Is there any difference between a normal keyboard and a mechanical keyboard?

they are also more reliable.. and they are 20 times better than regular membrane keyboards honestly.. i have only had mine for like 2 weeks (i used them before in SC2 live tournaments) and i'm never going back.. it is SUCH a pleasure to type and play on..

There are mechanical keyboards which light up, and there are some which are quiet. There are some youtube videos which demonstrate the differences between each switch type.
Blue, black, red, brown, etc. All have different combinations of sound, travel distance, feedback and required finger pressure. If you spend enough on a great mechanical keyboard, it will last you longer than your PC case.
Ideally, you want to test them firsthand.

I'm using a Razer Deathstalker right now, and it's not bad. Keys light up, you can make custom macros, etc. No idea about the price, since I got it for free. If you're looking for a good keyboard, you're probably not going to find one for cheap, unfortunately.

I bought a Steelseries APEX, I regret it. Should have gotten a mechanical keyboard. I want a Corsair Vengeance K70.

If you have the money I suggest you get a mechanical keyboard, I use and recommend the Cooler Master CMStorm Trigger, but there are plenty of alternatives out there. The problem is that backlit mechanical keyboards are among the most expensive out there. If you give us an idea of your budget we can give better advice.

A mechanical keyboard is out of your price range then. You may want to look at the Logitech G105 - $65 or the Roccat Arvo - $74.

That is 41-82 USD, for people looking to suggest items within his budget. Prices are going to be different for him after retail import taxes, but price ratios should be similar across the board so this should still prove useful.

I agree, it's a good match to the OP's requirements. It seems to be out of stock in most of the shops I can find that ships to NZ, however. One sells for 92 NZD. They're really gouging New Zealanders, it's half the price for USA after currency conversion.
This keyboard is exactly what you're looking for, OP. Check ebay.
Or look through the options at PriceSpy. SG Army, if you recognize any of the keyboards in the list, sound off.
A reshipper might help improve your selection. Here's one. I have not used them, as I live in the USA.

Honestly? in these days? go mechanical - theres some for everyone both regarding looks/functions but also pricerange
Fx. the MEKA G-unit from Tt eSports (comes with and without backlight at about $20-30 difference)
i myself has the MEKA G1 because it was cheaper and i really didn't feel i needed the G keys
i'm a bit biased towards Tt eSport's products as i have a few, and love them.. but stuff like the Steelseries 7G is also worth looking at
all of the above are linear switches - the Cherry MX Black, which has the same "feel" as a membrane kinda - but much better, although its one of the switches that requires the most pressure to push down, but the Cherry MX Red switches are the same linear motion but with a softer spring inside, so its easier to press and your fingers wont get "fatigue" so to say
i would recommend if you are looking for something mechanical check out /r/mechanicalkeyboards as they have tons of advice and buying guides

if you are on a budget.. the MEKA should be fairly cheap (i think its available cheaper than this one on amazon) but it has its downside, no backlight and its very compact but again as mentioned above the MEKA G1 comes illuninated too for about $120 (and found in white on newegg for $75 without backlight)

Does anyone know what the buttons do at the very top of a Logitech G105?

At the top left? They're related to the macro feature. You have 3 macro profiles, and 6 macro buttons on the left. The macro profiles each have a set of 6 macros you can assign. So you can sit in Macro1 profile, and set the macro key 1 to do crouch+fire, and macro key 2 to do jump+duck, and also set Macro2 profile to set macro 1 key to cast bubble of protection + hearthstone, etc.. The MR button at the top is the 'macro record' button which you use to record the macro combinations you want. Personally I don't use the macro keys at all, I think they're stupid. I just bought it when it was on a big sale because I wanted the backlight.
Also, if you're looking at the G105, you can get the G105 Modern Warfare 3 edition for cheaper. I have no interest in MW3, but it's like $5 cheaper and the only difference is the keys are green instead of blue, and there's a sticker at the top that says Call of Duty MW3.

Does anyone know some good keyboards, a fair price, and the keys can light up?
