Congratulations! I prefer desktops, but if you need laptop for some reason - this one's spec looks pretty decent.

Nice change, hope this one lasts at least as long as your previous one.

+1. Acer is by far the worst of what is otherwise a generally very reliable and excellent PC and PC components manufacturer community in Taiwan. Don't know what it is, but Acer's computers seem to go slower and have more issues than anything else I've used.

Congratulations on the upgrade. I have had only terrible experiences with anything Acer, but to those were lower spec'd. Yours looks pretty impressive, and I hope Acer does a better job with its high end stuff. Seven years out of a laptop is damn impressive. I trust you also take great care of your things. Best wishes!

My MacBook pro is 11 years old now and still does what I need fron it (browsing, simple text and calc, photo library, music stuff).
You can really milk laptops when you give them a good ssd.

Congrats on the new laptop, and thanks for the giveaway

Frankly, with your old i5-3320M and your old Radeon 8670M, you should be able to run programming tools pretty fine, as long as you pump it up with a sufficient amount of RAM, an SSD, and maybe an OS reinstall. Although 4 cores (like an i7-3xxx M) would sure have been more futureproof.
Anyhow, great new config which should last super long unless you want to game ^^

if i need one tool open than old laptop is ok, but when i need multiple, it starts to lag, freeze etc. I am mostly a php developer. When I develop something for myself, I usually don't need more than two tools open at same time. But I also work from home from my laptop and at work we work with multiple integrations that often require multiple, different usege tools to be open. And that is where it gets bad as I can't really perform my best when I need to constantly open/close tools I need.

Yeah but I mean, if they're just open and not really processing anything (ie you have a bunch idle in the background while you do stuff in another one), just shoving it a lot of RAM should do the trick. What you describe looks a lot like swapping, an overburdened CPU would result in slow-downs but not freezes unless you also have process prioritization issues.

A nice choice, I considered it myself when getting my new laptop. I ended up with the same CPU and GPU, they are definitely the best price/performance point right now.
Acer have an awful reputation with their cheaper models, but the Helios is almost universally popular and comes pre-tuned specifically for optimum gaming performance. As a result it comfortably out-performs almost any comparable spec straight out of the box.
You were right to upgrade the RAM, though, 8GB in single channel would have been a real bottleneck for performance in gaming and even moreso when doing heavy work.
I love that comparison site you posted; I held out almost 9 years, so my own upgrade was an even bigger jump than yours: CPU GPU

I'd never consider a product by Acer, but hopefully yours will be a good one. :)

looks great - 180w power max. for a 1660ti - very interesting.

grats on the laptop and thank you for the giveaway. I did something similar last year upgrading from an Asus G74 purchased in 2011 to an MSI GE75 Raider....going from an nvidia 550m to a 2070 has been mind-blowing. Enjoy the new machine - game hard, game fun! ( ' :

Congrats on the new friend. It's similar to the one my gf has and she's been very happy with it.
I'm stunned they are still shipping laptops with only 8Gb of RAM but since it's easy and cheap to fix, unlike everything else in a laptop, it's not the worst problem to have.
Hope it fares you well and you have many years of gaming together.

After more than 7 years using same old (but not that bad) laptop, I have finally bought a new one. Purchase timing was kinda escalated cause my sister's laptop died and we decided that I buy a new for myself and she is taking my old one.
Laptop I bought: Acer Predator Helios 300 PH317-53
My old laptop: HP Pavilion 15-e080sr
I decided that I need some change since my old one is not performing well enough while I am programming, IDEs are getting sluggish, multiple tools can't be run at same time because it's running out of cpu/memory etc.
CPU changes to compare | GPU changes to compare
So far only minor issue is that this model has only 8 GB ram but that will be fixed next tuesday when my order of 32 GB ram will arrive :)
Other than that, I will continue to use Linux. Although I completely changed distro from ParrotOS (Debian) I had on my previous laptop to Fedora (Red Hat) to be more on same architecture level as centOS I am using in multiple places (work, servers, docker etc.).

Edit: My order of ram came bit earlier, now i am running 32 GB ram instead of original 8 GB :)
