I look back at gaming in the late 90's and early 2000's and wonder was EA before this a company who released good games? The only one i can think of from then that really stood out was American Mcgee's Alice, If anyone remembers the good EA games please refresh are gaming memories.

EA's got its hate band since the nineties. You know, when they've started acquiring great studios, exploiting them in the worst possible way and bury them. We've lost so many because the way EA managed those studios: Origin Systems ( founded by Richard Garriot ), Maxis ( Will Wright ), Bullfrog ( Peter Molyneux ), Westwood ( Brett Sperry and Louis Castle ), Pandemic Studios ( known for its SW Battlefront, Full Spectrum Warrior and Mercenaries series ), Phenomic ( the most recent victim and known for its Spellforce series ). If things are not going well with Dragon Age 3, whatever remained of Bioware will join this list.

But before the acquisitions, before EA becoming the rampaging monster that is now, EA was the rock star. They have great games and they were decent publishers. Mid-nineties, everything change and it got worse with the passing of the years. Great companies closed, tons of great IP's misused or not used at all, the customer support became terrible, everything became about making money for shareholders and less about what customers might want. And when stuff doesn't work, EA always blames somebody: the pirates, the customers that don't understand their vision, anyone else is guilty for their failures, except them. So, the hate bandwagon remains. And EA heads for his third award: America's worst company was won by EA two years in the row. No other companies managed that so far. And it looks like EA might won that title this year, too. Which will make three years in a row...That's how bad is seen EA as we have this thread.

P.S.: The wiki list has a lot of games that were only published by EA, but they do not own or developed.

EA never had games of their own because EA is only a publisher. They did publish good games in the past (Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect) and I remember playing PlanetFall back in the days (of 5.25" floppy discs :D) as well. SO yeah they did publish good titles indeed...

EA had games on their own. EA Sports developed sports games since the eighties, Need for Speed was developed by EA from the beginning, the Desert/Jungle/Urban Strike series was always developed by EA. And let's not forget the Road Rash series. They were both developers and publishers since day one. But, true enough, most of the revenue always came from publishing. By now, if EA wants something, EA buys it and (mis)use that.

Was there a Planetfall besides the one from Infocom? I don't remember EA publishing that (at least on 5.25 floppies - don't know about later).

In he 80's and early 90's it was a respectable company with great games.

From personal experience:

  • Archon: The Light and the Dark
  • Pinball Construction Set
  • Boulder Dash
  • Music Construction Set
  • Bard's Tale
  • Racing Destruction Set
  • Marble Madness
  • Skate or Die!
  • Caveman Ughlympics
  • 688 Attack Sub
  • Populous
  • SimCity (the original 1989 one)
  • Syndicate (the original 1993 one)
  • The early Need for Speed games

They also published some great games from the developers they bought an then ran to the ground. (Origin, Westwood, Bullfrog,...)

The original SimCity was not EA.
Neither was SC2K.
That was my personal "turning point" for EA -- they became the "bad guy" for me when they purchased Maxis. I had hope for a while while Will Wright was still there, but now he's gone and you know the rest -- shame too, since without the money-grubbing, things would probably be fine, but EA is a business first and foremost. I don't fault them for that, but it doesn't garner back any of my favor either.

In all of my years upon the web and through the many forums and image boards I have ventured, you my friend are the first person I have seen mention this glorious game that raised me and allowed me to shoot people with robot dogs I merely assumed I was the only person who had played this game and that perhaps it may have been a fever dream.

Spore were an excellent game, I still remember spending hours upon hours playing it :)

And to those who hate their CS, it isn't that bad, I used my spore keys on an account I don't have access to any longer and they gave me keys for Spore and both expansions for free within a few days. (Danish CS, not sure how the english is tho..)

I see so many games mentioned here to praise EA...but they didn't develop them. You tend to forget that EA is mostly just a publisher. EA as publisher was always quite bad with their policies and so on. EA as developer was acceptable most of the time but far from good.

Yeah why the heck did Game devs need publishers in the first place...this turned this wretched world into having GAMES + GAMING + GAMERS ENDANGERED ... why? 21571256125136513753 DLCs out of wich 75-85 % are useless crap that MAKE THE GAMES EVEN MORE EASIER FOR AMATEURS ,CASUALS & DUMB#@%!% PEOPLE...(some arent even kids, heck most of them lolz) ...+ Prima Official Guides etc bla bla + more dumbin down for !@%$!@ CONSOLES ,lovely :) ( + consoles limit hardware's usage on game deving for PC,and always will, even if next gen consoles come out as they say so will next gen PCs... xD so..lovely...!@%@!%@! consoles & DLCs ruin everyhting i miss the good ol' Expansion Packs, good puzzles with no walktroughs/guides/DLCs,like Gothic1 etc, Divinity Anthology etc :) )
I started gaming with nitendo,ps 1,2,&pc & later & rarely xbox/gamecube etc but i hate consoles nowadays because of that.

  • OUTRAGEOUS !#%#!%#! game devs make games only for consoles ( Dragon's Dogma :(( , Infamous,Uncharted,The Darkness 1,et cetera xD )
But you can read that more on my 2 big posts in the topic where someone made a suggestion to not make GTA 5 for PC lol...(well ,someone linked to that site xD with polls)
Some companies like EA GAmes ,Ubisoft's UPLAY (Ubisoft falls in the steps of EA Gaymz as we speak) & GFWL have long-since forsaken themselves as passionate gamers & became corporate !%!#%s ...sad..Ripley's believe it or not :D

the reason is simple rectangular and if your american green, money money money and more money, self publishing costs money, refraining from caning the fans of a game with DLC loses potential profit both very bad when your a corporation such as EA/Activision etc, were they human theyd be as evil as satan himself but to be fair to them their good corporations in the sense of they make millions if not billions in profit and im guilty of helping though less and less as years go by and they make little i like and i end up going for less mainstream titles

Battlefield Vietnam(best soundtrack ever ^^), BF1942+Packs and BF2+Packs. Meadl of Honor AA, PA, Simcity 5000, NFS Underground2...

I don't have a gaming pc(not even close) neither a recent console(What I have now is an old PS2) so I don't know and pretty much don't care about recent releases because I'll only have the chance to play then in a future where now-a-days gaming pc becomes cheap...

Yes but like most people say, EA doesnt MAKE games, they just publish. I'd say after around 2004/2005, they quit being cool and started cashwhoring out little by little

There is a huge lot of awesome games released by EA in the past and that hasn´t changed in the present.. what EA is hated for is its treatment of the customers and the tendency to constantly drive great developers and gaming-franchises into the wall with sheer greed. All love for the money, no love for gaming or the gamers.

blizzard didnt need activisions help to monetise their IP, they created notable popular culture with WOW and its now known as world of warcrack without reason and this was long before being consumed by the actibeast, otoh the mount crap iirc was after blizzard was part of activision i dont play wow but id wager rift which i do play is pretty much a wow clone, one that doesnt require a sub which is why my poor ass plays it a few hours a day :)
