Looking for anime suggestions!

My recommendation is always Ranma 1/2 for the Best Comedy Ever Forever™. I suggest the Manga too. The Anime is really good and super funny, but the Manga somehow takes all that and makes it even better. ^_^

Also KonoSuba, another really good comedy.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is a very cute show with very cute and relatable characters. Oh, and it's funny too.

Date A Live also has a very... interesting premise. It kinda flip-flops between silly comedy and more serious stuff when the plot demands it.

Yes, I do prefer comedies over everything else. How'd you know?
I guess I should mention that all of these include some form of magic to some extend or another. I'm not quite sure how much would be too much for you and if any of these have it too much... Sorry if any of them do. ^_^'

Anime

I don't remember where all these came from... going mostly off memory and some of these I watched ages ago. so sorry if not on prime/netflix (tried to add link if i remembered). if not, many of these should be on crunchyroll.

• Ascendance of a Bookworm - story not complete but 2 seasons are done. This is the story of a girl that is reincarnated in fantasy/medieval themed world with her memories of her life from japan. she uses her knowledge from her old life to make people's lives better.. has magic but that takes a back seat to character development to the point where you can almost forget about it for most of season 1. it does become more prevalent over time though.
• Bleach - If you don't like longer shows, skip this entirely. If you do like longer shows, I highly recommend skipping everything listed as filler here ... Bleach is about a kid that gets super-powers and becomes a monster-fighting grim reaper.
• BNA - Brand New Animal. Humans that can change into anthropomorphic animals. Not quite were-animals. Not quite furries. Can change back and forth. Thought it had enough action/adventure to keep it interesting; takes place in modern-era but alternate reality or something.
• Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple - humorous martial arts adventure/comedy
• InuYasha - good older adventure series with japanese monsters etc. made by same lady that created Ranma series
• Little Witch Academia - very clean series, adventures of a girl who wants to learn magic. basically a female harry potter story.. magic is a big part of this one, if you didn't like harry potter, you may want to skip this. but i thought the characters themselves were well done so figured i'd mention it and let you make the call.
• My Hero Academia - modern anime. superheroes, coming of age.
• Noragami - japanese god mythology done as a modern day urban fantasy. was pretty darn good imo
• One Piece - another one to avoid if you don't like long shows or if you are only interested in completed series. One Piece is about guy that sets off to assemble a pirate crew and become the king of the pirates. It is currently up to 937 episodes and still going strong...
• Ranma 1/2 - older anime, another martial arts comedy. From same lady that made InuYasha. Moderately clean by japanese standards
• Re-Creators - I think of it as an anime sampler-platter. Had to say more without giving away some of the lot. There is some graphic violence. some of the plot explaination is very vague so you might call that "magic" but if that doesn't bother you, then probably not much else will.
• ReLIFE - clinical drug trial Rom-Com with an interesting twist
• ReZero - another reincarnated in a fantasy world but with a checkpoint / timeloop system. this does have magic but i don't think it is that central to the plot.
• Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove it - Rom-Com with more emphasis on the comedy than the romance. If you like Big Bang Theory, you will probably enjoy this.
• Slayers - another older fantasy/adventure RPG anime. This has magic and it is central to the plot but is also one of the better animes to come out prior to 2000s which you said you were looking for.
• That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime - newer fantasy/reincarnation RPG-type anime. This has magic but IMO is more about character development / progression.

I also second the above recommendations for Trigun, Stein's Gate, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Rising of the Shield Hero, Astra Lost in Space, Dr. Stone, and One Punch-Man

TV

If you like Sci-fi, then avoid The Expanse (is on Prime)... it is so fucking amazing it will ruin all other Sci-fi that is on tv. Not sure what age you are... it does have some very minor nudity (butt checks IIRC), violence, and language. That said it is nowhere near the level of violence / nudity / graphic scenes / etc as something like Game of Thrones.

Well, these are a little different from other recommendations, but you are already considering Aggretsuko - which is hilarious, at least it was for me -, so I have to mention Toradora and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Saiki has a 6-episodes follow-up series called Reawakened, which should be watched after you finished the original series.

You have mentioned "no magic", so Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood may not be your jam, but it is a very good series, with great character arcs and some serious gut-punching even in the first 10 episodes (which are resonating through the whole series). The original Full Metal Alchemist is skippable I think since it's very different from the original manga.

Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion are simply classics, just as Ghost in the Shell. GitS also has some continuation through Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and the recent Netflix series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2045, which has a very different animation style.

A few very good ones not yet mentioned.
Hellsing Ultimate if you're going to watch a vampire anime, this is the one.
Read or Die espionage, books and origami.
Pani Poni Dash - school girl anime for ppl who don't like school girl animes.
Now and Then, Here and There - Very serious stuff - definitely not for children.
Haibane Renmei unique and beautiful - also for grownups.
Wolf's Rain ‎Dark fantasy‎, ‎dystopian‎, ‎post-apocalyptic, great storytelling.

Akira - mandatory viewing imo
Big O - Batman with giant robots - it's an acquired taste.

I watch a lot of anime, and I think I have some recommendations that you will greatly enjoy. I do not think our tastes are necessarily the same, but I can't stand Dragon Ball, Pokemon, or Yu-Gi-Oh!, so we have at least that much in common. NOTE: The following list does not include any of the previous suggestions to which I have given a +1. So, stuff with no magic, no fanservice, and no "yell out the name of your move and take a ten-second wind-up" battles, correct? Try the following:

• Detective Conan (Case-Closed): A "Who-Dunnit" anime. Each "case" or "arc" is one (sometimes two or three) episodes, so I watch this when I want a change of pace and no cliff-hangers.
• Haikyo!!: An anime about volleyball. Yes, volleyball. I only started watching this anime due to the strong recommendation of others. It is one of the best anime series ever made, hands down.
• Angel Beats: This one is quite comedic, but the ending will make you cry. You will certainly never forget it. Watch it if you dare.
• High School Prodigies Have it Easy, Even in Another World: Modern reality versus fantasy setting. Only one season, thus far.
• Classroom of the Elite: Futuristic prep school for the best of the best.

Those are the titles I can come up with off the top of my head which fit your restrictions. I have plenty of other recommendations, of course (both Konosuba and Baka No Test are hilarious), but they may not meet your requirements. Currently, my main anime's are One Piece, Black Clover, and My Hero Academia.

The films you mentioned are both by Studio Ghibli, which has a fairly large catalogue of films in its distinctive style, so searching "Studio Ghibli" should help you discover other films that you will enjoy. They were both written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, so his other films would probably be the best place to start, e.g. Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and Ponyo.
I don't know what is on Netflix or Prime, so I'll just throw some anime TV ideas out. There will be manga for most anime because anime is often used as an advertisement for the associated manga in the way that western cartoons are used to advertise toys. Most broadcast services let you search for similar titles or titles that other fans of the show liked, so once you do that, you can usually find something worth watching.

• Inuyasha is a classic that is worth a look. There are magic/fantasy elements but I think they are well integrated and there is very solid character and relationship development throughout the story.
• Hunter x Hunter is interesting. It's another adventure story but the protagonist is a naively optimistic and determined 12 year old boy, and he can be quite inspirational. It starts like it is aimed at young children but incorporates darker themes (hitmen, gangsters, murder) as it progresses.
• Berserk is an absolute classic but it is gruesome, violent and contains some very dark subject matter - strictly for a mature audience (more popular with men than women). The manga is very highly regarded.
• Shokugeki No Soma (Food Wars) is like a love letter to cooking and eating. It manages to convey the almost orgasmic experience of a truly magnificent dish.
• Space Dandy is a light-hearted adventure series that has a decent English language dub (I normally prefer subtitles and the native language).
• Yuri on Ice is sports drama with an undercurrent of romance that I found surprisingly engaging, considering that I have no interest in figure skating or gay romance (this is not overt in the show, it is just a beautiful relationship that can be interpreted a number of ways).
• Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions is a romantic comedy about the odd phenomena of middle school syndrome in Japan, where youths so desperate not to be lost in the system develop delusions of special powers.

Hopefully there is something there that you will enjoy.

Steins;Gate - Sci-fi stuff. Less you know going in, better it is (although be warned it does start rather slow). Will blow your mind if you're into that kind of thing.
GTO - An older series, but an absolute gem. It's a drama with ton of comedy, and a couple of life lessons (Onizuka-way). The anime is great, but the manga is better imo. The anime's ending was pretty much just made up and improvised, probably because the manga was still ongoing at the time. My suggestion? Watch the anime, then read the manga starting from volume 13 chapter 106 (or even better, read the entire manga).
Violet Evergarden - The prettiest, most beautiful animation I've ever seen. Violet Evergarden is like if a great painting could speak, tell a story. The colours, the backgrounds, the animations, music, and even the story... it's just beautiful. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you feel it isn't, I still encourage watching it just to enjoy a great piece of art regardless of the story and characters (which personally I loved).

I haven't seen much being said about webtoons and/or mangas so far. As it stands, many animes are born in order of "webnovel/lightnovel -> manga adaptation -> anime adaptation", so if you finished watching anime, there's a chance that there's a manga of it, that's already far ahead in story progression. So I'll concentrate on webtoons.

Sci-fi/mechs. Borderline with your 'not into' I guess. But hard to say much without spoiling.

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Seisou-hen & Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen
I won't (generally) watch painstakingly long series with mostly filler episodes designed to prolong the show, but I did watch these two OVA and recall quite enjoying them.

Basically, he is similar to Sherlock Holmes, but because of a poison, he was transformed into a tiny child, so no one would listen to him every time he cracks a case.

Goblin Slayer
Dungeons and Dragons that doesn't shy away from bad endings of failed quests. Plenty of goblin killing, hoo boy, plenty of it.
There are around 5 or 6 manga based around different eras or party members in its universe.

I've only watched few anime, because even the most recommended usually were just okay or good too me.
