So, I want to do a Besiege giveaway here. It will be running for 4 weeks, so I will make it possible for you to join it.
here's how you can join:
here [Update 10] is simple rar archive containing text file. archive has a password. for a chance to get invited to this giveaway, you have to find a password. once you have it, just post a comment of the text file contents in a comment. DO NOT POST PASSWORD. first one who gets it right, will be invited to giveaway. after that password and content will be changed, and joining process will repeated until giveaway ends.

Good luck ;)

Mood music

Mood music 2

After each update file link will change

Suggestion: If you are using wordlists for cracking, sorting them helps significantly. Simple sorting took my dictionary attack from around 850p/s to 1200p/s

Special update: If all goes well for me in some stuff in real life, I'm gonna do GTA V giveaway in this style! Bit harder tho ;)

any advice for a good password recovery software for Windows? I'm trying with ARCHPR but it is slooooooooow (48p/s) with dictionary attack.

Can you give a few more hints? I just wasted 30 minutes to filter my dictionary(62m pw) and another 1.5hours to run it and still no hints.
I'm not baking my GPUs for a 7$ game even it's on my wishlist

there are things about it in first page > lowercase + numbers, no uppercase, no symbols, password 3 to 7 in length

ye I know. But mutations on numbers increases possible pw really fast(o>0, s>5, e>3, numbers at: start, end, both).

bruteforcing = 80b pw
numbers both start and end + dictionary wordlist + simple mutations = 22b pw
numbers at end + dictionary wordlist + simple letter >> number mutations = 86m pw
numbers at end + dictionary wordlist = 65m pw (what I've done)

Also that wordlist consist of ALL english dictionary + 3 public password list and still no dice. Your public password list must be really hidden

ok, letters/numbers aren't random, i'm using only legit words + maybe adding few numbers to it. and my wordlist ain't that big, only 14 million possibilies. list i'm using is available on public website, nothing hidden

Then I'm completely stumped. Is your wordlist in English, Latvian, or other?

english only

So the current password is a single, lowercase English word between 3-7 letters in length?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i used as password a word that's written on item i have in my room. i wouldn't say it's single word, in talking it would have space between 2 parts of it, most likely.

Ah, that's one possibility I hadn't accounted for. I'll keep after it. I hope all the questions aren't ruining the fun for you. :)

it makes it better, even in my password choosing part. probably this was bit too difficult. won't change though. first one was cracked in less than an hour while this is going for more than a day. it depends on a lot of factors as well

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

LMAO, this is harder than 1 word.

  • len(1-7) = 580k
  • Segmented 2 words:
    [len(5)] [len(2)] = 51.5M
    [len(2)] [len(5)] = 51.5M
    [len(4)] [len(3)] = 774M
    [len(3)] [len(4)] = 774M
    Add those all = 1.54B

Good luck to those who want to crack this password

Was just hoping for a new hint so that the sun doesn't burn out before we have a reasonable chance of stumbling on the next key. Seems it would have been much better to be here for test1.rar since the difficulty level is increasing.. If you're offline when a hint is given, all your cgpu cycles are wasted in the wrong direction while a person with the hint can solve it in under an hour. Maybe i'm just not cut out for this puzzle solving stuff :-)

one word, 6 letters + one number. i actually forgot what i set as password, but i'm not going to crack it myself. i know it was legit 6 letter word and one number.

P.S. test6 was posted more than 27 hours ago... around the time comment above my bamp was made

Have tried all ~ 28,200 six letter words playable in Scrabble with the 70 variations it takes to try each of the 10 digits in each position.. no joy :-) For good measure also took all 285,000 six character passwords from a list and ran them 70 times each; same result. So, i'm going to call uncle, unless you'd consider sharing which word list you're working from or something else to narrow down the possibilities.

Was still a fun exercise to learn about rar cracking on Linux. The shear combinatorial mathematics of it though, really make it impractical even at 10k attempts per second; unless the fate of the earth is at stake...;)

Thanks for the learning and fun.
Cheers.

P.S. Just went back and did Test5.rar.. nice and manageable once you have the clues you gave.

Checked all combinaions of 5 symbols (4 low letters and 1 number).
Checked nearly all combinations of 5 lower letter symbols plus 1 digit (digit is last).
Don't think I'll manage to check everything else.

On the bright side :) found a program which checks about 7500-8000 passwords/sec (using GPU) but demo is limited at 30 mins check.
Guess I'm missing something since I could crack the previous two passwords in less than 2 hours.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

who said it's 5 symbols?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I never said 5 symbols was the answer. I CHECKED all 5 symbols combinations (because it's more than 4 symbols, logically i started with 5, moved to 6). Right now the only option is a brute-force attack which takes forever.
I tried dictionary attack with putting a digit at 1-8 positions, replacing letters for a digit also at 1-8 positions. So far to no avail.
I'm not complaining just giving some feedback.

so? first wasn't an update obviously, so when it was test2 than it was update 1 not 2...

i already said that it's more than 4 chars and have one number. what else do you need? i won't tell exact length because that's too easy
