Are they Eating Dogs?
I think it's a shame that people no longer butcher their own meat, buying there prepackaged plastic warped meat is causing a disconnect between the people and their food
that leads to children beveling some Disney fairy tail about talking animals (I mean this literally, I took my grandson to the zoo and he asked me why the animals weren't answering his questions)
And don't get me started on those PETA wackos.
There is nothing morally or socially wrong with eating animals. There should be nothing traumatizing about taking a pet and butchering it for dinner. Personally I do not eat dog, but that's mainly because it's a tough chewy bad tasting meat. If I was starving, I probably would eat dog or cat (not much meat on a cat doubt that would be a full meal even)
Get off your high horse and start living in the real world already.

Well, chimps are eaten in parts of Africa, yet they were granted human rights in the US last year... probably overturned by now, but it's an interesting analogy. If chimps are food and have human rights, why can't humans be served as food?

While I do eat meat and I don't have much of a problem fishing and then preparing what I fishedbecause the smell is different, I don't like the idea of killing the animals myself. Not because I think it's wrong, but because I can't stand the smell of blood. I'm the kinda guy that likes to cook meat untill there's not a drop of blood left, its smell is just revolting for me.
So no, I wouldn't butcher a pet. Also there's the fact that I have feels for my pets, I wouldn't kill my dog or my cat after raising them since they were little, that's kinda psychotic.

Just a tidbit: the red liquid that comes out of rare meat isn't, in fact, blood, but myoglobin and water. Almost all blood gets drained when the animal is butchered.

To add to the others. Here is a video & article from the New York Times. It says "As many as 10 million dogs and four million cats are consumed in China each year, according to animal rights groups."

What a stupid thing to have an argument with a friend about. Does the answer effect your life in any way other than having the knowledge that this does exist? You do know that you could have found out the answer by looking it up on the internet?

Eleven countries around the globe still eat dog meat. They are: China, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Polynesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Arctic and Antarctic and two cantons in Switzerland.

Thanks for the advice, I'm not going to be discussing anything out of pure interest if it doesn't affect my life.

I saw people in the hospital, the doctor said they were in a vegetative state.
I guess we know what they ate...

A friend of mine took a month-long trip to China in 2008. He is a... unique kind of person, and was hellbent on eating it. The only place he found "dog meat" was a place in the outskirts of Shanghai run by a Korean fellow. He took many pictures of the supposed "puppy stew", but when he showed them to a vet he found out he had eaten a large rat.

Yes they are eating them, and it's no different than eating bacon. In fact, pigs are smarter than both cats and dogs and have been compared, intelligence-wise, to 4 yo humans. In India, people don't eat cows and feel the exact same way about you.

From a Vietnamese family, my dad ate: dog, cat, lizard, snake, crickets. From what he says(my dad), eating a dog was no different from eating any other animal in his hometown(very bottom of Vietnam).
Of course I don't eat dogs or cats cause I was born American so I am not really into the Vietnamese traditional cuisine. Am I against it? Nope. Eating dogs and cats has been in existence for generations in Vietnam as far as I know.
Bonus: My dad describes eating a cat is very greasy.

People do eat dogs/cats, but are all of the society eating them? They aren't but this stereotype makes it seem as if they are.
The stereotype that people often eat dog or cat meat is a bit inaccurate. It's like saying that people in the US eat a lot of alligator meat or frog meat when they don't. People who eat dog or cat meat are usually poorer/in poverty, and you won't find anyone who eats dog/cat meat in cities unless you go to the slums or poor areas.
Also, you can be against eating dogs and cats, but that opinion is usually limited to people who are used to seeing dogs/cats as pets in the house (so developed countries and high income) and not street or bush animals running around. When you get disgusted and judge them for eating dogs/cats, you're using your own experiences and customs that may not apply to them.

Always found it funny people who were upset also were heavy meat eaters. Cow, chicken, pig, bird, fish, ox, and yet a dog and cat are off limits? Just because we domesticated them? Double standards!

I haven't seen cats on the menu, ever. But I have seen dog. It's not really a delicacy ... some people (not many) just like the meat. That said, given that the pet culture in China is growing -- ten years ago very, very few people owned pets, but it is increasingly common -- that are more people that are against the use of dogs in food.
Again, haven't ever personally seen cat on a menu, and I lived in China for a long time. But if everyone else is pulling up sources, I guess it happens, but pretty sure it's not common.

Cat meat it truly a delicacy in Vietnam, and it was quite popular about 10 years ago. But then the number of cats reduced alarmingly, and the press jumped in to make notice about the reduction, so cat meat consumption has been cut down significantly now, and only a very small group of people still eat cats.
Dog meat, on the other hand, doesn't go down much. It was so popular that the demand actually rises over time, despite the fact that more and more youngsters speak against it.

Interesting that cat's a thing in Vietnam. Didn't know that.
I've tried dog ... figured I should at least try it once. I assumed it must be great since some in China are so passionate about their right to eat dog. But I found it stringy and not particularly good. Give me beef or chicken any day. I just don't see why anyone would choose to eat an inferior meat.

Oh, was what you tried boiled meat? Boiled dog meat is meant to be stringy and chewy, and people actually want it chewy like that, especially when they eat dog meat (and beef or pork as well) together with liquor. Don't ask me why. I don't understand, either.
There is a different dish in Vietnam, stew dog meat or "rựa mận" (they cook it with dog blood, just a warning), which is very tender and rich.

I am Chinese. And yes dogs are in the menu for many cities still. Losing popularity however because more and more people are richer and start to own dogs as pet. As you may guessed it... If u have dog as pet u will be against eatting them.
Cat is diferent since they lack meat and taste bad. I never seen them sold any where. But bad people do go out and capture cats and serve them as beef or pork in road side BBQ.

that's not a Chinese problem... I think it's done worldwide... there are street vendors that sell chunks of meat very 'feline' in appearance. I can't tell you how many times a piece of chicken bought on the street or a backwater diner looked suspiciously 'pigeony'.

Not that pidgeons are that strange of a thing to eat, mind you.

yes, anything that walks, flies, crawls, swims...the Chinese people eat.
In the Chinese Cuisine, there are no wasted parts, every part can be made into a dish.
High Class people are also known to eat fetus...
it's actually asian exotic stuff/delicacy.

I am a Chinese. Most of Chinese NEVER eat dogs or cats, because dogs and cats are our friends.
But I can't deny that there are some people in Guangxi province of China who eat dogs as a tradition.
Why don't you take a trip to China with your friend? You can get the answer through your own eyes.

Scientific whaling is a joke. People may not like the idea of eating cats and dogs, but many whale species have low populations and are considered endangered and should be left alone.

the last time i ate dog and horse was 6-7 years ago. fun fact: i'm not Chinese :D
Now i don't found it as delicacy. I prefer to eat marine fish when i have to eat "meat".

As a South Korean-Canadian who cringes when I see internet comments like "korean savages eat dogs!" I thank you, SG community, for reacting to this thread the way that you did. I honestly expected to see more insulting comments in here but I was pleasantly surprised by all the mature and open minded comments. I, personally, do not eat dogs or cats because I'm just too attached to these domesticated animals and fact of the matter is that a lot of people in these countries that eat these animals feel the same way. To some people it's acceptable, to others it's not.
What needs to stop though is the illegal theft of pets for consumption. No body should ever be stealing someone else's animal for any reason. They should also be treating the animals more humanely but that's a problem that spans the entire meat industry =/.
