I see this turning out to be like Groupees with a bunch of whatever games and at $12 for 5 (sometimes less, sometimes more) it's not worth it in my opinion.

Also on the groupees comparison. I still ask wheter it was their introduction of „reserves” what did lead them to hitting the bottom of stuff quality wise which they tend to throw out nowadays. I sincerely hope humble can avoid the downdrift quality wise. Their pricing suggest they atleast try to but can they succeed?

I'm tempted but I'd be more tempted if they made promises of previous bundled games not being there. (or bundled from other sites)
For all we know half the games included could be bundled, and it might only have 1 game worth it/making it break even each time.

Thinking about subbing for the first month, because they will probably(if they aren't stupid) have a great selection the first month, so more people are tempted to stay subscribed to it for next time.

That only means that they will include non-bundled games, not that all of the games will be ones never bundled. That could mean 1 unbundled and 4 repeats a month.

This.

No, that could mean that, and I think Humble knows not to throw repeats the first month, so my assumption would be the opposite of yours, but I guess I came a little too strong on my last comment, apologies.

You're probably correct here. I bet November and December, maybe even January will be "new" games. But February will hit when there's typically a drought of new games and we'll see one duplicate creep in as a "this month, one of the most popular games from HB history that you probably missed!", maybe as the sixth in a normal bundle of five. That's the thin end of the wedge. :-)

Permalink

I bet there will be at least one "classic" every month, unless they want to throw garbage Greenlight games in there to fulfill the "never been bundled" aspect.

This. Exactly what I've been saying in my other comments.

What is written does not mean what people are interpreting it to mean. It means there will be "a" new game in the bundle, not "a bundle of new games".

The FoMO is strong here. I really wanna do it, concern of repeat games is strong though. I know they say never been bundled, but that may only be in regards to HB themselves. Probably a quarter of my library is from Bundlestars.

I haven't actually purchased a bundle since August 19th. I'm not really feeling the need to subscribe to a service for the convenience of getting bundle games before they're re-bundled in another couple of weeks.

$12 for 5 games... Meh, i'll pass... Since i'm more a collector than a gamer, i'll wait for better deals :->

Also not to mention that they wont be always on steam o.O ... That's definitely a NO!!

I'll try it for a month.. You would think they'd put their best foot forward, so the first few months ought to be solid. Though $12 is pretty steep for an anything indie...

I really hate blind pre-orders, and pre-ordering in general, it's too easy to get burned. Groupees gives a bunch of hints, and in some cases reveals the entire pack of games before the presale price ends. With this subscription there's no opportunity to decline, and people will be very upset when the bundle fails to deliver the proper value. I get that you're looking at the success of Patreon and want a similar "set it and forget it" payment model, but HB has already lost all credibility as a high quality bundle site. I have no confidence that the HB blind bundles will ever deliver the proper $12 value, especially with the waning supply of good unbundled indie/low cost games which want a promo, and the growing number of people with backlogs which would take years to consume.

I have no intentions of getting it given the track record of many of their bundles.

But I will be pissed if it ends up being an IDSoftware or Final Fantasy bundle I miss out on.

to me there are 4 things great about humble bundles:

  1. great games
  2. brings games to mac and linux
  3. pay what you want
  4. give as much of what you pay to charity as you want

the monthly bundle only has 1 out of 4, so not that great for me. also i already have legend of grimrock 2, don't like subscriptions, and figure i'll already have a lot of the games. i'll still pay attention to what they throw in there and will maybe discover some games i'd like to play, but i won't be subscribing.

Permalink

We don't even know if it actually has that 1 out of the 4 either. Sure you get Grimrock but as for the rest who knows? Not to mention that saying to companies that we'll buy anything they put out regardless only leads to abuse in the long run.

Just look at Lootcrate for example. For every good box they do... they do 5-10 ones filled with garbage. Yet people still stay subscribed due to a mix of laziness and misplaced hope.

I doubt that HB will be as bad as that but it's still a horrible business model. Completely agree with you.

If games don't go on SG bundled list I'm definitely getting the first one, also because FoMO is really strong here. The bundle will have to be mind blowingly amazing for me to subscribe for another month.

I reckon I'll subscribe til January and see what it's like. Hopefully they'll be doing pretty good bundles for halloween, then thanksgiving, then christmas and then post christmas. If the february one drops off a bit I'll abandon it then (or if it never really gets going)

That's an excellent point. We're moving into the holiday season, so there is the desire for them to not only create marketing goodwill, but also delight us with holiday treats.

Not when you can get it for half the price during sales.

Yaaay...NOT. There are way to many issues with this.

You have no idea what's in that bundle until it's too late. You are basically paying $12 without knowing what you're paying for. There is no promise that there will be individual keys, when that's the case (since they are going to give DRM free as well). $12 is a bit too much to give away without knowing on what.

In the first 2-3 months this will be OK since they will try to get as many subscribers as possible but what then? What happens when they will run out of new unbundled games? What will happen when they will loose subscribers? I'm pretty sure they will start giving crapware in the regular bundles just to give the good stuff for subscribers.

So no. For me this is the end of HB. Not sure I like what's coming for all of us, not just subscribers.

Informations (or speculations?) from Epicbundle concerning the general line-up, maybe it's worth noting (?):

1 hot title - Less than one year old.
1 highly-acclaimed title - Between one to two years old.
1-2 hit indie games.
1-2 hidden gems from developers.

Permalink

All during sales:
1 hot title - Less than one year old. -> 10$
1 highly-acclaimed title - Between one to two years old. -> 7$
1-2 hit indie games. -> 4$
1-2 hidden gems from developers -> 2$
23 - 12 = Profit -> 11$ unless you can wait even longer for games to bundle or for AAA's to get older and buy them for 5$ each
Still 11$ profit might just be a 12$ loss if you don't like the games.
It's a gamble.

It's soooooo BULLSHIT. Pay in advance for things that I don't know what they'll be? 12 dollars a month for gamea that I potentially own already or that I might not want? FUCK YOU Humble Bundle? When did charity become this?

Comment has been collapsed.

It's another way to get your money. That's all it is.
If I'm gonna pay 12$ I'm gonna pay it during sales for 2 or 3 games I know I want.
Maybe if you've got lots of time on your hands and really want to discover new games, it might be interesting.

I'm gonna wait and see what's the first bundle like and depending on the contents will take further action

I think that might be a mistake. Think about their incentives: Humble needs the first bundle to show all of us how great the service is going to be. They're trying to get people on-board, and a lot of people will be doing what you suggest. Thus it's more important for them that the first one be good than that any of the later ones be good.

But that means the first month's bundle has the highest odds of being worth the money. That's the one you don't want to miss!

Lol but what if they are aware of this and make it absolutely awful and profit from what will no doubt be their highest number of subscribers and let its popularity drop as a result... I guess that would risk a lot of hatred towards them and their site as a whole!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, and it would instantly tank their new service. I don't think they'd set all this up just for a quick cash grab that would ruin their brand. $12 says they're not that dastardly. :)
