I have been noticing some difficulties with teamspeak audio and finally tracked them down, some were easy, so here is my steps to make Teamspeak recording friendly
- press <alt>-p to bring up you preferences
- go to the capture in the side menu (id not already there
- set to push to talk or continuous transmission. Voice activation will clip off parts of words as it takes 1/2 a secon or so to start after detecting sound.
- check the advanced options box
- uncheck the Automatic voice gain box

People keep asking me when I think this contest will end, truth is I really don't know, I am waiting an a few things out of my control. Firstly, the group I'm planning to do the reward giveaways is new, it hasn't yet been recognized by steamgifts, From what I understand groups are synced periodically server side, and I have no idea when the next sync is. secondly I'd like more entries, I do have several people that are not pleased with the current version and want to re-record. There are also several people that said the would be recording in a couple days, as I am still waiting for the group syncs I told them there was no hurry, lastly I have have 137 minutes left on soundcloud, the average song is 4 minutes so if I get ~38 more songs it will be the end of this contest regardless of other factors.
I am also planning on buying a few games for the prize pool during the steam summer sale, I have enough bundle games to fill all 50 slots, but would like a few non bundle game interspersed. For people waiting, I will announce a last call 24 hours before the contest ends, , and update this thread as I know more details

I've got my second takedown request today, I didn't mention the first, as I was able to find a version of the song released under a free use license, and the singer re-recorded using that music. Alas I wasn't as lucky on the second. The solution I found was to upload the vocals only, I will provide a link to a YouTube video of the song so you can listen to the music it goes with if you chose to. I personal believe karaoke falls under fair use and is allowed in not for profit use, but have no will to argue the issue. Thank you to everyone that participated so far, I hope I go the entire contest with out having to deal with this again.

Because I talked to one of the steamgifts moderators and was asked not to circumvent potential copyright issues, and told in no terms if they received a take down request they would comply. While I was never told what I could or could not do, I have decided not to force a issue if possible.
Also. let me know what time is good for you, I have nothing major planned for this week, I try to get 8 hours of sleep a day, but am not too fussy about when I get it.

So, to enter, participants need to upload their cover songs on SoundCloud and post them to you, correct? Can I use my own instruments instead of getting a karaoke version (though it might defeat the purpose of the "karaoke" contest). Might enter if this event will last until weekend.

The recording should be done with Ceebers on their Teamspeak server (if you do not wish to install Teamspeak, you may be able to work something out).
I think using your own instruments should be fine, but not sure if Teamspeak will have issues picking that up with your voice. You should be able to record your instrumental separately if need be, which will serve as your background track.
You're definitely safe for the weekend - the event will be open until 50 entries as of now.

Temalu is mostly right, the problem I've had with instruments over teamspeak appears to be from the algorithms it uses, music comes out quite flat loosing some of it's upper register.

A few things to note
So far the best way to do karaoke over teamspeak seems to be with the singer listening to the song over headphones, I'll recording their voice and then add in the music in post production. Playing the music over teamspeak distorts the top end of the music. It is helpful if you chose a song that has an instrumental version already, While I can take any song and minimize the original singer, i can not remove them entirely.
I am unsure how long this competition will take, as I don't know the amount of interest there will be

EDIT 2 Someone asked me if they could record more then one song, I considered this and said, yes, but new people will be given president for recording and editing, and if you get more then one of your songs chosen by the voting at the end of the contestant, you still only win once, the top 3 singers, not songs win prizes
