Greetings community,

There has yet to be an official policy on entering a GotY edition game when you already own the base game, but there is still plenty of DLC to be had from the pack. Typically we would leave it up to the gifters at their discretion if they noticed the winner already has the base game and if they'd still like to continue the gifting.

After several tickets and PMs today, I wanted to ask you guys how you felt about either allowing people to enter these giveaways or add it in with the "Don't enter games you already own" policy.

Thoughts?

I would say not depending on the value of the DLC. If it is worth significantly more than the base game, then yes.

the game belongs to the gifter. it should be no one's choice but their own. i just think it makes sense for the gifter to check out the winner's profile and see how much of the dlc they already own prior to making their decision.

The game belongs to the gifter, but the gifter doesnt make the rules to choose the winner one, plus the gifter has a profile with such value information called "Percent Received by Users" which can damage the reputation... the steam users that dont make giveaways dont have nothing to worried about except complain about the "X" entrys = 0 games won's, but if someone suspicious about a gifter everyone will jump on his/her neck...

Depends how hard it is to incorporate 1 radio button and the system behind it.
Meaning the ideal solution would be for the gift maker to decide if a) to allow or b) not allow people with base games to enter.
It should be automatic in that case of showing "You already own this game" message if b) is chosen.

No. I've had the chance to enter for packs that come with the game (which i already had) and all the DLC and decided not to enter every time. I don't approve.

Big for 2012.

It should definitely fall under the "don't enter for games you already own" policy IMO.
The core of the product is the base game itself, the DLC is add on extras. Even if there is significant large DLC it's still not going to be nearly as much content as the base game itself.

Give someone who doesn't own the game at all a chance to win IMO.

There is lots of DLC in the Civ5 GOTY edition for example, but it would be completely unfair if I were to enter and win the giveaway IMO.

It may be a bit more tedious for the mods to implement but I think it should be done on a case by case basis such as for Fallout 3 where the DLC costs more with the base game than the GOTY edition.

You know what? If the publisher thought it was worth releasing a second version of the game, I don't have a problem with someone else wanting to win a second version of the game if they already have the first.

I'd say don't enter if you own the base AND some DLC's but not if you don't own the DLC's. But do what you think is best :)

Don't allow it, it's very poor taste.

About the only case I can think it'd be acceptable is if some sort of a Railworks complete pack was brought out and put on steamgifts and the winner had just the base game.

But that scenario is really more of a rare case by case thing, the exception not the rule.

I'm okay with someone entering a giveaway in such cases!

Well I always put a note in the description saying whether or not I'm allowing it for that particular game.

I feel the best solution is to allow the gifter to decide what they want to do... Have some checkbox when you make a game giveaway, letting the gifter say yes or no to people entering it.

However, if that is not possible, I would say disallow it. The idea behind this whole thing is to share, and spread the wealth so we all get some. It'd be better to give to someone who has nothing, than someone who has a little bit.

Should really be up to the person making the giveaway.

While i completely understand what you say, i also know there's usually a lot of the DLCs from those packs, its the same concept of the orange box, while i have CSS DODS and Portal 1, i dont have HL2, EP1 or EP2, and i'd love to have them. (hell if i had the chance i'd give back those Source games).

I think its more up to the person making the giveaway.
