If you want to divide a cake equally among five kids but can only cut three times, how would you do it?

One sweeping horizontal cut to incapacitate the kids and keep the cake for yourself and then stab the cake for looking at you funny and commit suicide with the remaining cut because you decide you aren't hungry after all. As you crumple into the cake, the cake splits into 5 equal pieces.

My first thought: how do you stab five kids with only three strikes?!

We are going to need a bigger knife...and some very cooperative kids.

Why would you need a knife anyway? I still have my trusty frying pan and only god knows how many annoying little brats I can kill with that at once.

Oh come on. It's like a text based adventure game. There's only cake, five children and a knife with three charges, nobody said you have your pan on you or that you even have a corporeal form in this scenario. As far as the narration goes, the whole universe might amount only to those objects and infinite void ;p

Twice horizontally and once vertically. The sixth goes to the one who can defeat me in battle.

Stab one kid, cut horizontal and vertical. 3 cuts and one of the kids don't want cake now.

Stab one of the kids. Eat the cake yourself.

The kids won't stop you; you've still got two cuts left.

Cut 4 pieces of cake and then kill 1 of the kids.

Errr, since 360/5 = 72, then:

1) just cut the cake in half and keep the two halves together

2) cut straight through the center so that the angle between the first cut and the second cut is 72 degrees, you will then
have 2 pieces being 72 degrees each (angle in = angle out through the first line) and then two other pieces being 108 degrees each.

3) cut a straight line through the two 108 degree cakes giving the center a 72 degree angle, that makes 4 pieces of 72 degree cakes and the remaining two bits will be 36 degrees.

Then just give 4 kids the 72 degrees cakes and let the last kid have the two 36 degree bits (2*36=72) and that should do it :)

I'd throw it on the ground.

To hell with the cake. Those children don't deserve it.
