I'm not a big gifter, I have only given away a couple of games on this site. However, all the gifts I've gifted have been given because I wanted to sustain the nature of the site and because I figured someone who wanted to play that game would be happy to receive it.

That doesn't happen, however, as every single giveaway I've made I have run into problems. People who traded what they received, people who have yet to play it, people who already had the game (and felt ENTITLED to it!) and now, more than one person mocking me because I'm giving away two old games (not GOG consumers, it seems). This type of asshollery really pisses me off as I could have saved the money to use on myself or, in the case of giftable copies I got for free, traded them for something else.

So, why exactly do YOU give games away? Do you genuinely want to make someone happy? Maybe you just want to boost your ego? Or you're trying to get into a private group? Please discuss.

I honestly dont know, and seeing as most of my giveaways have been indie bundles (low income means low cost giveaways) through the forums I couldnt tell you if people actually play them. I suppose its not like they could trade them away even if they wanted to though.

I actually purchased Evil Genius a few days ago for the sole purpose of creating a puzzle giveaway. I was sitting on my bed in my dorm and I thought "HOLY HELL I HAVE AN IDEA FOR A PUZZLE" and that's why. No other reason. hahaha

I'm glad I don't check what the winners do with their gifts. I'm disappointed though that few bother to thank for them. The winners of my first giveaways thanked, but most of them haven't since. It bothers me more when I give outside of the normal Steam Gifts process since then I can't tell if people got them.

Anyway, I've always been a collector of gifts, physical or digital, and this is just a place to get rid of some of these gifts.

if you noticed anyone who traded the prize, report them immediately using the support button. This is against the rules. They are not to do this. I am very appreciative of the games you are giving out.

Just because. I don't get a good feeling out of it or anything like that, but I feel like doing it anyways.

Simply I somehow feel happy giving away my games. I don't really care about what the guy(s) do with the game after that. But as you mentioned, yeah, I do get the feeling being ripped off when the guy(s) doesn't/don't actually want the game (even just to add up to Steam collection) and trade the game away for profit.
Lol, I wish I had CSGO right now to make a puzzle giveaway. Fun time.

Because I want to, because I can, and because some games just need to be played by more people

I like giving away stuff. I've been trying my hardest to make an AAA title giveaway, sadly so far never managed it. Currency exchange rates here are crazy (6 egyptian pounds to 1 dollar) so in Egyptian pounds (my currency) that's too much money. Still, I'm saving for it.

I never actually checked what the people who won my game did with it. I do know that the one giveaway I made on the forums, for QUBE, the dude was really happy and started playing it right away, so that made me happy.

Judging by your comments, I'm not even going to look at those who won my giveaways so I won't get depressed.

It's a good way to make people frustrated by my puzzles. :-] (And every now and then, someone trying to solve them is brave enough to contact me, and the chat with them is generally quite pleasant.)

Havent given away anything on steam gifts yet, the things I did have were a few extra copy of lucid and faire solitaire felt like they clogged the site up too much, so just gave them out to random people >.<

The sad thing is people actually enforce the ”do not trade” rule. This is sad because more than half of the games won here won't be played, and since trading is against the rules, that basically means more than half of the games won here will rot in someone's library for a +1 to their Steam games. Very well thought out rule, if this were a perfect world and people would only enter giveaways for games they are interested in. But instead, we have a situation where a person can't trade game X for game Y, which would mean that both games are played.

But hey, the important thing is "Received Gifts Valued at $480,900.59", fuck the games, because who cares about those anyway?

Alternatively, people should only enter for games that they definitely will play

I've been doing this for most of my time here

I wrote the most incredibly long rant in response to you earlier.
Then I deleted it.

In short, please don't enter for games you're not going to play. If I wanted to make people richer, I'd just give away money.
But I want to give games to people who want to play them, so I give away games here.

I was going to reply to you, but I think Taerdin and dys said enough. Just because people do it, you shouldn't do it too, even if you are planning on trading it for another game.

I never said that, lol. I was saying that's what most people do (they shouldn't, but they do, and that rule makes the games won by this kind of people worthless), i've never won a giveaway :). Of course i have no reason to want a game i.. er, don't want.

Actually, people who enter for things they don't even want either haven't bothered to read the rules or are so dumb they'd trade anyway, so you don't really have an argument there at all.

Ok, i give up, guess there really are no people entering a giveaway just because it's a cheap 5p and looks good in the library. No sir.

Some people have totally unrealistic views about gifting, just because they like to continue in their beliefs that the games are won by someone who actually cares, more often than not, that's not true. Then again, i haven't posted any giveaways (nor will i on this site), so i shouldn't care. Cya.

I'm pretty sure you just managed to completely miss the point. The kind of people who will just enter anything are the same kind who will be unaware of or outright ignore the no trading policy, so you already get your wish. Congratulations. They'll continue getting banned for it, though. That's because we're not here to help stock traders' inventories and that's why the rule exists. Hence, your argument doesn't even apply. That's what I was getting at. How you managed to come to the conclusion that the response you just gave was in any way relevant to that is beyond me.

Doing good to other people makes them do good to someone else, I hope. Well why wouldn't I be nice, in this case giving away games, if I can do it without a bigger trouble. But I'm pretty sure everyone gets some ego boost of such giveaways on the internet, even just a little. This is still only the internet and it is far away from if you do physically good to others.

If the person who enters/wins a giveaway, I consider it to be up to them and their moral. I wouldn't punish for whatever they may do with the won prize. You are trying to do good and setting limits to it doesn't make it any better.

Because this site is refreshing, frankly I have a pretty cynical perception of humanity. It's nice to see a site that exists based solely on peoples willingness and desire to spend their money to give others games they may not otherwise get the opportunity to play.
Buy contributing to giveaways I do my own small part in seeing that it thrives.
