Happy holidays, everyone, and happy cake day to this thread! I took over the reins one year ago today, and it’s been nothing but fun. Thank you, all of you, for making this journey worthwhile. You guys are amazing.
I love statistics, so here are some numbers for you. Since the creation of this thread, Epic Games Store has given out a total of 96 items, of which
Only 75 new games, but there were some bangers along the way, like
Here’s to another year of great games. Cheers.

Thanks for continuing the thread with updates, I really appreciate it. I dare say there have been a few times where I've forgotten to claim games at the start of the giveaway period when I've seen this post pop up with a day to spare 😅. And for all the hate Epic receives, will the haters please direct me to anywhere else where they've given away "only" 75 games full in the past year 😁, I'd really like to know 😛.

I wonder how many non bundled or 'free games' like from Amazon prime/GoG take away from the 75. It feels like I got 40 new games or something. But free is free. Unlike another thread on here you do a superb job on the upkeep. I've said it already but props :)

Ghostwire has was just in Prime games and humble recently. Hopefully we get some better quality non repeat / recently bundles given away games. Last year like 3 I was interested in. Still some time..

Personally, I have bought quite a few games from them. No problems. Also, the ''Earn 10% Back'' makes it even cheaper. I am currently playing Worldless. Plus, I just got The Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story and CONVERGENCE: A League of Legends Story. It's up to you. I like a good deal regardless of platform.
Comment has been collapsed.
For me, it doesn't really matter where i buy the game from, cause what i after is just that i "own" the game and not stealing it, is epic trash? Idk, but it is lacking a lot compare to steam, but not that big of a deal for me, the coupon however. And if i want to see community things like guide, review, or discussion i can just use steam even tho the game is on epic, like is that a problem?, im not allergic to epic, but if profile and community things really concern you, maybe just use steam
Comment has been collapsed.
Is it a bad idea to purchase games from Epic?
Depends on the person, IMO. If you are really fond of the Steam ecosystem (cheevos, trading cards, showing friends your activity/game progress, etc), then you might eventually regret buying games from Epic.
I guess there's also the chance that in the future Epic could decide that the storefront is no longer profitable enough, and ditch everything but Fortnite or whatever, which could put your games in jeopardy. I doubt that would happen, but you never know. Of course the same could happen with Steam, but it's such a massive platform, I just don't see that taking place. Gabe Newell has stated before that if something like that did ever happen to Steam, we'd be able to keep our games, but it's worth realizing that he won't be in charge forever.
Lastly, many people think the Epic launcher itself is garbage (and it definitely is by comparison), but that doesn't really matter once you've launched a game.
Comment has been collapsed.
If the price is right for you, buy it. With the coupon and cash back thing, it makes a lot of stuff cheaper than the competition. Maybe the client and store could use improvement but as long as the prices are competitive and games download and run fine, which they do for me, I can easily live with that.
Comment has been collapsed.
Depends on the price difference and if you care about having achievements or not. Take Tony Hawk for example, the Epic version no longer has working online multiplayer and doesn't have achievements, while the steam version does. I'd say only buy on epic if it's an exclusive that you want to play immediately or if there's a big difference in price. If you're only saving like $5, then nah just get it on steam.. Steam will likely have a more updated/better version of the game and even if epics version of the game remains up to date without lacking features.. who knows if the epic client will remain supported in the long term.
Comment has been collapsed.
who knows if the epic client will remain supported in the long term.
Just a friendly reminder that Epic is older than me (and I'm not a kid anymore, sadly), Unreal Engine is older than a lot of people in here and tons of games are based on that, plus Fortnite is still a money printer
Steam is private company and when Gaben will die, well, I doubt someone leaked his testament, so who knows what will happen
If I had to bet, I'd stick with "both those companies will survive us" but saying that the epic client could be deprecated while steam will go strong forever is based on the fairytale "steam good, epic baaad"
Comment has been collapsed.
Steam is the most successful client on PC. Not saying it'll go on forever but it has the highest chance of outlasting every other client even if Gabe dies. I know Unreal Engine has lasted for a long time and Epic will likely stay in business for as long as I'm alive.. but that doesn't mean they have to support the client. If Fortnite ever gets shut down, I don't see a reason for Epic to keep the client running.
I'd judge the Epic client based on how little effort they've put into it rather than Epic being successful as a whole. If they're barely supporting the client now with lack of features, after it's been a few years.. then it makes sense to assume they'll end support for it when they realize they can't put anymore money into it. Right now they don't seem to care much about the client itself and they're relying on exclusives and giveaways.
Everyone is free to spend their money on what they want, but I'm just saying.. be careful. Remember Stadia? That failed and was shut down.. and Google created that lol. Luckily people were compensated
Comment has been collapsed.
Google is not a gaming company, Epic is, and they are still investing in their client with another round of daily free games, facts go against your theories.
"If Fortnite ever gets shut down, I don't see a reason for Epic to keep the client running" is like saying "If google ads gets shut down, I don't see a reason for google to keep google search running" yeah... okay I guess
Also I don't really get why their client is so bad, as far as I know it downloads and runs games just fine, that's what most people care about
Comment has been collapsed.
Tony Hawk not having multiplayer is not related to Epic the game does not even use the epic online SDK as far as I know.. It is also not the only version of the game that is not able to connect online (Playstation) so blame the devs.
Epic gives devs ample freedom to implement the multiplayer they want as longs as it is crossplay between all pc platforms.
As Epic is growing its library I see more and more people around me buying there as do I. The latest holiday sale has some really good deals (the 33% coupon makes a BIG difference but that one you dont see reflected on isthereanydeal for some reason..).
I still remember Steam being bashed as crazy by the gaming community when they introduced it and it sure took a really long time before they became what they are now with plenty of issues along the way..
As for guarantees you have none on steam or EPIC so if you want that buy GOG only.

definitely worth using code editors - like Sublime, Notepad++, VS Code etc
I don't know your skills in programming nor your data format. For regularly changing thread I'd make some script and have data in some file like JSON, then it would be only matter of adding new data (game name and link, start and end times)

While I fully agree that given the option I'd rather get these freebies on Steam I won't complain about having to deal with Epic as long as I don't have to pay a cent, free is free. I won't say no to eventually buying it for Steam too if it gets really cheap at one point, although owning a copy of it anywhere will make me think about it very hard and potentially prioritizing another game.

You should play it, if that's what we get. Played it on PS5 last year, and it's great. A little samey/tedious after a while, so it's better to play it in chunks. Beautiful looking game with an incredible soundtrack.

but not DNF Duel. this one doesn't support the crossplatform yet
Don't you have anything better to do than spewing out lies? IT'S LITERALLY IN THE TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewiO6T5ncUc
Like what are you trying to achieve except for making a fool of yourself?
Comment has been collapsed.
The lack of crossplay in DNF Duel has been criticized at launch – crossplay can be a massive countermeasure against a dwindling player population, as it at least keeps things active enough for hardcore players.
It looks like anyone playing on Steam may have to migrate over to EGS for this one, since the game being free should generate at least a short term boost of player numbers over there.

according to this article the game doesn't have crossplay and the trailer is wrong

Hmm, who would be more trustable: Some random writer who's the only one making the claim, or the official trailer and the whole community who seems to confirm said trailer? Hmm tough choice /s

The fact remains anyway that having games on Steam is always better than having them on Epic. on Steam they sometimes get updated more often and are better versions. also sometimes online multiplayer doesn't even work in the Epic versions unlike Steam. Epic will never be a community like steam and its features will never be like steam
Comment has been collapsed.
The fact remains that my IQ goes down everytime I see your post here. They are either complaining about no achievements, no "professional reviews", or in general that everything in Steam is better and shitting on Epic. Newest trend is inserting "groupbuy" in every post in bundle threads. "Steam version has workshop and Epic does not". You won't even play the game, let alone use workshop or Steam Remote play or other stuff. Yes we know that Steam is much better with lots of features, you don't have to be broken record.
Why would you care about "community" and "features" since you aren't playing games at all. You are giving false informations and opinions on games you read somewhere because you don't have your own and will never have. Like whining that The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition is much worse than original since you have seen that 'mixed' tag on Steam, but not actually reading why it is like that and that problems and performance issues the game had had been fixed.

I firmly believe that this guy has mental issues. More than one year complaining about free games. Also he redeems the games, but it doesn't play them because "Steam is better than Epic, it has achievements" but he rarely get achievements in his Steam account.

A man can't criticize because he wants quality games does not matter if they're free or not, and a reminder these games are only free for one day and you retarded monkeys act like they're gone be free forever this is why you idiots will keep getting worse free games then quality and I'm not sorry but Destiny 2 had a horrible launch and horrible dlc that made any remaining players leave the game entirely and a fighting game how many have you given away Epic 20? 30? And let's be honest, nobody cares about fighting games and no super smash bros is not included you fucks are like cockroaches, you take anything no matter how horrible of a taste it has entertainment is dead, good job fagboys..

Their incoherent ramblings and especially the insults they throw around like free candy absolutely do have a bearing on why I think it's ok to make fun of them. If you feel personally attacked by that, eventhough you weren't adressed in any way, and feel the need to defend some random game against being used as the butt of a mediocre joke, so much so that you even immediately blacklisted me, you are free to do that. I hope it helps you find peace of mind. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Comment has been collapsed.
Have to comment this since it was written while I was writing my last post.
You do realize that they used a homophobic slur in their original comment to which I reacted with my joke, right? And that, since they were apparently rambling AGAINST Epic right underneath your rather pro-Epic comment, they probably even included you in who they were addressing with their slurs?
They might even have replied to the wrong comment in the first place and may have reacted directly to yours, since they are taking the same line as bambi and so it doesn't make sense as a direct reply to bambi.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ok so I've read the kid's tantrum now and yeah, it was a direct reply to bambi, which only goes to prove even further that they're an idiot. They start by seemingly replying to the wrong person AND make no sense for most of their outburst, then they include a bunch of slurs (and not just homophobic ones) and try to claim fighting games are dead...they're obviously 12 or 13 at the oldest.
I still stand by my initial point that making fun of someone for the games they play is weak - especially when they've just given you so much more to make fun of them for - and that going outside of the argument to find shit to make fun of them for is weak, though.
Oh and I never said that you were throwing a tantrum while the kid was arguing, I simply meant that the entire interaction between BOTH of you was an argument - you were arguing with each other, you were having an argument - and that doing the equivalent of a Facebook profile dive for ammunition is akin to throwing a tantrum because you're losing the argument. And again, "argument" meaning the interaction between you both.
Comment has been collapsed.
Like I said: it could have been any game they played last. Didn't really look at what it was, didn't care, didn't matter. The joke was only ever aimed at the "quality games" statement, which in and of itself is intrinsically subjective.
I didn't make fun of what they were playing, I didn't go outside of the "argument". I made fun of them for hilariously trying and failing to mask their incoherent ramblings and subjective opinion as valid criticism of the quality of some games while throwing around insults like the immature kid they probably are.
And there really was no argument. There was their rambling comment and slurs and my joke. That's it. Not more of an interaction than driving by a trash bin and dumping an empty can at full speed. And I tried to get you to see that about 2 hours ago. Context matters!
So now please let's stop wasting both of our time over this for any longer, agreed?
Comment has been collapsed.
I just find it hilarious that you think ANY game is worth crapping on someone over. You're as bad as those idiots on Facebook who go profile diving to find something to use against whoever they're arguing with. It's a clear sing you've lost an argument and are now throwing a tantrum.
BTW me blacklisting you had nothing to do with you making fun of someone. I guess it's time for you to throw another tantrum because of that?
Comment has been collapsed.
So my joke is a "tantrum" but their insults and ramblings are an "argument"? You're also hilarious! ^^
And yes: I probably would have made the same joke if the last game they played had been Call of Duty or whatever else. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Now let's end this right here. Nothing of value will come from it. Feel free to have the last word, if you feel the urge to "win" this "argument".
Comment has been collapsed.
Okay, I have no horse in the race but have to butt in here. WaxWorm clearly only used that game to prove that despite them raging that "quality" games are not being given for free, they have over 200 hours in something that could be considered a pretty basic game. Yet they enjoyed it nonetheless if they have that many hours in it.
So this wasn't really an ad hominem attack as you're thinking it as.
Also the slurs used by them kind of did deserve a comeback, no matter how petty.
Comment has been collapsed.
Firstly, it's not exactly a 'basic' game by any real stretch (and no I'm not tRiGgErEd or whatever, I just think making fun of someone for the games they play is weak) and the devs still put in a fair bit of work adding new characters, new events etc.
Secondly, where did I say it was an ad hominem attack? I simply asked if there was a reason to make fun of the games the kid plays. I stand by that even more now that I've actually properly read the kid's tantrum rather than skimming it. There's so much more there to make fun of them for!
Comment has been collapsed.
That is what an ad hominem attack is, you didn't need to say it was one.
Yes, there's a lot more to make fun of, but give it a rest, we heard you the first ten times you mentioned it. Clearly you're sore that your favourite game got a chuckle, stop taking that so seriously and be more offended at the fact that the person was calling people homophobic slurs instead.

They did, when the storefront was younger so they needed to get the goodwill of customers. After it sufficiently grew and the people who hated Steam, due to it's DRM and games becoming Steam exclusive, got drowned out by the people who liked Steam due to the hefty sale discounts and the free games occasionally givenaway its future got secure an they don't do it anymore.
Basically they did what Epic is currently trying to do except they didn't need to buy out game exclusivity since they where on of the first (if not the first) to introduce DRM which other companies really loved to make use of. And a good reminder why we need competition to digital storefronts. Sadly attempts for competition has been half-assed. Epic currently does the best job at trying to compete with Steam, but except for hefty discounts and free games (which will eventually go away like they did on Steam) a lot of QOL features weren't present (or are still missing).
Comment has been collapsed.
They should really focus on updating their client with QOL features as you say as it looks very limited in features and missing a lot of stuff that would make using the platform a lot more enjoyable.

I think this way they can do any changes they want up until the very time they're doing the giveaway without anyone crying about how the free game they got wasn't the advertised one. While guessing was fun and I liked knowing in advance as well, I can see why they would decide against it anymore.
