Good afternoon everyone! Well, it's afternoon here anyways! :)

I've popped in and out over the past few months and I've noticed an overall negativity surrounding the forums when I visited. I wanted to share a few thoughts with you all in hopes that it will help us treat one another better and hopefully, with more love and kindness. The one thing we all have in common is our mutual love of this great website and we have the ability to either keep building on the positive environment we have here or to let it turn into something toxic.

  • Show Empathy - I think first and foremost, we all need to remember and keep in the back of our minds that this is a forum on the internet. With that said, there will be people from all backgrounds, ages, colors and in all different places in life. What you say on here could have either a positive or a negative effect on their life. So, show the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. We've already lost one great member in Rachel let's try not to lose anymore over petty arguments and disagreements that we can easily settle without letting it get completely out of hand. Keep in mind, if someone is saying or behaving in a hurtful way, that could be a sign of something deeper going on in their life and what they could need right now is to be shown a little love and patience. :)

  • Spread Positivity - With the aforementioned, let me encourage you to choose the option to spread positivity. Not only here in the forums, but take that into your everyday life. I'll be completely blunt with you, when we leave this world, the only thing we will leave behind is the memories others will have of us. Life is entirely too short and precious to argue over things that could have been easily prevented if we had shown each other a little empathy from the start. If someone has offended you in some way, the best way to counter that is by being the bigger person, showing empathy and trying to somehow bring a smile to their face. Fight negativity by showing them positivity, instead of sinking to their level. Nothing will show negative people more satisfaction than letting them know you let them get under your skin. Set an example for others to follow. :)

  • Learn to Forgive If someone has offended you here or shown you something less than a positive attitude, let me encourage you to show the forgiveness that both you and them deserve. I have been wronged many times in my life, and holding on to the hurt, anger and resentment 9 times out of 10 does nothing, but bring me down. While the person who did the hurting has most likely moved on with life. Don't that let that one small moment bring the rest of your day down, or in contrast, your week or month.

If you feel like you're words aren't important or will have no impact on another person's life, no matter how great or small, I will remind you that a member here committed suicide after making this thread, aftermath here. We need to be reminded of this, because I have seen some serious hate in the forums these past few months.

With that said, I will remind you, that this IS the internet were talking about and there will be sarcasm and trolls and really hateful people here. By the very definition. It's the internet. How YOU respond, will determine the outcome. :)

If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person. - Mr. Rogers

Yeah, but the inverse of that would be "every life should have one ninth of a cat"... or something.

Well, realistically, you can have nine cats in your life, but you cannot have one ninth of a cat in your life.
Okay, maybe you can, but this cat would be, well, kinda dead. Unless it's Schrödinger's cat.

This picture looks silly and funny ofc... But if you think about it. What it's showing is true, Many people tend to go few levels up in terms of anger when they're online. It;s so easy typing a few lines to a stranger or even a person you know well on your pc at home that you don't really think about what it is you're actually saying rather than if you would be talking to them in person. I know I have in the past. I've gotten just a little bit older to think before I speak in RL and also online, so it's been a while. Thanks for the thread, positivisme is always good to share

Yeah, it's easy to do and say stuff you normally wouldn't if you don't have to face the consequences IRL. I also notice that while on the internet, I have a harder time controlling my anger then IRL. IRL I almost never get angry and have very good self control, but on the internet I've said some things I'm not proud off...

What you say on here could have either a positive or a negative effect on their life.

Or no impact at all. There are people here that just don't care at all about what people say to them. Just want to throw that out there.

But yeah, I agree with you. There seems to be a lot of negativity here. I know it's the internet and all, but people should really just respect each other. You don't need to be friends with anyone, but at least respect the others opinions and emotions...

People can say things don't affect them, but every little things adds up to a larger picture. Every little bit matters, which is why it's so important to spread positivity.

Ah, Fyantastic. Always the happy and cheery fellow you are. Your presence here is much appreciated, please keep being you.
As a fellow someone who has popped in and out over the past few months, let me try to put this in the least vulgar way possible:
I honestly have no idea what the fuck is going on here.

That's how much of a rock I've been under. I went AWOL for the longest time and the next thing I know, a few of my favorite groups just up and died. I still have no idea what's going on (everything I've heard rumors about has just been summarized into one word), nor will I go out of my way to find out.
Nevertheless, I've always followed the three tips that you're offering to the community, and I'll continue playing my part.

Thank you for your words, Fyan. Back to lurking.

you know the biggest problem here?
people can't accept others have a different opinion than them, so they have to shove their thoughts in everyone's faces and expect them to accept it.
and also people that think whatever they do is positive, "positive" being subjective to each person. what can be good for me, is bad for others.

seems you either go with the flow or shut up, you can't say anything. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Would you really say that would be our biggest problem right now? Not accepting of another user's opinion? I would say an even more bigger problem is having that conflict of opinions spiral into a hateful conversation instead of it being talked about in a polite respectful manner like adults. Multiply that by ten or twenty, and we have a good picture of what is going on in SG.

Also, I would argue that a person might be more accepting of an opinion if it were presented differently. :)

i'm not banned on sgtools, so let's skip the first part of your wall. :3
and i still disagree on how cg handled the ref issue, but whatever. it's his site, he can ban me or put 50 banners on the homepage if he wants. still, this doesn't mean i'm ok with it.

i still keep seeing people in bundle threads reposting replies with the "correct way to post bundle tables". i'm not that stupid, i know why they keep doing it.

don't assumed stuff about my complains with nominations -.-
i clearly said what i thought in the thread dedicated to them 2 days ago. some people got so offended with it lugum had to close it (despite him still running the ga posted there), so i decided to make fun of how nominations are handled on sg.
it's always nice to be nominated, but personally i find stupid if i had 1-2 friends nominating me in every event. that's what's been happening since i came back to sg almost 2 years ago, always the same 20-40 people nominated in absolutely everything by the same friends. i understand those users are renowned, but, the same 10 friends always mentioning them?
come on, it's getting worse than a whitelist4whitelist thread.

you might have read a comment by me where i said i can't enter sgtools because i had a private profile (and later because i rarely bother any more to pass them). :3

And again, it's someone's event, and that same someone is paying for the gifts and taking the time to organize it all.
You feel like it's unfair?
Then nominate someone who you think it's not as known and should get a chance, and talk to your friends about maybe doing the same.

i don't feel it's unfair on the GA creator's side (he sets the rules in his event), but it's an unfair advantage nominees get because their friends nominate them all the time. it feels like a whitelist-event-thing, those people will get a pass for sure.

and i already talked to people, i posted what i thought about this in that thread by lugum which of course got out of control, but not by him, not by me, not by tzaar, nor by anyone that the "nomination-police" claims are negative all the time on sg. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And the solution of not agreeing with someone is mockery and ridicule? That goes only so far, especially when it is the only weapon used all the time. Parody can be a good way to express discontent against the system in general, but when you can only use parody as the final answer to anything, that is not an answer, that is turning yourself into the local court fool.

Technical writer. A good part of it is identifying the parts where the technicians who work with the product just assume that the information there is enough to understand and work with the product, but as someone who has a limited understanding of the deeper mechanics, I can tell if the information is not sufficient enough for a reader. (The tricky part is knowing enough of the field to also not oversimplify the text and turn it into a dumb marketing bullshit but a source of information.)

to be honest - what wallister did in Mullys' thread - with the whole troll-lo-lol-lol thing made me sad - I did not expect that kind of thread hijacking - it was not expected :( - I saw the thread as more of a parody though, about nomination threads, not as any personal attack, and that is why I was saddened by the constant troll posts - but to be fair I am british, and parody, cynicism and sarcasm are part of our humour makeup from birth - so perhaps I read it wrong (and yes I had read the other threads) - we make threads that make us chuckle based on our sense of humour I guess, but we cannot be sure that others share that sense of humour I suppose :(

It was about another conversation, a much longer one and it is now completely deleted. What you saw there had a longer road that led there, it was just the first time it was brought to the general public.

And while what you say is true and I love the Brits for it (and even the Americans, they are also great at laughing at their own shortcomings, stereotypes, and in generally at themselves—except the Republicans, but to their defence, one of the main requirements of being one is to be born without any sense of humour), sadly it is not the case here. I wish it would be. British humour is great.

yeah I got that - I was just saddened by that one specific thing - cause even if they had some basis for their argument (and in some instances - not all - I did) - doing that to the threads just made me lose all sentiment for their cause - that thread was 'to me' a parody, nothing more :) - the spreading effect took hold though it appears :( - and yes, we all really do drink that much tea :), that is soo funny when people realise that the stereotype is sooo true :)

Yeah, uhm, about that. If it can be something you may find eventually in the Wayback Machine of the Internet Archive, it is not exactly private. At least if it would be an actual court case of libel/defamation, your lawyer would advise to pay up before a judge sees the case, as it would be the same as using the comments of some random obscure blog post to do the same.
I'm not holding against you that you were discussing people behind their backs, because it is quite common human nature. But you really should have added each other on Steam for a private chat room instead of using something anyone could just click on—even if they purposefully had to go there.

I purposefully decided to sit it out even though I have my own thoughts about it, but since I don't see it as a situation that can be solved or could be ironed out in a peaceful way, I just said what really was bugging me and hope that eventually both sides will just get bored and finally decide to stop it.
