I'm on of those people that can't possible consider gaming as a sport. I'm old, and that comes with certain expectations of a sport. Lots of activity, something I'll suck at and sooner or later, someone will be yelling at the ref.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yep, usually just popularity contests filled with the same people over and over.
Lately I've been trying to pick some "lesser-chosen" people for those events, if I even bother at all.
Oh, and there are just wayyyy too many whitelist-farming threads lately. Sighery's anti-shitposting script is great for those threads, though.

Does it feel for anyone else like being "picked" (aka not picked) last in gym class all over again?
Don't get me wrong, lots of people deserve it, i don't even care if i am not nominated, i'll just pass the event.
However what strikes me is when i see certain people get nominated that i barely seen on the forum, some even with ratios to be deeply ashamed of (600+ wins against 100+ sends), or someone that made a script 4 years ago or someone knows someone IRL, so usually it tends to be the same lists over and over.
Personally i think it shouldn't be just about ratio, or just 1 nice thing someone did, but a more total package (as in a good ratio but also a nice person or done some nice scripts, howevere you mix it).
