Perhaps once you've given away a game, and see all the gratitude - both real and bot'ed - and other things written there, you will understand why most gifters enjoy getting some kind of comment, rather than nothing.
Disclaimer: I have not gifted a game, but my girl has, and I got to see how even such little pointless comments and 'thanks' positively affected her mood.

Exactly. I appreciate all the comments I get, even if it's just "thanks", "ty" or whatever. It makes me feel like someone values my contribution, even if only 10% of people comment. It's sad that some people are so jaded and "above it all" that they hate people saying thanks. It irks me. I like to say something anyway, even if it's random and silly and not a technical thanks because I am thankful that I get a chance to win a game.

It is rather pointless, and almost spam-like even, but I just can't bring myself to scorn someone for showing gratitude.

I notice that only about 10% of the people comment at all on public giveaways.
I always try to say something.. ty, thanks or make a comment about the game Im entering for.
I am guilty of missing on occasion and have felt shit on the couple that I didn't say thanks and won.
But I always remember to thank the gifter after the fact through email or on their steam profile

You really don't need a reason to say thanks. It's just a little gesture to use to let the giveaway's creator know you appreciate their gift. Doesn't increase your chances to win or anything, it's just polite to say thanks when receiving something :)

Thanks... Even people who do it by spamming, aren't they better than people who don't say anything?

Because I'm thankful.
It's usually just "Thanks" but every letter is typed out by my manly-yet-tender fingers, as if they were making sweet love to the keyboard.

People who say that most of the thanks are just spam are either cynics or haven't actually given anything away. The fact that it takes some amount of time to type out anything at all lets the person giving the game away know that you appreciate it. Even the addon requires some amount of time and even though it's a lazy way to do it it still requires more effort than not doing anything. I have only given a few things away, but I find myself checking the comments constantly. I'd much rather have people post something than nothing even if it's only "ty"

Saying at least "Thanks", shows gratitude. A little extra effort in addition to pressing the "Enter to win!" button.
It's not a lot, but its something.

I rather show my appreiation towards the give away rather then saying nothing at all.
i atleast try to write a sweet thank you to every give away that i enter :)

saying thanks and showing your gratitude is not needed cuz all the games here were created with the secret valve superkeygen and inventory item creator. No one ever bought a game here. They "magically" appear and everyone who won a game really earned his win for doing the hard work of entering the giveaways.

What does that do? Everyone says thanks on every giveaway. I read somewhere they said it increases your chances of winning which I doubt. There's also a firefox plugin that automatically says thanks to every giveaway you enter.
