The idea is simple. Present a problem you think plagues this forum, and offer a constructive solution. Ideally it should be a solution that people can implement by changing their point of view and/or their behavior, but it can also be a technical solution, e.g. a change to site rules or the way it works (you can assume cg is reading this, assumption is free). No walls of text please, and leave the saltiness & bitterness out of this thread. Be concise & constructive.

The key for Grim Dawn was contributed by PeteOzzy. I'll use random.org to pick a winner from those who present a problem and suggest a solution. If the winner already owns Grim Dawn, I'll look for games on their wishlist that I may have keys for, and if successful I will let them pick one. If that doesn't work I'll just use random.org to pick another winner.

Update: Winner picked; key sent :-)

Thank you!

When you see a long post that includes a tl;dr line, what do you typically do?

View Results
Read the tl;dr first, and if it's reasonably interesting read the rest of the post.
Only read the tl;dr. Life is too short to read long posts.
Read the post from the beginning, making sure to skip the tl;dr if it's presented first. I hate spoilers.
Just skip to the Dan Quayle line and vote for it.

Ok, I don't know how to describe this problem, because my English is not that fluent, but I will try the best I can.

Problem:In the forum, some comments have a lot of replies, but it's hard to see which comment is replying to which. Example 1 Example 2
Solution:In every comment, beside the "Permalink", we could add a "Parent" link. If you click on the parent link, it will lead you to the comment that it's replying to. Take reddit for example, something like this.

This is indeed a problem. As workaround (which you're probably aware of), place the cursor on the left edge of the comment, then scroll up with your mouse wheel without moving the cursor sideways, until you hit the parent comment. A link would be more convenient, but this workaround is sufficient for me.

Personally I have more issue with missing new comments in threads of interest, and this can only be solved with a flat forum view (which pretty much removes the whole comment context/nesting).

Following from my not-so-helpful post yesterday, I did think of one minor problem:

Problem: People using SGTools because they want to give to those with better sent/won ratios etc. Some people hate SGTools for some reason.

Solution: SG giveaways allow you to choose not only the level of giveaway, but also the ratio of sent/won. Would be great if SG could actually calculate the real CV to do this properly...

well purple is half blue so you should only half resent.

And pink is half red. While purple is blue/red.
So i should only resent one quarter...

I'm pretty sure pink is not half red, but light red. It probably can be considered pink also if it's shifted towards magenta and isn't pure red, as long as it's light (pale).

Problem: People complaining that others are winning too much...

Solution: Ignore them and look at yourself... Why are you giving away games in the first place? Is it because it's from your heart? Or because you want to keep up the ratio up and not be judged? (Look at my win/sent ratio... It might be a big difference, but look at my real CV ratio... I've still given more than I've received, because I sometimes like to get lots of bundled games for an un-bundled game)

Problem: People answering or shouting out ridiculous crap or in other words "trolls".

Solution: Stop being a dick before you open your mouth to talk trash you should first think about how you would feel in the given position. And if you can't help yourself about that you can still "troll" in a friendly way without verbal abuse, swearing and offending others.

Problem: Some users never win such as myself and then make threads in discussion.
Solution: Change the entry button so it displays your odds (or make the number of entries more prominent somehow) but that won't convince people who don't know how to math.

What formula do you suggest that does not involve division by zero? ;-)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I know you where joking. But this would easily be avoided with an "if" function. If number of entries is less or equals the number of given copies set probability to 100 %. If not use formula (number of copies/number of entries)*100. It may still be a problem if someone decides to make a zero copies giveaway ^^

I actually don't think there's a problem to solve here. Calculating GA odds doesn't involve division by zero. It's basically 1/entries*copies (for a single GA), and a sum of all per-GA odds to get the odds to ever win a GA on this site. In the case of the user above (fubarnocaps), both numbers would be 0, as he never entered any GA. I haven't given up convincing him to enter (and create) a GA to celebrate 3000 comments on this site :-)

Problem ; You can't exclude certain regions from a giveaway + you can't choose multiple region restrictions for your giveaway( for e.g China + Hong Kong/Taiwan)
Solution ; An "Exclude this/these regions from your giveaway" option and the option to choose more than one region restriction. Also add new regions like Europe, North America etc.

This would be a good addition. In the meanwhile it would be best to clearly state in the description of the giveaway that the game is region locked, and provide the specifics. Many users don't read GA descriptions, so you may still end up with a winner that can't activate the game, but at least you'd be able to get a reroll without the winner's agreement (as far as I know).

Problem: People tend to think that the community owes them something only because they entered shit-ton of giveaways.
Solution: Don't take anything as granted, be patient and polite.

Problem: I think the forums and the community at large are riddled, with a hostile, wannabe-cop attitude which make it an unpleasant place.

Solution: None, really. That's just the spirit of this community.

I don't see much hostility in this forum and the little I see I don't take to heart, which is one of the reasons why I enjoy this place and consider it to be pleasant. It could I'm looking at things through rose-colored glasses, but it could also be that you'd have a better time here if you adjust your point of view a bit.

We're not all the same and that's one of the beautiful things of life. Now, I promise I'm not trolling and I mean it: in which direction do you suggest I should adjust my point of view?

About adjusting point of view, just realize that not everything that looks hostile or bad-tampered actually is. Tone is difficult to convey in text and it's not always possible to find the right emoticon that suits what you're trying to say. Some things are just more nuanced.

Your gentle approach has its merits, but as far as I am concerned, the sheer existence of SGTools is enough demonstration of the hostility I am talking about.

Problem: Trains
Solution: Post the links to giveaway so that users don't have to spend 5 minutes clicking "next" just to see that there's no game he wants. BONUS: creator also doesn't have to spend an hour creating and linking the giveaways.

I'll chime in with the 'free' game giveaway. I wonder if there's a way to just completely separate giveaways for 0cv games. To my not-very-code-friendly mind I would imagine that it would involve basically duplicating all the current framework, which is less than ideal. But it might provide those who do code it all a line of attack for integrating these kinds of giveaways. Then of course there's always the problem of integrating it into the site (for both who want to make such a giveaway, and for those wanting to enter them)

And to add a new idea (i think):
problem: when browsing through trains, I sometimes forget if a game is on my wishlist or not, so i have to open the stream page link in a new window to check it out.

Solution: add an overlay (an icon or something) to the displayed images that would let you know a game is on your wishlist.
