Seasons after Fall is both a great game and a pretty one to look at.
Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders also has pretty good art direction, though it is not the main selling feature of the game.
Thanks for the gibs :D

Persona 5, the art work in that game is stunning. Its so stylistic, its what makes the game so playable. From walking ATM's, to a crazy menu, to anime standard cutscenes...everything...its just great too much to talk about to do it justice.
Tengami has already been mentioned, its a pop up book with very little gameplay, really unique.
Hotel Dusk, that games art style got me through the door years ago when it first came out. Its like pencil drawn in places, really cool.
XIII was one of the earliest games I can remember to use cell shading, its criminal it never got a sequel.
Blade Runner, the game may not have drawn peices of artwork but the music is pure art as is the writing. The entire atmosphere that game created was insane. I'd love a remaster of that game, it was so unique, I've never really played a game like it since.

Kith Tales from the Fractured Plateus
Awesome post

A few off the top of my head that I don't think were mentioned yet:
Incredipede - Creators used actual woodlbock print techniques to create the visual assets.
Pixeljunk Eden - Beautiful minimalist aesthetic matches the ambient electronic music very well
KAMI - Created by the same folks who made the visually spectacular, and aforementioned, Lumino. Actual paper cutouts were photographed and used to make the assets in both of these games.
Armikrog - Similar to the aforementioned point and click adventure Dream Machine game, this was created using clay stop-motion animation techniques
One Night Stand - I think this game was created using an interesting rotoscoping technique to give the animation a very different feel to what is typically seen in games these days.

Ha, interesting was it harder to make Armikrog cause it was so much work sculpting or it actually was easier to transfer it and make basic animations like gifs. I mean we hear things like " it took two people more than a year to fully create and animate our main character"
So which process is harder ? =)
Nice list, actually have Pixeljunk Eden on my "to do" list =))

It's a good question, and I think it mostly comes down to level of experience with each. I think if someone were starting from zero and with no software animation experience but with a touch of DIY artistry in them, then the practical flow of stop motion animation might be easier to get into at first and would lend itself to giving a game a unique appearance since these sorts of "real-world" techniques are not commonly used in today's games. However, once the learning threshold of animation software is overcome then it would likely be a little faster to use computer assisted animation and modeling to automate and cut out some of the practical redundancies involved in stop motion techniques.
In either case though, to achieve superlative results would require a very hefty investment in time and experience in either field. I think people often underestimate the level of artistry and time required to create really expressive and stylistic movement, and the field of animation in general tends to be a little misunderstood and underappreciated. When working at a feature film level of quality, it can take sometimes 2-3 weeks for a professional animator to nail down 20-30 seconds of an important character animation sequence -- and that's character animation only, not including stuff like modeling, rigging, physics-based animation, etc.

So another game got my attention, Riptale
it looks like a nice use of 2 colors for the world, and a 3-d one for the action, something like Downwell but clearly on a new level
Personally i think using limited colors is hard, really hard. Ofcourse we wont have a new Limbo every year, but i really like devs trying and perfecting! =)
This time a public giveaway - https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/QG7tL/riptale cause the thread isnt new anymore

Very cool, I can definitely see the Downwell influence there. Thanks for introducing that game!
Oh yes and LIMBO... that game is so groundbreaking in so many ways. The visual atmosphere they produced is often mimicked, but none have quite captured the same kind of eloquent cinematic feel that it so brilliantly delivered.

Hi there =)
So not long ago i played and finished a game called Dark Train which is a cool game by itself, the puzzles and the absence of any tutorial. but its made by Paperash studio and maybe you guessed it, the game is made out of paper. Maybe it seems strange but it looks so stylish, it a really interesting way to stand out, but also it's kind of an art project, i mean even more than usual.
So i looked back at some games that stood out to me as a different approach, rather than making things look realistic they try to make them unique looking. First one i remembered was Duckles: the Jigsaw Witch which had some really crazy art direction, it definitely wasn't for everyone but i think if you saw it, you'll probably remember it, and its not a bad thing right ?
Next one was a cartoony wierdness called Werther Quest its kind of cute and colorful and strange at the same time, but i liked it =)) Here are some keys for the demo of this game =)
From the recent i played i have to mention ESSENCE it just looks so good, but wheres the art in it some may ask ? its just graphics, but actually there are some really cool tricks there to hide lack of great graphics and look even nicer in the process. Like sparkles on the textures and a great use of light, again it starts to look more like art. If you want to see more go Here
And to close my top of the head picks is a game Apocalipsis – Harry at the end of the world It just got my attention, i mean right away, and its not hard to guess why, and this game takes its inspiration from a German painter named Albrecht Dürer. So this one is just screaming art =))
I actually have 3 keys for the beta of this game as well, but since its not released yet, you can say if you want to play it in the comments, maybe i'll give you the key =)
So what really stunning games i missed (i mean a lot obviously) show us the games you love the art style of and tell us why =)) The more unique the better =) and i suppose you found all thats not actually hidden ? =)
