Hopefully Steamgifts will let me paste this whole thing in... :)

Ok, let's start with the easy part. The pity puzzle "https://www.youtube.com/watch?pity=okgYK&v=cu1yijNTeus" - pity=okgYK should lead you to https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/okgYK/fox-hime if you've ever tried a puzzle before. So if you didn't find this giveaway, maybe READ THE PUZZLE GUIDE again. :) And good luck with the rest of this thing... :)

Anyway, here's your puzzle. Two thousand digits of pi, plus some line noise because like I said, I couldn't remember how the script worked. Oh well. :(

Here's a hint for the future: don't believe everything anything you read in a puzzle, especially if I wrote it. :) Let's try again:

It's 1909 characters (I counted!) that look like digits of pi, but I don't know for sure. It starts out right, but I didn't memorise 2000 digits of pi. Maybe check somehow? And there are some letters mixed in, that are obviously not digits of pi. Maybe that's the "line noise"?

Oh, right, "line noise"? Assuming you're old enough to remember what that looks like from the bbs days, how does creating a puzzle by hand add line noise to your digits of pi? I mean, come on. :)

So now what? Well, you could start by getting rid of everything that looks like a digit, and seeing what's left. This will work to find the first giveaway, but (spoiler!) you'll be wanting those digits back later. But for now, it's good enough, and gives you:

goODluCkrEadIngthIshumaNsIwAsgOinGtotRolltHATPuZzLeSoLvinGScriPtbUtiaMlAzYsOscREwiTFeELFrEetOtrOlLYOurSelFTHougHITSTOOHARDD⓪Y⑦jwii???

Ok, it looks like words, but it's hard to read. So try this:

goOD luCk rEadIng thIs humaNs I wAs gOinG to tRoll tHAT PuZzLe SoLvinG ScriPt bUt i aM lAzY sO scREw iT FeEL FrEe tO trOlL YOurSelF THougH ITSTOOHARD D0Y7jwii ???

Or, with punctuation, "Good luck reading this, humans! :) I was going to troll that puzzle solving script but I am lazy so screw it. :) Feel free to troll yourself, though. :) ITSTOOHARD = D0Y7jwii :)

Which should lead you to http://www.itstoohard.com/puzzle/D0Y7jwii which points to the first giveaway, i.e. https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/Ca1E9/middle-earth-shadow-of-microtransactions

Cool, solved one! Only three left! :)

Now, for this next part, maybe you get the idea, and maybe you don't. It's tied up with the 112 (I counted again!) goofy mixed-case letters, somehow. If you get lucky, you might wonder if that mixed-case business is hiding a message, i.e. maybe it's encoded in base 2? Let's see what we get from:

Or, if you want me to spell it out:

01100010 01000101 01010011 00110111 01001001 01110010 01110001

Or, if you really want me to spell it out, try ASCII:

32 48 41 52 44 3d 54 62 45 53 37 49 72 71
2 H A R D = T b E S 7 I r q

Which should lead you to http://www.itstoohard.com/puzzle/TbES7Irq which gives you the second giveaway, https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/5H4sH/nioh-complete-edition-ren-wang-complete-edition

Cool, that's two solved, only two left! :) These things sure are easy when you know the answer! :)

So now let's go back to that big "digits of pi" thing. Do you remember where I said maybe check somehow? Well, if you compare 1909 real digits of pi to our "digits of pi", obviously the text message characters are wrong digits - but some of the numbers are wrong, too. What's up with that?

Oh, and while we're on the subject, what's up with 1909? Hmmm, did you want a hint for that part too, before I explain it? :) Well, 1909 is the product of two primes, 83 and 23. So maybe it's something to do with public-key cryptography? Umm, nice idea, but no. Let's worry about that part later. :)

So, we have:

As you can see, compared to the real digits of pi, some of our "digits of pi" are +1, and some are -1. Hopefully the previous part of the puzzle, with 112 mixed-case characters hiding a message in base 2, will give you the idea. With 128 (I counted again!) wrong digits, calling every "+1" a 1, and every "-1" a 0, we get:

01010100 01001111 01001111 01001000 01000001 01010010 01000100 00111101
01101010 01101011 01011000 01101010 01110101 01010101 01100011 01101100

And if you got this far, you know ASCII when you see it:

54 4f 4f 48 41 52 44 3d 6a 6b 58 6a 75 55 63 6c
T O O H A R D = j k X j u U c l

http://www.itstoohard.com/puzzle/jkXjuUcl gives you https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/5Z5FJ/ken-folletts-the-pillars-of-the-earth - cool, only one left! Almost finished! :)

Oh, by the way, this final itstoohard thing contained an actual hint! :)

Sorry, there's no hint. Instead, here's a pity jpeg for anyone who waited a whole day for nothing. :) And the picture https://www.wired.com/wp-content/uploads/images_blogs/wiredscience/2013/10/new_panels.jpg :)

A bit of googling should lead you to the source of that image, i.e. https://www.wired.com/2013/11/arecibo-50th-anniversary/ - it seems to be a picture from the Arecibo radio telescope, in 1974. Hmm, is that a hint? Spoiler: yes! :)

Now, you might get lucky and stumble across something called the "Arecibo message", and you might not. If you do, and you noticed previously the "2000 digits of pi" were actually 1909 characters, maybe the reason for 83 * 23 = 1909 makes sense now.

But here's something funny - none of the three solvers needed that hint. Here are their explanations, which probably make more sense than mine:

nickchanger: I counted the spaces and the same numbers repeated all the time but they didn't make sense as a cipher so I realized it will be a picture :p

Ryzhehvost: After making a file - it still made no sense to me, but I noticed that some markings go one after another, and some other have space between them... it looked like pattern, so I decided I need to check it. Find&Replace marked places as @@, unmarked as spaces, copy&paste to notepad, change window width... bingo!

nhahtdh: I'm not surprised that you can encode all those GA into the puzzle, and I know that the last piece of information lies in the position of the differences, but only thought of turning it into an image recently.

So don't feel bad, I never would have solved this part, either. :)

Here's the idea: compare the real digits of pi to our "digits of pi", call each correct digit 0, and each incorrect digit 1. But this time it's not a message in base 2, it's a bunch of hmm, monochrome pixels, in an 83*23 rectangle. Maybe having 1909 characters helps with that idea, or maybe you just resize your text editor until the message appears by magic. :) Assuming Steamgifts doesn't screw it up, let's see how it goes:

So that's the final giveaway, https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/CAX7n/little-busters-english-edition :) Thank you to everyone, and congratulations to the winners! :)

Original Message:

I suppose cartoon fans can guess what's hiding in here. And yes, I know it's not the same thing, so you don't have to tell me. :)

For people who hate reading, or puzzles, or anything that comes between you and your profitz: click here for free stuff!

Pity "puzzle" hiding in the youtube video: have pity! And if that video's blocked, try this one: have pity!

And, hmm, well, I was going to make a puzzle last year but it got boring so I bailed. Sorry.

If you like, imagine I kept working on that puzzle for months, piling it full of loot, just for you. Spoiler: nope.

Today I found a few of the leftover pieces and threw this crap together. And I couldn't remember how the script worked so I did it by hand, and probably screwed the whole thing up. Oh well.

For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

Anyway, here's your puzzle. Two thousand digits of pi, plus some line noise because like I said, I couldn't remember how the script worked. Oh well. :(

Hmm, just to be perfectly evil the simple giveaway you'll (hopefully) find isn't Nioh, it's some other game... :) But after finding that you should be able to find the Nioh giveaway without too much trouble... :) It will probably make more sense when I write the explanations... :) But good luck if you don't bail on it... :)

Please state what level the giveaways are for, so people of lower levels will not waste their time solving a puzzle for a giveaway they are unable to participate in. Thanks.

I've heard of people solving puzzles for fun, instead of solely for their own profitz, but that's probably just crazy talk...

Since I would hate to inconvenience anyone by making giveaways they can't enter, let's see if I can help!

Generally, when someone has a puzzle, check their profile. In this case, I see one public Level 0 giveaway for some crap game, and various "Invite Only" giveaways for Levels 0 to 5. Now, you could just start working on the puzzle and see what happens, but since that might waste too much of your time, please don't do that.

Let's see... After checking your wishlist, I noticed none of these games are on it. So even if you were to completely solve the puzzle, it's unlikely you would want to enter that final Level 0 giveaway, since (spoiler!) it's just some crap visual novel. And if you were to make a quick giveaway yourself to reach Level 1, you'd be stuck trying for the crap "free stuff" giveaway, which is also a visual novel, or one other game which happens to be a different crap visual novel. Hmm... Nioh is Level 2, and some game with microtransactions is Level 5.

Well, that's sorted. You can safely ignore this entire puzzle.

Glad to be of service! Thank you!

This is a giveaway-focused website, not a puzzle-solving-focused website.
I do not personally care for the games given, but that doesn't mean someone else wouldn't care and wouldn't be severely disappointed to know that they are unattainable to them.
Also notice how most other puzzle makers state the level of the games in the title; they must be doing something right, yes?
Lastly, you could simply state the level in the title with an easy fix, but you decided to be preachy about it for no reason. Yes, there is a very small percentage of people who would solve a puzzle for the sole reason of solving it without any wish to participate in the giveaway, but that would be an exception in a giveaway site such as this one.

Oh, so you think participants getting out of their way to check the puzzle maker's profile to investigate whether they statistically do giveaways of a certain level is more time-efficient and fair than just simply stating the LVL in your puzzles title? Gotcha.

Man, it's just a click. He used his own money to buy games and is giving away those to random strangers and you can't do a single click to see if you are "going to waste your precious time" solving the puzzle?
Also, what are you doing in this category

Discussions Puzzles

If you can't even investigate his profile to see what levels and how many giveaways he has ongoing?

For people who hate reading, or puzzles, or anything that comes between you and your profitz: click here for free stuff!

Thank you for your advice! I don't think reading it was a waste of time, even though I'm probably going to keep doing whatever it is I do around here. :) Maybe I'm just a big jerk. Spoiler: yes. :)

Stating the level of these puzzles in the title would be a change, but not necessarily a fix, because it's not broken. It's just how it is.

Hmm, no, unfortunately I don't notice what most other puzzle makers do because I'm lazy and don't try to solve them any more, so I'm a bit out of touch. Mainly I visit Steamgifts to learn about new bundles or good deals I've overlooked, i.e. if I see 50 different giveaways for something, there's either a new bundle or a free thing out there, so I know to check the discussions area for it. Sometimes I visit to give away stuff.

Sometimes I make a public giveaway with some stuff to read in the description, including a link to a private giveaway. Sometimes I make an actual puzzle. Sometimes I tell people what level the giveaways are, and sometimes I don't. Sometimes I don't even tell people there is a puzzle, and they have to notice and/or figure it out on their own. Since it's the weekend and I don't have to do anything important, here's some recent examples of puzzles / puzzle-shaped objects / whatever:

This giveaway is one of a pile of public giveaways, hiding some private giveaways, hiding one more giveaway, which wasn't exactly a puzzle, since it only required a bit of reading, and a tiny bit of noticing. Nothing says "PUZZLE INSIDE!!!" - either you read giveaway descriptions and notice, or you don't. Oh well. As you might imagine, a lot of people like free stuff, but not all of them like reading.

And here is a clearly marked LEVEL 5 PUZZLE, in the puzzle category, where the only puzzle is can you copy and paste one of the answers provided. Yeah, probably not a puzzle.

Here is another clearly marked LEVEL 5 PUZZLE, in the puzzle category, although you may need to read to notice it, since the level is not listed in the subject. It's one more tricky puzzle requiring people copy and paste the provided answer to solve. Let's hope nobody wasted too much time on that one.

Here is one of a pile of public giveaways that were hiding a real actual puzzle, which was not marked anywhere. Some people noticed I had a couple "Invite Only" giveaways running, and looked around for the puzzle. Most people didn't. The explanation for the puzzle-challenged was posted later, at https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/Yu1DL/hiding-things-in-giveaway-descriptions

This is another evil puzzle in the puzzle category, with no level listed. I'll try to remember to feel bad about that later.

Here is a public giveaway with a tricky giveaway hiding inside a youtube link, well maybe it's tricky if you've never seen ASCII before. Nothing says it's a puzzle, you just have to read the giveaway description and notice. Alas, not everyone did.

Here is a deceptive Off-Topic bundle leftovers key dump, full of keys and wallet codes just because, with some giveaways linked too. And one hidden giveaway for people who were able to stop madly pasting the free keys long enough to notice. Since nobody said thanks for the good stuff in the penultimate batch of "free bundle leftover keys" I kept the last ones for myself. Oh well.

This is a public giveaway, with a giveaway hiding inside an ellipsis in the giveaway description, which someone might consider a puzzle since it requires clicking on something. Inside that giveaway was one more hidden giveaway hiding inside a youtube link, which required umm, noticing. None of them were pointed out, so you had to, well, think or something.

Here is a public giveaway, with a private giveaway hiding inside a youtube link, that required recognising ASCII, again. I think there was one more giveaway hiding in there, but I can't remember how to solve it, and since nobody else solved it I didn't bother writing an explanation. Oh well.

This is another public giveaway, with a private giveaway hiding inside a youtube link, again, that required noticing.

And this is one more public giveaway, with a private giveaway hiding in a bogus link, that required umm, noticing.

Finally, since I'm getting bored typing all this stuff, here is one more public giveaway, with another private giveaway hiding inside a youtube link, that required noticing.

I'm not much for making puzzles, really. Mostly it's that I think this place would be better if everyone read giveaway descriptions. That's kinda my thing, complaining about giveaway entering bots, oh, that and giving away terrible boobie garbage games. And lying about giving away bundle leftovers. And being a jerk.

Maybe Steamgifts is a place where other people buy games for you, and maybe Steamgifts is a place where you buy games for other people. Maybe it's both.

I don't tell other people how to give away their games. But maybe I'll tell them what level these giveaways are after all, just to be contrary. :)

Good luck!

Well, I don't know if those things are still around... There was a forum thing in the last month or so reminding people not to use them or else, but the "or else" never seemed to materialise. Or if it did, I never noticed anyone complaining about it. Oh well...

Nothing misleading here you're in the puzzle category of the topics. Maybe you need to spend more than 3 weeks here to understand that the forums are different from the main page of the site. Very rarely will people actually put the lvl of the giveaways in the title and it's more of the exception than the rule.

How do you feel about people who don't state that they are giving away country-restricted games? They are awful, right? Because they waste people's points by not stating that their games are unobtainable to some people?
And, well I'll be damned, such a practice is also against site rules, and for good reason.
Now, not stating the level is pretty much the same; only instead of points, it is time that is wasted.

not a puzzle-solving-focused website

But this is the puzzle-solving-focused part of the forums (it's right there in the name).

Also notice how most other puzzle makers state the level of the games in the title

Which forums are you visiting? As of this post, only 8 of the ~46 puzzle creators on the first page actually state a level in the title. Or is there a different definition of "most" you're using?

So... I guess we should expect some hints?

I believe you can refresh your itstoohard thing to see the "hints" - but they aren't hints for the puzzle, as you'll see. :)

Only the final itstoohard thing has a "real hint" - but the timer on that one's set for umm, 24 hours? So anyone finding it at this point is screwed. Oops. :)

It's too late for this puzzle, but I'll have to spend some time thinking about hints next time, so the people who solve it don't feel ripped off by last-minute hints spoiling their chances, if that makes any sense...

No need to apologise - I got that answer first try and didn't need a hint; I wasn't complaining, just admiring the humour of "there will be no hints; hints in 10 mins; psych!" sequence. It was a fun puzzle even if I didn't find Nioh (I was one of the regex people for Shadow of War).
