Collecting things are fun!
I don't really collect stuff, I'm a pretty boring dude.
But here's the thing: I enjoy getting a couple of things like books, comics, music albums, or whatever, I've even thought of getting one or two figures from shows or video games I like. But I don't tend to go the extra mile and try to collect a lot of stuff.
My reasoning being that if I have just a couple of stuff, I have them because they mean something to me. they are special and I chose to get them over most other stuff. If I start buying everything it doesn't feel as special anymore. I dunno, that's what I always think.
Also I have no money.

I've also recently just hit 700 games in my steam library!
Me too! I'm up to 734 now. I look at people who have 3000, 5000, 7000 and I just can't even.
I collect PC games, but only ones that I have some interest in. I also collect board games and tabletop games.
And oddly, I have a collection of turtle figurines. That started when I was a kid and someone got one, and it was pretty cool, and then someone else got me one, and then it just snowballed from there.

Regrets and dead dreams.
In all seriousness, I don't collect anything since I feel that collecting things is a waste of time, money, and doesn't make sense unless you actually make practical use of said collection. Never saw the appeal to collecting, strangely enough since it looks like many people are collectors one way or another.

For me at least I think it is a kind of compulsion. The objects themselves aren't even the point of it, it is the hunt for something new and different and rare and a sense that you'll be missing out if you don't buy it. Finding that rare item for a good price, or winning an ebay auction, there is a certain rush of dopamine that happens. I think psychologically it's probably not dissimilar from compulsive gambling. Maybe I should have become a detective or a researcher.
For other people, they probably collect things just for fun and enjoyment... a lady I used to work with collected sheep and sheep-themed things... She had sheep earrings and wore shirts with pictures of sheep on them... etc... she didn't go out of her way to "collect" sheep stuff necessarily, she just really liked sheep and always chose the sheep versions of everything when possible. :P

Re: Sheep Lady: That's... that's so cute...
I think collecting things really hits the ye olde animal brain impulse of 'keep a bunch of shit around bc you might need it to not die one day', translated through millennia to now being 'keep a bunch of shit around bc you like it, blow your money on more shit you like'. Your description of 'the hunt' is that exactly.
It might seem like a big waste of time to some, but when I see what some other people spend time on - like being big assholes to strangers for no reason, for one prevalent example - I can't help but wish they put their energy into collecting stamps or model trains or beanie babies instead. Resource waste is relative!

Well, I collect balls; more specifically spheres made of various gemstones.
Not my personal collections but, these are a small sample of what I have (most of the spheres I have are as big as a 5lb bowling ball).
In order of appearance:
The spectral hematite log that I have looks way better than what that picture does. About a foot and a half long, and it looks like you're staring into space seeing a bunch of stars/galaxies looking back at you.
Got a bunch more but I can't remember all of the gemstones. I spend too much money on these ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Where does one, specifically you, purchase these perfectly shaped spheres of different gemstones? I believe you have just awoken a new interest within me.

You can try searching for Rock and Mineral shows in your local media and/or google-fu; that would be your best bet.
Could be some specialty stores in your area that cater to these kinds of things. Maybe some Wiccan/Pagan type of store? There's a rock show that comes by my area every years with a gigantic catalog of gems/rocks/minerals/etc. It's incredibly easy to drop $1000 and not even realize it until you're pulling out your wallet.
Spent about $1200 on 3 sphere's and a log of spectral hematite.
And if you REALLY get into it, you can "charge" the rocks with various energies which is a totally different angle if you chose to follow. There are classes that go into detail about how to do so. I just buy them because I love staring into them; it's like looking into another tiny world.

I was thinking of buying them purely for the aesthetic value as well. That Labradorite one looks amazing.
I would love to have that on a shelf somewhere just to take down and look at every now and then.
Thanks for the reply!

The labradorite sphere was the very first one I saw and purchased, and is still my favourite to this day. It's about 7lbs and bigger than a 5-pin bowling ball. The obsidian is definitely a close second.
I have another sphere, that looks like an earthy planet, complete with swirling clouds, oceans, islands etc. Mostly blue, white and a bit of green; like looking at earth from outer space. Can't remember the name of it though but it ranks right up there as well.
Some of these, I've seen at the shop and passed over for a year or more before I had come back to purchase them. Almost like they were meant/waiting for me.

I used to collect Pokemon cards when I was little as everyone did at the time. Then my mom threw them all away when I was at school because I think the wind blew them everywhere, as I'd stacked them on a table in my room with the window open:(
I don't think it's related to that event (but it could be because that did break lil me and I've never gotten over it), now I collect whisky. Scotch, and right now Japanese.
Oh, I also used to collect these annoying dumb things when I was 12-14. Thought I'd mention them cause the sight still gives me a bit of nostalgia.

I collect dust. In the sense that I don't really get out of my way to collect stuff but sometimes I end up with stuff that basically piled up without me noticing, for example, when I was a kid I had a collection of plush animals not because I really wanted them but because I really liked claw machines and was kinda decent at playing them (I got rid of them eventually). The same thing happened to me with my steam library, I just started buying bundles and it got out of control, but because they don't occupy a physical space and instead are hidden inside my computer I don't mind and have no incentive for stopping other than me panicking when I stop to think about it.
That said there was one exception, I collected model cars in earnest during my childhood up to my mid to late teens, but one day I questioned myself as to why I did it and was unable to answer. I still have most of them but stashed away in boxes I never open. I do keep the last models I got still in their original boxes stored in a different place, I guess to remind me of something, I pretty much forgot why at this point.

Used to collect so many things (physically, like gaming magazines, music cds etc.) in my lifetime, but kinda changed and now only collect digital stuff, like steam games and music, etc. Not really up to collecting things again that will collect dust. I still have lots of stuff which I should sell on eBay. I will one day, maybe...

My fiance would say I collect cats :D But for real, besides my digital hoarding, I mostly collect plants and fishing lures. Right now I've got a huge collection of African violets, poppies, spider plants, pansies, and succulents. And my lures, it's mostly just me being really indecisive combined with how much I like fishing for different species in different bodies of water xD

Games obviously, mostly on Steam (7k+ now) and few hundred combined in GOG, Origin, Uplay etc.
However, my favorite hoarding hobby is collecting live music performances from my favorite bands/artists. I collect audio only in digital format. Commonly known as "bootlegs" (in reality the material comes form variety of sources, some even officially released by the bands). I'm a hardcore collector with Smashing Pumpkins related material (ie. I collect every recording of every show, which are available). With couple of other groups I collect every show, but mostly keep only the best sounding recording of each show. And with the rest I stick to recordings which sound good to me. You can browse my collection here, if you like: http://deadmarsh.co.nf/all.html (missing about 50 latest additions to my collection at the moment).
To go with my live music passion I also collect official releases from my favorite musicians. I try to get things as CDs as much as possible (currently about 1100 CDs). Got to have the physical object :P
When I was a lot younger I collected hockey cards with passion. I still have my collection, but I'm not really doing much to add to it. All the guys I collected have retired from playing by now anyway :D
And I also have a DVD/Blu-ray collection of about 700 movies/TV-series..

Vinyls (I don't even have a vinyl player though, lol) and I used to collect gems, and figurines of dragons and fairies but by now, they're just gathering dust at my parents' house.
Oh and I guess you could say I'm also collecting CDs and DVDs but then again... I mean, are those even considered collectibles?

Magic cards, although they are expensive, so my collection is nothing impressive. So around 500 cards(and 100 of them must be land, and maybe 50 evolving wilds). Only 3 Planeswalkers(the original Ajani, Gideon Martial Paragon and Nissa Sage Animist).
And kinder egg toys. I have around 50 minifigures. I had more, but you start losing them over time :P (and constant moving, but minor details).

Probably my Steam library. I also have all the 50 original state quarters (1999-2008) and some from after the year 2008 plus a few "rare" ones like $1 coins and 50c and so on. At some point I was also collecting TF2, Dota 2, and Overwatch items but since i've quit those games I sorta cashed out.

So, these photos are a tad all over the place, but we are working on it with more storage! Collection is pretty small but I've just started collecting Pop! figures and Pokemon cards! All the tins are pretty much full and in my first pack I got I got a full art GX which was incredible and started my addiction! There are also a few Witcher statues which I need to finish getting!
I won't ask for a weird format or ask you to post giveaways, I just want you to show off your collections big or small!
Steam libraries are DEFINITELY welcome and tell me your best purchases! You should never be ashamed of having the money to buy games to play or +1, what you do with your life is all for yourself and nobody else should judge you. They are probably sad and poor and want to play your games ;)
I've also recently just hit 700 games in my steam library! My favourite purchases would probably be The Witcher 3 because its my favourite game, Rocket League because I met a lot of people and basically got to know Ally through it <333 and Dead by Daylight because I've had a blast streaming it and I've recently just got affiliate and almost at 150 followers on twitch (will not plug my twitch since people will report and suspend me but you can find it on my profile!)
When support brings drama to the thread...
My collection!
