Hi SG, a few changes to the site today related to games and contributor value. In the past, the site had three types of games:

  1. Full Value Games: Full contributor value when they were given away.
  2. Bundle Games: 15% contributor value when they were given away after a set date.
  3. Blocked Games: Not able to be given away.

The downside was we needed to block games and remove them from the giveaway list when they were briefly free, or posted in large giveaways outside of our community. We needed to do so to prevent users from obtaining a high number of keys for free, and giving them away for contributor value on SteamGifts. Unfortunately, this meant lots of great games were blocked and users could no longer send or receive them. Today's update allows users to start creating giveaways for these games once again, but simply for no contributor value. However, please be patient as we work through the 1,000+ games that were previously blocked, and add them back to the giveaway list when appropriate. We now have four types of games available:

  1. Full Value Games: Full contributor value when they are given away.
  2. Reduced Value Games: 15% contributor value when they are given away after a set date.
  3. No Value Games: No contributor value when they are given away after a set date.
  4. Free Games: Not able to be given away, because they are currently free.

For assistance, when you're creating a giveaway, the game list will show * next to games that are Reduced Value Games, and ** next to games that are No Value Games. Keep in mind, these icons are just for reference, and similar to before, the value of a giveaway can change if we need to make retroactive changes.

This is awesome news. As someone already said, even no value games have value to someone :)

It's a lovely idea, but indeed it should be paid attention to (or give the means to control) how it will mess around with stats often used by groups ; sent-won and group stats

Under what conditions can a no value game come back to the list of reduced value games? I hope for fair chances because some might just be a one time event.

no value game will never be brought back to reduced value list - because if it were people will just keep hoarding the key until it will give them CV again. With new system you can freely make GA for this game, if your only motivation for making GA of free game would be gaining CV you better off not making GA at all.

Do free games count towards the overall giveawsy number? Some might fake their profiles with free stuff :c
I payed for all of my GA... just sayin

What this means is we will now have tons of crappy free games GA on Gleam and Marvelous which will soon flood every page. Sigh.

and what prevents you from hiding these games? So people like you whoi don't want to see them do not have to, while others who missed promo will still have a chance on getting games they missed. win-win situation.

Well, that's a change but what if the key doesnt work? Many keys coming from mass-giveaways are invalid and keys have a limited lifetime.

When you create a giveaway here with this kind of key, you can't be sure it will works. What next? Account suspended? Have to buy the crappy game? Possibility to delete giveaway?

You get a not received if winner is an ***hole that doesnt agree to remove the ga.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

if winner agrees to delete GA you get GA deleted and lose slot, otherwise you either suck up "not received" or buy the crappy game. In the end as with any key - you are responsible for what yopu are giving away. Same way if you bought a key from let's say G2A and it ended up duplicate - it's your responsibility not SG.

That's the problem here. If i have some old keys left from these mass-GA, i'll certainly not give them away here if the same rules apply in case of problem, specially for 0 CV game.
What I wanted to point out is not my personnal case but the fact this new giveaway category will certainly come with more problems for support to resolve.
Wait and see...

on the other hand if you have these keys from legit source you will now be able to give them away, while previously you could not. I have like 6 or 7 humble Bundle purchased keys that I could not give away. I bought a bundles with them because I wanted other games and these leftovers were just sitting there useless (not a fan of dropping keys, because they will end up with ninjabots most likely, njot with fair users), now I can freely give these games away, and they are often not some shovelware trash but actually good games (Superhot, SpeedRunners, Divide by Sheep, Tumblestone etc).

-1 bad bad idea.

I think there is a positive side to it, as we can see giveaways for games like SUPERHOT and Euro Truck Simulator 2 again. Folks will be less motivated to do so with no CV reward, but at least it's an option, and many of the most prolific givers and people using giveaways for promotions (as in YouTube reviewers promoting their channel) are more concerned with giving away games people want than with CV. What do you feel would be bad about this? Perhaps cg can modify the approach to avoid your concern.

Permalink

Yes we will see some giveaways for SUPERHOT which is nice but that will be 0.01% of giveaways under this new system. While 99.99% will be total crap which will flood this site so badly i dont even want to imagine that. I'm also pretty sure that support will have to deal with increased amount of tickets made by people asking why are they not receiving CV for free games ( unless they that info will be somehow stated so clearly that even a wood log would understand that ) . People will get inflated ratios with free showelware as well. I dont really see a point of this , if you have keys for a free games and you want to give them away, just make a forum thread with some bot protection. Quite simple and elegant solution.

I can see your point, though I don't think support will be hit too hard with questions about lack of CV. Personally, I would like to see a CV estimate during giveaway creation. When you select a game, I'd like to see text describing the giveaway class with the background highlighted in pastel green (full value), blue (reduced value) or gray / pink (zero value), which would explain what the giveaway values mean. It would only take up a small amount of screen real estate, and be right there when you're creating the giveaway. If someone would be angry that they're only getting 15% value (as seen in a recent discussion thread) let alone zero CV, it would be right there, in a contrasting color, before they commit to giving a game away.

As to ratios, many people have suggested zero CV games not count toward sent/won ratios. Another option would be to have separate sent/won ratio values that factor in free games or not, and groups can choose the value used from what's available, just as they can look at group difference or CV-based ratio. With additional stats, you could even have groups dedicated to formerly-free giveaways, just as there's a bundle game givers group.

As to the point, it's that people benefit from being able to use the systems built into Steamgifts rather than ad hoc bot protection: sgtools, whitelists/blacklists, group giveaways, etc. While trash will outnumber the good games, that's always the case (Sturgeon's Law). If you're hiding unwanted games as you go along, you'll have knocked the majority of them out as reduced value games when they're given away in bundles from IndieGala, Cubic, Groupees, etc., long before a game's given away as free.

I certainly wouldn't object to users having an option in settings to hide zero CV games, even one that's on by default, just as we have a checkbox to hide/show already-owned games and DLC for games we don't have in our libraries. I think there's at least as much desire to be able to toggle zero CV games as those two categories.

finallly. I would just add one change - no value GAs should not only not give any CV but don't give GA slots as well. This way noone can use them to farm anything and only reason people will use them is to share.

I totally agree with you. And these GAs should not be taken into account for the Sent counter, or it will be an incentive to farm them for abusers.

also valid point - so no CV, no GA slots, not adding to Sent counter (maybe also not adding to Won counter - so they do not screw with ratio numbers for example in ratio groups or SGT ratio checks). Make them available but not included into any stats - this way only people who genuinely want to give these games for free will do so (or people who don't read FAQ/guidelines ;p) and not people who wish to boost any SG stats.

But what does "slot farming" gain you?
Anybody can ask support for more slots already.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

and support can refuse, if I make fake GAs, lost all slots, first time probably support will grant me them (I didn't know how the site works), but if I use these new slots to make more fake GAs and ask support again they will say no. but here? I can make fake/troll GAs over and over again regaining my slots for free. limited number of slots is a prevention system from creating endless stream of fake GAs (max new/fake account can make is 3 copies). If you allow to gain slots for free the prevention becomes meaningless.

I can make fake/troll GAs over and over

no, you get suspended

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

only if I get reported, in most cases I don't just end up with "Not Received" ;) so "suspension" prevention is based on report ticket system - which as we know can mean going on for months without suspension cause noone reports you, while GA slots system is automatic and will shut you down right after 3 GAs. And you wish to replace this better automatic system because "well, we still have this other protection, much more flawed, where you can go for months, but it's there"?

There is no gain in such trolling for the user and we have some very attentive observes for high value GTA5 GAs. So yeah I don't see it as a problem.

there is no gain in any trolling, yet people do troll with no gain. And I don't see why you see free GAs not giving GA slots as a problem.

Glad to see this change cause the number of people creating giveaways for the wrong game has been growing a lot.

I would like to suggest one addition; the two stars behind the name are easy to miss, it would be great if a yellow notification box like on the Giveaways Won page appears once a No Value Game has been selected to explain it's not worth any CV.

Hopefully this will stop people from hoarding keys from mass giveaways. Small chance, I know, but every little bit helps.

Although it is a shame some of the games on that list can't be given away, I don't think it is such a good idea to open the floodgates to all the hoarders of free keys out there. Specially if they are put on the general GA list.

That's a good news, I myself missed a few mass-giveaways for games I was interested in in the past and then trying to win those games was no longer an option.
At the same time, I can now get rid of some of my previously free keys that some people might still want. It's a win-win! :)

It would probably be best if it only concerend games that were only free for a short while and then never again though.

Do you plan to address the cv abuse issue which has been ongoing for more than year now? https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/TXz4h/

it's not CV abuse. it's within the 95% threshold stated in the sites faq.

It actually is cv abuse. TLDR of the thread is to put HB monthly games in bundle list because of abuse, which I explained to the details in the thread for the people who don't understand, not because they come from something that's called bundle.

If you consider giving away Humble Monthly games CV abuse how come so many of your wins are from Humble Monthlies ?
I only briefly looked at the first 2 pages of your wins and 5+ are Humble Monthly games. Wouldn't it make more sense to boycott those giveaways and not participate ?

Yes, I agree, me winning 5 out of 50 giveaways for those games for over more than half year period is totally the problem. Don't bother yourself by reading thread and understanding it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I have briefly read the thread back then and if I get what your saying correctly you don't have problem with Humble Monthly games in general but with those Humble Monthly games like Space Run Galaxy that barely have any demand and thus get sold on G2A for pennies...

But if that is your actual problem you're doing a terrible job at conveying it.

I can partly see your point but what you fail to see is that Support needs Guidelines to base their decisions on and the rule for Bundle status is that G2A and other grey market prices are not taken into consideration when it comes to determining Bundle status.
