I don't think any scary movie has ever scared me except for one. Was in my early teens and watched the movie by myself late at night in the dark. The movie is "Thir13en Ghosts" from 2001.

Almost any horror movie that comes out of Hollywood is laughable. Drag Me To Hell, Insidius, Sinister, The Conjuring... It's just a bunch of cheap jump scares.
The only movie that left an impression on me was The Exorcist because I watched it when I was 12 years old, alone in the room and around midnight.
The more recent movie worth mentioning is The Descent because it lets your imagination and fear of the unknown fill the gaps. Good horror movies are about atmosphere and tension, not gore or jumpscares.

As some others here, Poltergeist. When I was 12 or something like that.
To this day I refuse to watch it again or any of the sequels. And I won't let anyone watch it if I'm in the house.
Before Poltergeist there was the 1990 Night of the Living Dead, but I was really young (probably 6-7) and they shouldn't have let me watch it. This one I found when I was older and it was mostly funny rather than scary.

I LOVE horror movies. My mom and I used to watch every horror movie we could find when I was growing up... Which is probably why I never have nightmares - I like the horror a little too much.
As for a movie that stuck with me ... bare with me, it's old, so am I but: Gargoyles (1972) - That movie really stuck in my head for years (I saw it in the 80's) but I still love it's cheap, yet scary, effects.
If you want a laugh IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068622/?ref_=nv_sr_2

is wolf creek 2 actually good though? i loved the first one but i'm a bit nervous to ruin it if the second one isn't good. grave encounters is pretty awesome. it kinda killed my desire to go ghost hunting though!

Grotesque (Japanese) was really messed up. But when it comes to a horror film that leaves a mark... hmmmm... I remember watching House Of A 1000 Corpses for the first time and I was so stoned on some fucked up weed that it made the movie more disturbing to watch than if I was to watch it not stoned... so, I guess watching House Of A 1000 Corpses for the first time while super-stoned counts right?

Watched the original the hills have eyes before going camping in the woods :-). The remake and the sequel were also ok.
And a good vengeance torture movie: 7 days
Also like the wrong turn movies especially the first one with Eliza Dushku.

Human Centipede... That and the sequal are not films to watch whilst intoxicated...
Also the first time I watched the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre when I was a kid... One of the only films to ever give me an adrenaline rush.

The Exorcist. The original old school one. I know it looks hokey by today's standards, but it petrified me. I bought the series of all 5 Exorcist movies about 4 years ago. I threw the whole pack in the trash after the first.
I watch horror movies frequently. They're pretty hilarious and I love mocking them. This one though, never again.

After looking at my list of movies yesterday, I was wondering, have the people of SG ever watched a horror movie that left a psychological mark on you? For me, it would be The Ring series. When I was younger, I used to love horror movies. Still do. But one movie in particular left a mark on me. The Ring. I can't pinpoint why, to be honest. But that movie, to this day, terrifies the hell out of me. I still have nightmares occasionally. In fact, I was reading the book when I was 10 years old that the movie was based off of, and I couldn't sleep for two days straight.
