My friends and I got together last weekend for some 4-player couch multiplayer. Played Rocket League, Towerfall Ascension and Crawl. All awesome and recommended (Crawl is underrated, unknown and insanely fun!). What are some of your favourite couch multiplayer games on PC?

Speaking of couch multiplayer, check out this Lvl3+ GA!

edit: Note I'm talking about multiplayer played on a single PC. Not LAN party, networking a bunch of PCs.

i've played these and recommend them:

and these i've played single player and would like to try multiplayer from the couch:

i also think these would be fun:

i'm hoping to organize a couch gaming time with a bunch of friends too -- have 4 controllers, a large couch, and a pc connected to the tv; just need to find the time. crawl and towerfall ascension are also on my list, but you already mentioned them. hadn't considered rocket league for split screen...

Everyone forgets Emulation. Toss in some:
Super Smash Bros Melee
Goldeneye 64
NBA Jam Tournament Edition
NFL Quarterback Club
Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana), or Seiken Densetsu 3 (both are only 3 players max)
Super Bomberman
Timesplitters (Instagib Monkey Match)
Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3 (Halo 2 has the best maps)

  1. Screencheat - A cool, simple game which can be played in local with up to four players.
  2. Sonic and All-Stars Racing something something God-darn Fucking Long Title - Racing game, up to four players if I recall correctly.
  3. GRID 2 - For some reason, this is one of the lesser-known local multiplayer racing games. It's pretty good too.
  4. Crypt of the NecroDancer - You can play with a friend. Limited to 2 players, though.

  • Nation Red - Endless Twin Stick Shooter. It's well made, has a nice feel to it and the music is pretty good. 1-4 players
  • Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed - Mario Kart-esque racing game. Chances are that you'll like it, if you like Mario Kart. In my opinion inferior characters, though. 1-4 players
  • Magicka - kind of a funny Action Adventure. Has some issues, but for me it was an entertaining experience. You can goof around quite a lot. 1-4 players
  • The Trine series - Plattformer with a touch of Lost Vikings. Gorgeous graphics, nice gameplay. 1-3 players
  • Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes - a bomb defusing game with a unique concept: One players has to defuse the bomb, the rest got the defusal manual and has to give instructions. Player 1 doesn't see the manual, the rest doesn't see the bomb. Awesome game, had a blast! 2-x players

There are some strategy games you can play in Hot Seat mode. Chances are, if you like playing these games in multiplayer you know about them. Still, I had Fun with some Total War, Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic games.

Games for 2 players:

  • Never Alone - Beautiful, quiet Plattformer. The setting, sort of an Inuit fairy tale, is unique and I found it interesting. The gameplay is kind of short, but enjoyable.
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us - DC Fighting game. Good graphics, good gameplay. Not my particular genre, but I still liked it a lot.

Highly recommend:

  • BattleBlock Theater
  • Broforce
  • Castle Crashers
  • Crawl
  • Double Dragon: Neon
  • Enter the Gungeon
  • Gang Beasts
  • Nuclear Throne

And if you're into fighting game, every fighting game on Earth is co-op game. The same should happens with racing games (sadly not all racing games can co-op), but for some reasons, racing games are always fun for the party no matter what.
A couch co-op category is needed in case we have friends / kids visit:

Thanks for the suggestions. We tend to avoid fighting games because they require too much checking movelists etc. Pick-up-and-play factor is where it's at. EG - Towerfall, there is nothing really needed to learn to start to play, although it's very hard to master.

My couch is not big enough for that kind of party - it's already cosy for 2 - but your suggestions look fun once I upgrade my couch :-)
