Kestrel is most balanced ship for me. It's the only ship I managed to finish game on hard. Best strategy: get lasers with 2-3 projectiles, max shield an you are golden. Also remember to fire them at once, because then you have burst that can penetrate every shield.
Comment has been collapsed.
That is pretty much how I've had my best success (though I do like to have a missile weapon too, and have that attack enemy shield rooms) Also, due to the randomness of the game I usually find on runs where I get my shields up, everyone has missiles and I have no drones! Vice versa, I have a good run with drones and everyone has more and more powerful lasers!

Try to counter enemy missiles with Cloak. Most of the time it's actually my only defense against them and I do fine. I find it more reliably available than drones and at very similar price. Hint: it's at the full efficiency from the start, you don't even need to upgrade it further. Without upgrades you can actually use it more frequently and it only eats up half the energy that even Mk1 Defense Drone does. I only upgrade the engines later by two bars or so, so that when the engine guy and pilot grind to full mastery I have 100% evasion with Cloak up (+60%). Seriously, Cloaking is you friend. If you wait for the enemy to fire what they got and then switch it on, all the projectiles will most likely pass by harmlessly. And you've got 5/10/15 seconds of your guns warming up in advance of the now cold enemy.
My first upgrades ever are always Door Subsystem, at least to the second level (to reliably suffocate unauthorized personnel) and shields to the second layer. Then it's mostly gunnery and reactor upgrades plus teleporter to tier two, as to facilitate capturing ships relatively whole and get some useful Event outcomes.
I don't like the Kestrel in basic layout. It's chaotic, and the crew is terrible. Somehow easy to defend against boarding, but still crap. Three humans, really? Kestrel in the layout B is very good however. Also the Engi ship is surprisingly good. Great starting crew; ideal for taking ships whole from the very first sector and has provision for many drones. Keeping more than two good guns powered is too expensive anyway. I never had any problem with the Rebel Flagship yet, beaten it every time I got to it. My ships mostly fall apart somewhere on the way ;p

When did this game get a hard difficulty?
Strategy really depends on the stuff I find and the ship I use, there is no golden rule as so much is based on randomness. But yeah, against strong shields using laser weapons concentrated fire is a must. Killing every crew member against the rebel flag ship is one of the worst things you can do cause it gets automated systems and then everything gets automatically repaired there so you can't take out their weapons anymore for good. Try to fly to as many beacons as possible to get as much loot as possible (Nebulas give you more time so you can fly to more beacons, ofc there are situations you gotta run fast...). Boarding an enemy ship can be an excellent tactic with the right crew members and weapon systems. Bombs are awesome to destroy enemy systems as defense drones cannot shoot them down. If you use defense drones IMO it's better to use a mark 1 and mark 2 combined. Don't underestimate the value of a good dodge rate and blast doors. If you board the enemy ship and it has a med bay its better to destroy the medbay first and then teleport into their medbay(works perfect with a firebomb and rock crew members). With beam weapons try to hit as many rooms as possible. It doesnt make a difference if the laser hits the room for a whole second or just 0.1 seconds, just touching it it enough. Containing enemy boarding drones can be better than destroy them,as destroying them usually leads to another drone with another hull damage. When fighting the rebel ship go for Ion cannon and rocket launcher first (bombs are again useful here as in second stage the defense drones shoot down your rockets. Firebombs however leave the systems non repairable so even if the ship gets auto system it wont be able to fire anymore (at least not with the weapon systems). In second stage you might want to go for the drone system first...this depends a bit on your defensive systems. With the Fed Cruiser it can be totally enough investing everything into defensive systems and just rely on the artillery beam. When having a crystal crew member use them to shield precious rooms in hard fights with their special ability.
hm thats pretty much I can think of atm. Managed to win the game on normal with Zoltan,Rock,Fed Cruiser,Engi and Slug ship (not with the Kestrel, lol).

I still haven't managed to complete the game with the Kestrel either! Managed it with the Rock, Federation and Engi ships though. Never use defensive drones. Always try and pick up some cheap burst lasers early on, and focus these on the enemy's most dangerous systems (weapons, drones etc) with an anti-ship drone buzzing around, randomly chipping away at the opposing ship.
Have sunk a good 30 hours into this game already. It's been spectacular value for the $4.99 I paid for it. Maybe it will be in a [Humble?] bundle soon, to open it up to a wider audience?

Defensive drones are great for preventing missile damage and those annoying little boarding drones from punching holes in everything. Combine that with 2-3 shields and a bit of dodge from engines and you're pretty much invincible. Even the MKI model is fairly capable of dealing with those dual missile launchers.

I spend as much time in each sector as I can to get stuff for upgrading my ship. For the boss fight, it's incredibly helpful to have the first level of cloaking so you can hide from its periodic super attacks. I also like to teleport crew into the boss's weapons to kill those off quicker.
Comment has been collapsed.
oh yeah I forgot the cloaking in my post. Best moment to activate the cloak is when he just fired a blast of rockets. Once you went clock everything that has been fired so far will miss. In the last stage best use it after a power surge blasted.

Upgrading your crew and your engine could raise your evasion upto 55% which is very essential when encounter the last boss.
There're at least 2 strategies, for example, using ion gun mk2 or boarding crew, but you MUST destroy the third gun battery of the boss ship immediately.

Tip 0: Get level 2 blast doors as your first upgrade.
Tip 1: There's no tip, since it's different for each ship.
Tip 2: Use the teleporter on the damn 3-missile launcher for the boss.
Tip 3: I don't know, I mostly go for the weapons. If you can reach there with a missile or bomb, you won half the battle.

'fraid not. If you want those you'll need to go to this thread and answer some cryptic, punny and probably damn annoying questions relating to Skyrim.
...If you do go there, you couldn't do me a favour and just bump the thread. Got about two days left on the giveaways, was hoping to ramp up the number of solvers. Getting embarrassed keep bumping it myself - like I'm after attention or something. I'm not, I just want as many nice people to have a chance as possible!

Get the teleporter and extra crew ASAP, and kill the enemy crew instead of their ship. Focus your weapons on disabling enemy guns and medical bay, then port into the med bay to prevent them from repairing it. Some weapons do bonus damage vs crew or start fires, which can be extremely helpful for this strategy.
It can be risky, but you receive tons of extra resources. Do this early and often, and you'll be swimming in resources before you know it. You can also attempt to suffocate enemy crew by locking down their oxygen system with an ion weapon (better suited for the Engi ship). Some early encounters feature ships with an isolated oxygen system, so once it's damaged just wait for them to suffocate and you'll get a nice bonus for very little effort.

As a note, remember to go to Pirate Sectors to get crew. Slavers are common and if you almost destroy their ship, they will agree to give you a slave for free. DO NOT BUY SLAVES FROM PIRATES.

Always travel through the Red (dangerous) sectors, more risk = more reward. Stay as long as you can in each sector. I never jump out until the rebel fleet is right on my ass. Also, things other people have already said like teleporter, max engines and burst lasers. Unlock the Kestrel type B if you can; it's pretty awesome.
Comment has been collapsed.
Always get second shield by the end of sector 1. Always get blast doors by sector 3. Engines are your defense against missiles and solar flares. A 50% evade can tank the super weapon of the flagship, mind you it is still FTL. Get the third shield by sector 5. You can get by with just a pilot and engineer, the other systems take a long time to train and crew tends to die.
Consider people to be the real power source of the teleporter; the more, the better. Always aim for level three teleporters. Always rotate your crew to get kills. 8 gold people will defeat any crew. Always upgrade med bays to level 2. Only blue option giant death spider events. Level 1 cloak is all you need to dodge missiles and save scrap. If you want a better chance to beat the game, time it so your node visits force you into one battle with rebels and warp away. Get like 100+ extra scrap that way for every sector. Maybe do that after the first sector.

I don't want the key, but I'm curious as to how these "ninja" things work. I see no key anywhere.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ok, I think I understand how this community uses the term "ninja". When the key is found, I would be interested in learning "the only way you can hide something on SG forums." Many of these puzzles are horrifically frustrating and I suspect it may have to do with something like this. I imagine other new community members have a similarly negative view of the seemingly impossible puzzles that are found around here.

Check the source code. If you can't see something, it's either some weirdly cryptic giveaway or there's something hidden in the source code. In this case, there is a steam redeemable key for Galactic Arms Race hidden in the source code of the original post.

But you're spending moneyz on drone parts until (if?) you get the drone arm aug. For a noobie, Red-Tail is great because it can pound through up to 3 shields without using any missiles or drones.

No matter the ship, I like to have a Rock + Mantis Bording team, at least 1 Engi for repairs and as many Zoltans for system energy as possible. As for the weapons, Breach bombs and Halberd beam are great. Breach for system destruction (2 on the shields) then the halberd.
For the last boss, I TP my team in the missile slot while I kill the shields, then destroy the other weapons with the beam. Call back the boarders and send them back to another weapon. Usually with that method I kill the ship after the 2nd weapon is down.
For the 2nd pass, I resend the boarders to missile slot, and kill the drone bay with the bombos. Then I alternate with drone and shield (sometimes med bay to stop the healing and from time to time kill the ennemy crew). Then finish the ship with the beam.
With this method, the last run is quite easy as there is just a little crew left, if any, on the flaagship. I just kill missile again while killing the shield and beam the pilot seat along the shields.
Very useful thing to have is a cloacking bay for those power surges the flagship has. It also stops his boarders to go back to his ship, so when you feel they will leave, activate it and finish them off.
On another not, I have over 30 hours of gameplay and found only 2 times the Rock homeworld, and still have no Rock cruiser. Only missing the Rock and Crsytal cruisers.

dont go for crystal ship if you havent the rock already. A) its a little bit easier with the rock ship B) getting the crystal ship is an achievement for the rock ship. Ofc if you do a playthrough and there actually is a chance to get the crystal ship go for it! Half of my ingame time I spent trying to unlock that crystal hip....either I dont get the crew members or I dont get the homeworlds and 2 times I had the crystal crew member and the rock homeworld, but the event didnt happen to me.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yup, I know of the relatioship between the Rock and Crystal ships. Getting the rock ships has been my goal from the moment I started the game, but the Crystal one is such a mess to get that it would take me a miracle.
Comment has been collapsed.
Of my first three playthroughs, I got the pod all three times and got the crystal crew two times.
I haven't gotten crystal crew since, but I've found the ancient device randomly in a rock sector! It feels like the ancient device is the hardest thing to find.

Definitely go to Red-Tail (Kestrel Type B). It comes with four crew and four basic lasers. It's one hell of a ship for new players.
If you start to get the hang of the game and you have the Zoltan cruiser, try to get Noether. Noether starts with no shields (but you get the zoltan shield), but you get 3 zoltan crew, 2 ion cannons and a pike beam. Ion the shields to do damage with the pike, and then ion the weapons to prevent damage to your ship while your pike finishes them off. I've only won twice and both times were with Noether. It's an incredibly underrated cruiser for basic ship-to-ship combat.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I think I managed to unlock Red Tail on my first full run (i.e. die to the flagship). I got lucky and did the crew achievement with a crystal crew member!
I was expecting it to be a lot more difficult to play FTL, but I picked it up quickly. I have every ship except the Mantis and Crystal ships and I've had the game for less than a week. Granted, I've been playing on Easy so far, so that might have something to do with it...
Comment has been collapsed.
That's pretty damn lucky for a first run. I've done many runs and only got the stasis pod twice, and only got the crystal guy once!
I'm enjoying it. Glad I got it. Has that characteristic roguelike replayability. Currently trying to finish the game and unlock ships and really having fun with it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Why not? Sometimes, I turn autofire off if I want to time a laser/beam to an ion/laser shot, but I'm not fast enough to manually target an upgraded ion that fires every four seconds.
It's important to understand that firing weapons as soon as they are charged (e.g. autofire) is a bad strategy for all weapons, but there are situations in which it's ok. If your enemy has no shields, you might as well let your beam rape him as often as possible.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've won about 2 - 3 times only.
I haven't tried cloak myself but it really doesn't seem that great...

Missiles ignore shields, so it's actually better to use missiles to take down shields and then use lasers to end the fight.
Comment has been collapsed.
Just had a really good run - died on the last boss but unlocked the Red-Tail, ended up tearing through things until sector 7 with the Burst Laser, Hull Beam and Pike Beam - was tearing up ships in one attack! :D Sadly that got a little more difficult once three-stage shields came into it, and I never found a store with another weapon! Got slain by the Rebel Flagship at the end, but that's my best run so far! (by only 1 point...but still, far more achievements!)

If you see a Pegasus anywhere in your run, buy it. It fires two projectiles per missile so you have a great chance of hitting your target with at least one.
Maybe I've been lucky, but I keep finding them and then using them to rape the flagship. A few hours ago, I used Noether to wipe the floor with a Pegasus, Burst Laser II (better than III!) and two Ion Blasts.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've had the Pegasus once before. Very nice weapon. I do like missiles (they're great for owning shields...I really want a good burst laser, beam and Pegasus combo for destructive fun) but it annoys me how quick missiles run out and how expensive it can be to replace them sometimes. Pegasus really helps alleviate that.

From what I know of the genre and what I've been told.
Step 1: Travel from sectors 1-7 destroying everything - Preferably with teleporters to maximise gains.
Step 2: Be lucky in sectors 1-7 hoping for good rewards and finding stores with the right items
Step 3: Get to sector 8
Step 4: Kick arse and hope
Step 5: ????
Step 6: Profit

You have to be FTL to where the flagship will be. It moves around the sector. You have to defeat it three times.
If you lose to the flagship (especially on the 2nd battle), don't feel bad. You need to get lucky and get the right weapons. I suggest using missiles to reliably damage the flagship and cloaking to dodge the special attacks. Check the wiki if you want to learn about the capabilities of the flagship. It's very challenging.

Little tip for anyone who doesn't know...Asteroid fields are really easily exploited if you have good shields (level 2-3, preferably 3) Can get some good pilots and shielders from all your crew if you just switch them around and wait. Helps in case you lose anyone.
Edit: Forgot to add, you have to get lucky with who you come up against, because you only gain experience while 'in combat' so have to have an enemy ship present. If they've got weapons that can breach your defences, destroy them and get the hell out of there!
Comment has been collapsed.
Okay. I hit that flagship for all it's worth and...Well, second time around there was some kind of zerg-rush of anti-ship drones! HOW DO I DEAL WITH THAT!? There must have been 6-8 of the damn things! Even with full piloting skill, and full shields they OWNED me! I teleported my guys in to deal with the problematic weapons, managed to get them to the drone control but they couldn't take it down in time...Do I just need better weapons (Was running 3x Basic laser and a beam; can't remember which...Tried to find some burst lasers but the damn stores from Sec.3-7 were selling drones!) or is there some strategy I'm missing?
Comment has been collapsed.
good defense systems, bombs (not rockets),a good boarding party,a strong cloak system...these things help. Depended on your ship either go first on the rocket launcher, then the drone system or the other way around (usually rockets first, but it depends on your layout). Its IMO the hardest phase. If you have improved blast doors dont bother about their boarding drone if it didnt hit an important room, dont destroy it right atm...it will just sent another one that might get a chance to hit an important system. Defense drones help here.
Comment has been collapsed.
I had a Defense Drone I but that was nowhere near good enough. Could have used 2 or a Defense Drone 2...Last time I defeated stage 1 of the Rebel Flagship but then it got away. This time was a COMPLETE SHOCK! Sadly didn't get a cloaking system, and I didn't even get teleport until sector 6 so didn't have much experience on my teleported crew. God damn roguelike-likes!
It's like getting past Mom on Binding of Isaac all over again!

A Defense mark 1 can shoot 1 incoming rocket. With 3 rockets incoming not useful at all. Mark 2 shoots lasers and rockets,so usually its too expensive to use,but sometimes can be very useful. 2 mark 1 drones are cheap and hold of most of missles and boarding drones. The flagship has 3 phases. The 3rd one imo is the easiest...at least if you have good shields ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
YAY! Finished it on easy mode and on a sub-par run too. No drones, skeleton crew (pilot, weapons and shields) so couldn't use the teleporter. Used two burst lasers and switched between breach missiles and a fortuitous glaive beam I picked up at the end of sector 6 (this thing is AWESOME!)
Stage 1 - Started off spamming the flagship's shields with burst lasers and missiles on the 3-missile weapon. Once the missiles were taken out I kept spamming the shields/cloak with burst lasers and glaive beamed the hell out of it.
Stage 2 - Same start, got lucky on the breach missile to the 3-missile weapon as it set the room on fire and killed the crew member. Then just glaive beamed around the drone control before too much damage was done.
Stage 3 - More of the same...Took out the shields, breached the 3-missile weapon and then switched to glaive beam and just maximised the amount of damage with it by ensuring I used it when shields were down...Thing went down in no time!
So happy because I was not in a good position, had a decent crew and then they all started thinning out between sectors 5 and 7. Getting that glaive beam saved the playthrough! Even got the 'Astronomically Low Odds' achievement at the start of the flagship battle...Had to do stages 2 and 3 with only about half hull! Seriously, FTL is punishing in its difficulty, with even easy being near impossible, but it's so much fun! Can't recommend it enough!
Comment has been collapsed.
It's stunning. Only a short beam length but at 3 damage per hit if you maximise its spread and time it with using lasers or missiles to disable shields it takes down almost everything in one pass! It's got a very high cooldown, but makes up for it in sheer brute power!
Comment has been collapsed.
Okay, so the Red-Tail is great and everything, but not if you don't get good weapon upgrades by about sector 5 or 6. Then it starts to get difficult to get past shields and do sufficient damage to disable systems...What's more I've tried and tried and tried to use teleporters to take out enemy ships but my crew ALWAYS end up dead. Should I just use the old Russian tactic of keep throwing men at them until they die or is there some way I can weaken them first?
Comment has been collapsed.
with teleports you have a few options:
Healing bomb. Blast it in the room where your guys fight to insta heal them. Like every bomb you can use them on your own ships (little hint: You can bomb your own ship to get an anchievement that you did not dodge 5 attacks in a row with fully upgraded and powered engines)
Upgraded teleporters and then swarm the enemy
Before you guys are dead port them back and heal them up again. Many enemy ships dont have a medbay. If they have one you should destry that early on anyway. This method takes time.
Use rock and mantis for boarding ship. I prefer the rock since my rock usually beat mantis in a fight because of the higher health and you can set rooms on fire and use your rock there. Never use Engi or Zoltan. Humans and slug are ok,but wont have a chance against rock or mantis.
since your teleporter is always 2 slots only teleport into 2 slot rooms to avoid getting swarmed. If the enemy does´not have blast doors running away if your teleporter isnt ready to port your guys back is an option (especially with mantis)
Upgraded sensors or slug crew members help you check if boarding is a good idea at all
Never ever never ever neeeever ever ever never ever teleport to auto drones...yeah..those auto drones are my biggest problem with rock/slug ship once they have shields of 3
Comment has been collapsed.
Just did a run using tip 3 - If they started getting hurt before my teleporter was back up I just ran them around the ship like madmen until I could! Went surprisingly well until I couldn't get them out of one ship, low on hull and on fire...Boom goes the dynamite and there goes my boarding crew!!! Still, good advice again...
Whatever happens, that teleporter is a good investment for the flagship alone. If you have that and two spare crew members, get yourself in that 3-burst rocket ASAP and you can focus your firepower on taking out shields and doing damage to other systems/weapons. Really good investment for 75 scrap.
I also appreciate the dodging more now than I did. While a defense drone is great for shooting out rockets, it's expensive...even if you find a drone it's 80 scrap for the drone control in the Kestrel. Far better to upgrade your engines and give yourself a good dodge chance that stands for all weapons than have to worry about that scrap outlay - especially with the cost and rarity of drone parts.

Just wanted to ask FTL players what their strategies are, how they like to play and where they have had success. I've got to Sector 8 but still haven't beaten the game and am looking for new ways of doing things as I trawl through endless runs seeking seemingly impossible success.
I'm still using the Kestrel ship, I have a couple of others but find their starting equipment too weak for my style. I usually like to upgrade my shields to stage 2 or 3 before leaving the 1st or 2nd sector, and also look for a store where I can get drone control and, hopefully, a defense drone. Beyond that, I just kick arse as best I can - but I can never seem to accumulate enough upgrades in order to be really capable of looking after myself past sector 7. It becomes a bit desperate. So are there any things I can get to make it easier in the long run?
Edit: Now may have something hidden for teh Ninjas. :)
