It's a completely different beast, while it still is a mix of 2D and 3D the boost formula is gone and replaced by an original type of gameplay that wasn't particularly well received, hence why they went back to boosting for Forces.
I actually like it and really enjoyed my time with it, but I'm a fan of platformers as a general genre first so I could ignore how un-Sonic-y the game feels more easily than most people. To put it simply, if you can get over the fact that this is a Sonic game with a run button and no momentum whatsoever then it's a competent platformer with some interesting gimmicks.

Sonic Mania's Encore DLC is on sale for ($2.49 / 50% off) which seems to match the biggest discount to date. I've been enjoying the game since grabbing this bundle and so I'll probably be grabbing this DLC to get the full experience :]
