Update: Due to recent site changes it is no longer needed to perform extra steps to avoid winning the same game multiple times. However, many users still have multiple wins in their account, so the appendix below is still relevant.

If you win the same game multiple times and mark the wins as received, you are breaking the rule of this site and are very likely to get a suspension (and if you still continue to do it, get a permanent suspension). You will also be blocked from entering most SGTools-protected giveaways, so better avoid this unpleasant situation. Here's how:

1. Activate the first win, and (assuming success) mark as Received
2. Add a comment in the second win: "I won this game from another giveaway. Please request a new winner. Thanks!"
3. Important: Do not mark the second giveaway as Received or as Not Received. After requesting the giveaway creator to reroll, your part is done. Just forget about it, and of course do not re-gift the key to anyone else and do not activate it on another account. For all intent it's not yours to use and should be assigned a new winner. If the giveaway creator didn't respond in a timely manner you may also mark as Not Received, but leaving giveaway feedback untouched is acceptable too. More info here.
4. To reduce the chances of multiple wins in general, after winning, resync your account (this script can automate this after you mark as received), go over your entries to other giveaways of the game you just won and remove them manually.

Appendix A - How to fix multiple wins

If you previously won the same game multiple times and already marked the wins as received, it's too late to follow the process above. There are however things you can still do to fix the situation. Getting rid of multiple wins is not easy, as it requires some co-operation from at least one of the GA creators. It can be difficult to get co-operation if they're not active on this site any more, or if the they gave a large number of keys. Still, the following procedure is worth a shot:

  1. Buy a Steam gift of the game (the one you won twice).
  2. Contact the first GA creator and explain to him/her that you want to fix your multiple win, and that you'd like to offer them a gift copy of the game so that they can ask for a new winner (reroll). If the GA creator doesn't want to co-operate, try the same with the creator of the second GA. If neither want to co-operate, consider offering them some compensation for their trouble (e.g. a game from their wishlist).

Good luck! Ended

This script can do so much more than just automate syncing. It also syncs DLC. Ever since I am using this script, I never got any duplicate wins.

Looks good! Do you plan to also add an option to automatically remove entries in other giveaways of a game marked as received?

5 multi-wins within the same day? That's impressive. For some reason I doubt he will bother to clear those...

Yesterday I found someone even better at the multiple wins game. While it is DLC, it is still very impressive

That DLC is notorious. I don't know where they got so many copies from, but it is the third most common multi-win I see after Wrath of Anna and… uh… some other game.

A copy of that DLC was actually the first thing I gave away here. The reason why there are so many is because, when you buy it on Steam you get another 3 copies to give away.

Yirg, i have a problem with multiple wins:
i've won the same game 2 times in just a few hours, activated and received the first one, asked for a re-roll for the second one.
the problem on the 2nd giveaway is, that it was 2 copies for a group, 2 entries and 2 winners (one of them was me) - so no re-roll is possible.
deleting half of the GA is impossible, creator said only cg can handle this and he will hardly have time for something like that.

do you have any other ideas?

If CV is the concern of tge GA creator, send them back an extra key (not the one you won) and ask them to delete the GA and create another (assuming the other winner agrees). That's probably what I would try.

thank you for the answer. the only problem is that i always get displayed that i have 1 win, the one i cannot activate anymore as i own it already.
will try to ask him to delete the ga and do as you said, thanks

Alternatively ask the other GA creator to delete the win you already marked as received, and similarly make it worth their effforts.

I won the same game years ago when i was new to this and it was not even a game it was a beta at that time (dota 2) now its free so I cant buy a copy or anything. I marked both as recieved and gave the other copy a friend - like said i was new and not aware of this rule nor of the possibillity to reroll.

Whatever now every sgtool flags me for multiple wins of the same game -.-

wish I could fix this somehow..

Convince one of the GA creators to delete the GA. A small "bribe" may help make your case a more convincing one ;-)

One creator is inactive for years and the other ignores my message in his giveaway so what should I do?
And Im not the type to bribe people when I give games away than to make others happy. :3

Looks like I have to live with it.

But thanks for trying to help! :)

If they're active on Steam then there's still hope, but possibly not without some kind of bribe.

It's too bad this site doesn't offer a solution for this issue without requiring GA creator cooperation. It's not technically impossible.

What I usually do is after winning a game hiding it from my giveaways. Also when I enter a private giveaway/train I know that if the game is hidden it's for a reason.

You don't need to do that any more as you can't participate for giveaways that you have previously won.

This is interesting thread, however the suggestion to offer "some compensation for their trouble" if the giver doesn't want to cooperate I find a bit excessive.

(case of person who did it by the book) It is entirely, statistically possible to be the winner in more than one GA for the same game (not me, lucky people), so if you ask for a reroll you did all you could. And it wouldn't make sense to ask people to only enter one GA for every game.
(case of person who didn't do it by the book) Even if they didn't read the rules, humans make mistakes. I see most of the older members here saying "read the rules!!!" but they don't seem to get that, being a member of a community for a long time, you have time to acquaint yourself with rules and take part in discussions, and in the end gather knowledge that it would be impossible for a new member to get all at once. People tend to forget we are all newbies the first time around. So, I don't see the reason to present "bribing" as a solution; if the only thing keeping the giver from doing a reroll is the incentive of a "bribe" then, in my book, they are worse than the multiple winner.

And I'm saying this as a person with no bans whatsoever, a person who reads the rules to the best of my abilities and a strict judge of matters.

tl;dr "bribing" might be a viable resolution to get rid of a mistake, but what does it say about the person who accepts it?

I think you misunderstood the scenario in which the "bribe" would be needed. This isn't about the week after a giveaway is won, where the common practice (when noticing a double win) is to just ask the creator to reroll. This is about cases where a long time has passed and in some cases the creator is no longer active on SG. It would of course be nice of them to agree to a reroll (I definitely would), but they're not obligated to by site rules, and if they're not active they would have even less interest to bother logging in. In those cases a bit of an incentive can help make things happen.

"a bit of an incentive can help make things happen" is basically the definition of bribing.

People who require "an incentive" to do something that they can do for free (and it doesn't really inconvenience them) are a very clear and distinct type of people. I would respect a person saying "it's been over a year, I refuse to bother" more than a person who would ask for or expect "an incentive".

I'd bribe for a kidney transplant, but to grease the wheels on a dublicate win? That's ridiculous.

Well, good thing you don't have multiple wins then. Those who do have multiple wins depend on the good will of GA creators. If the winner doesn't consider multiple win to be a big issue they obviously won't jump through hoops to get rid of them. If they do care, and if the creator can't otherwise be bothered to help, then I can't think of another way to incentivize them. What would you suggest instead?

I would respect a person saying "it's been over a year, I refuse to bother" more than a person who would ask for or expect "an incentive".

I don't think there's any expectation that the creator would ask for it or even think about it. This is on the winner to come up with this or other creative solutions.

Whoever thinks they should jump through hoops for it, they should go on and do it. Personally I wouldn't, but that wasn't my original point.

My point was, what kind of person would one be, that they'd refuse to do it out of common courtesy, but "an incentive" would change their mind. My comment was focused on the GA creator, not whether the winner should send a bouquet.

Time is money and also if you haven't used the site for 3 years, yes it might be a bit inconvenience.
The alternative is that you messed up and no you suffer the consequence.

I volunteer regularly, so "time is money" is an aphorism that means little to me.

That might be something that means little to you, but to others someone breaking the rules and wanting you to fix it, might still be time better spent somewhere else.

Personally, if someone breaks the rules and expects me to fix it, either I do it (begrudgingly or happily, depends or the case), or refuse to do it. Bribing is not a factor.

Not for you, but someone that really wants to fix their past mistakes and if there is no other way, they might want to try it.
