For me its simple i have steam and hundreds of games on it, they have been around a long time and used to be crap also but they have worked out most there issues over the years, i have no use for any other game distribution software on my system nor do i want to have multiple company's software running on my system to do the same job that one was already doing just fine.im not sure if they do this for meta data or just greed trying to find ways into your wallet all i know as a consumer is its unwanted, these extra steps and hassles just to play a game you payed for make a good argument for piracy.

Its about the 30%...
The first step was to get rid of the 50+% which the retailers ask* for. Now the.2nd step is to get rid of the cut that valve asks for. Steam shares all the relevant statistics they'd want I guess. A minor wish left would be.more control above the forefront of the store to channel sales better.
** that's a rough estimate that I have picked up though I cant tell.if it fits.

2 good reasons:
Comment has been collapsed.
Uplay and Origin are unnecessary garbage, fueled 100% by greed... but otherwise, Uplay is better than Origin, Origin offers literally nothing to make it competitive, at least Uplay gives you unlocks with achievement points, which is at least, something.
There is the exceptionally annoying fact that games on steam use uplay... meaning you have to have both, also this practice prevents them from keeping their cut of the profit from steam, so it's just a huge waste of effort to even force you to start it in Uplay.
Comment has been collapsed.
Integrating and forcing uplay was their.method of.sideloading from steam store. If you bought the game already you're probably unlike to not install their store with it. If they have done enough conversion on gamers they can pull the games from steam.
Guess why both Google and apple have a no-store-within-app clause in their app stores
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, that's likely the goal, based on the numbers of their sales I've heard, it's not working lol I've heard statistics that even origin loses tons of money, more than they are making by not using steam as well. As there's far less money in the console market, and many gamers are just buying the console versions rather than using their inferior steam lol
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't like layered DRM (be it Steam+uplay or steam+securom or anything of that nature). It just gives you more points of potential failure.
That said, I would not be able to say that I hate Uplay itself without also at the same time use arguments that would be just as valid to use against Steam. Once they dropped the stupid "always online" bit (which they had in AC2 and some other games released around that time), Uplay seem to have been working quite well.
Currently, from a pure technical point of view, Uplay does seem to be behind Steam, but Steam seem to be behind Origin (which actually works really well, and has a better system for downloading & installing games, even if the UI is worse)
Comment has been collapsed.
Uplay and Origin don't really have any games I'm interested in so I don't really care for either but at least Origin doesn't advertises their games on steam. I mean if EA can do their own platform without advertising them on steam Ubisoft should be able to, right? For gods sake even GOG is able to do it. If the games are good and the people are interested in them they will use Uplay even without them selling Uplay games on steam.
Comment has been collapsed.
what a strange argument. most people are very happy that ubisoft titles are also available on steam. this has nothing to do with advertisement. you have certain advantages with the steam version, like better update-system and faster updates.
Comment has been collapsed.
So if it's not advertisement for Uplay why do they make it so you can buy the game on steam but still need Uplay to play it?
It's not for extra protection because you can also play it with just Uplay so steam as extra DRM doesn't give them any extra security.
And Valve still get's their cut when you buy it trough steam.
So are you saying that Ubisoft decided that their update system is so bad and broken that they don't try to improve it and instead just use the steam one while still requiring Uplay? Is that the only reason they did that? Or do they want to advertises their own PC game store on the biggest PC game store out there? I think the latter sounds more likely.
Comment has been collapsed.
i guess my post was not formulated very well. of course you're right and the reason why steam games still need uplay is, that they want to advertise their own platform. what i meant was, that people are happy that uplay titles are also available on steam, and they are this regardless of the intention behind it. your post sounds like you don't want uplay games on steam ("EA can do their own store without advertising on steam, so why can't ubisoft"). my point is, that most people want those games on steam, even with additional uplay integration.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah looks we misunderstood each other.
But my main point still remains. They could just release the game on Steam without Uplay and we would still have all the advantages of Steam without the need of Uplay and their unreliable online DRM. Of course people like it that the games are integrated into Steam at least until they get connectivity problems with Uplay. I'm not saying that Ubisoft should stop releasing games on Steam I'm just saying that it would be better for the costumers if they just put them on Steam like everybody else and not with extra DRM which leads just to more problem for paying customers. Best case scenario is they have extra DRM that we never see and we never have any problems with but even than for us as the customer that DRM had no benefits what so ever. And worst case is that you can't play the game because of it, what apparently happened to a lot of people especially on launch of a new game.
I don't hate Uplay as a store but it's integration in other online stores in unnecessary in my opinion.

sure, i would prefer ubisoft games without uplay on steam, too. but you sounded like you'd rather want no ubisoft games on steam, just like there are no ea/origin games. ;)

Part of it is a legacy. When Ubisoft first implemented its DRM it was far more broken than it is today.
Those that bought the games had to resort to using no-CD cracks to actually play their game because the game would literally close down and refuse to work if the servers went down - and as listed in other comments, servers go down pretty often.
That seems to work a lot better these days. Where if you're already logged in you have a chance it works.
But still, having to log into a secondary program to manage your games - and having that program run underneath Steam?
Which ofcourse means that you also have more programs running alongside in generally which adds to the slog for your PC (a problem if you have a lower~mid range PC).
On top of that UPlay is simply broken. It has had so many issues throughout its lifetime and still has many to date.
And all because Ubisoft wants to 'restrict' how their software can be used.
Literally everything Ubisoft runs through Uplay. Much like everything EA runs through Origin these days.
People hate it because they do not like being told to run something through a secondary program. Being forced to install a second or even third program to play their games.
And they hate it even more when that program simply does not work very well half the time or hasn't worked well in the past.

it's funny, uplay works perfectly well for me. i just don't have any problems. and i am sure it works well for most people. it might not work as good as steam (which is more than 10 years old). but even steam has countless little problems that can get quite annoying from time to time.
Comment has been collapsed.
Uplay has been around for quite some time itself. (Atleast 5 years by now...) And Ubisofts poor attempts at DRM have been around even longer.
There are few excuses that have you get away with making it so paying customers can not play your products due to DRM you implemented.
I've had instances with several Ubisoft games where their DRM outright prevented me from playing. One of them was because my own internet was down. The others because their servers were down for maintenance.
In the latter cases the 'recommended' solution was to use a no-CD crack. This was the advice given by Ubisoft itself at the time because their servers were going to be down for an extended period of time.
I don't know where you yourself are located - but it would not surprise me if a number of the problems are actually region bound due to local servers going down and them not having had redundancy built in.
However that all is besides the point. I'm listing reasons why people hate it. You haven't had problems with it, others have.
Thats why they hate it. Because it broke on them. It working fine for you does not negate their past experiences.
And on top of that there still is the whole "you're forced to run another layered program to play your game" deal.
Ubisoft wants to play along with the rest. Valve and EA made their own launcher and shop, so Ubi had to aswell. And what better way to promote your tool than to FORCE every one of your products to run through it, even if you're distributing them through other services already?
Comment has been collapsed.
well, at least uplay/ubisoft has pretty decent customer support. you can call them, and you get to talk to a real person who will try to help you (and in my case the guy was very nice and helped me quickly). imagine we had that on steam. ^^

A lot of this hate is brought upon by early uplay when people couldn't play their games without the always on drm (which required internet connection) imo. Plus I guess Steam users are disgruntled by the fact that they have to download another client to play their Steam game. I've played the crap out of my games on uplay including tons of multiplayer matches in Brotherhood and Revelations, and haven't had any issues.

As a matter of fact I've had more issues with Steam than uplay. But I do miss my achievements, cards, etc. on uplay

well mostly game dont have achivement, bad multiplayer, save game gone for some reason or even game wont show no matter what program you install like HAWK2 with anyone buy game on steam they must have 2 program run on same time very few of them have trading card ,since ubisoft is become milk cow with their product AC franchie and hate pc user for no reason and never answer your question so in my opinion why they not sale thier game only on Uplay like Origin let see how ubisoft pc market goes

I don't really hate Uplay, I just want all my games at one place. Sadly for them Steam has the good community features and features to make gaming fun like the achievements, cards and other Steamworks. I still prefer DRM free games, but I prefer Steam if there is no DRM free option.

It's been quite some time, so I don't even remember which game it was, but I remember not being able to play a game I purchased because of Uplay so I ended up just pirating the game to actually play it.
Funny how that works. I pay for a game, and end up pirating it cause the "anti-pirating" method causes me to not be able to play the copy I legitimately purchased.

I've been working with uplay for a while.
and never had problems... so, it's luck i guess

It only takes 2-3 times of playing a game and managing to get through a tough part only to have UPlay go offline and toss out all your progress because you're not connected to it before you decide you hate it. Or none of the DLC working properly because for some reason the game is out of sync with your account - which shouldn't even happen since it requires always-on connectivity in the first place.
If you're going to build a game platform that requires connectivity, at least make sure it's stable.

UBISOFT loose the confidence of many of us after we lear about Tavis Ormandy allegations, claimed that Uplay was a rootkit , he show the code for a exploit, later the exploit was fixed. But regain confidence of customers after this, is not going to be easy.
Also in some games the always-on requirement, still exist, even when UBIsoft claimed that this requirement was lifted in 2010.

People just need something to bitch about that is all
I mean look at Microsoft no matter how good they do now people still beat them down for the passed.I guess it just easier to keep on hating then it is to forget and move on.I have used both Uplay and Origin or whatever you want to call it now, with little issues, does that mean they are my first choice maybe not,but hell i dislike steam also and i would prefer everything on GOG but that is just not going to happen at least not anytime soon.
Hell all the bitching people did for windows live i never had any issues logging in,granted i can not comment on the online aspect since i really never used it but i am just saying so many left reviews on steam about how shit it is and you can never long in and not save GTA IV i never once had an issue, though in the end i by passed it since i really did not need the silly chevos i had no use for it,none the less to many where busy bitching instead realizing you could make an offline profile to save a game
Also you go down a very dark road when you let something like say Steam be the monopoly you think paid mods was a bad move, wait until they are the only players left in the game they they can say use this or do not play your games at all I think Steam is just as bad as the rest of them minus maybe GOG,sure they have the better platform as far as community and so forth, but there other tactics of like trying to slip in paid mods, all the trading being really limited, region locks that go farther then they should aka play locks. If it was not pressure from others i doubt we would still have refunds sad when your hands are forced before you will do thing for the community. They print enough money that support should be 10 fold better then what it is but it is yet they keep saying it is #1 thing on the to do list, yet they had time to slip in paid mods.I give credit to the others at least they are not trying to keep adding ways to print money, they mainly have there clients to cut out the middle man and make more money, anyone who said they would not do the same is a bold face liar, you do the same when you sell your car private, you cut out the middle man at the dealer or other wise so you make more then trading it in.
In the end Steam is no better then the rest when it comes to running the show,it just easier to use Steam so everyone flocks to it or in my case are forced to use it or do not play the games i want to play, and frankly i love gaming to much to say fuck it i am not playing this game just because i dislike the platform that is stupid i will not cut off my access to the games i like just because of the platform it uses.Though in the end i really wish i had a better choice then Steam far as great it is in some aspects, the most important aspects imo,are a fail, all well that just how things go i doubt any client would get everything right, but damn do i love GOG for no forced updates and the roll back feature, god do i wish i could have the same option for steam, instead since my internet has a cap and it checks for updates as soon as i log in,i can not play that game until i give an update, why can i not delay until i can update it,i could see an online only game, but a single player, come on.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'l tell you why. Cause people are STUPID. Many prefer to have their games running on two clients at once rather than just on UPlay simply because of the "his is bigger and better" philosophy. So essentially they hate Uplay because it's not Steam. But guess what, you're using UPlay regardless, bozos...
This is why I like what EA did in 2009. They ceased to put their games on Steam and therefore Steam obsessed losers can never play games such as Dragon Age Inquisition or Dead Space 3, because they can't be asked to make a free account and download a free client, which is MUCH better in terms of performance and reliability than Steam and run by a company with an actual tech support that puts everyone else's to complete and total shame (most especially Valve's, whose tech support is particularly dreadful). But hey, Origin doesn't have cards and levels and badges and profile backgrounds... Because we all know that's what's most important in a GAME client :)).
Ubisoft should have done the same, but they didn't cause they're greedy ass-holes and they preferred not to lose the Steam obsessed idiots as clients so they can keep taking their money. So these people essentially pay the greedy ass-holes to receive the worst experience possible from them: a game run by two clients at once. Can't say I feel for them, though. It's not like someone is forcing them to do so. They're just too dumb to realize it themselves :)).

No you can't. I unfortunately got duped into buying Far cry 3 Blood Dragon on Steam, oblivious of the fact that it requires UPlay. I thought that it had the same statute as Call of Juarez Gunslinger (one of the few Ubisoft games that exists on Steam and doesn't also require UPlay) since on UPlay they're only sold together in a bundle. But that turned out not to be the case and, as soon as I started it on Steam, it made me automatically link it to my UPlay account. Which I did.. Had to make the best of it, since I made such a grave mistake. Well, after that I closed it, as well as Steam and opened it from it's icon in the UPlay client. As soon as I clicked on it, it told me it needs to open Steam in order to run and did just that. And so, whether you open it from UPlay or Steam, such a game will ALWAYS require them BOTH.

It's a absolutely broken client with no relevant features at all. It has no business existing. The damn shit didn't let me play my legally bought game for like 3 FUCKING MONTHS.
At least Origin is a decent client that works, and they at least try and get some new features from time to time.

Honest question, what is with all the hate on Uplay?
I know I don't care for Uplay or Origin and would prefer to have all my games under steam if I could. But why do people have all the hate on Uplay's client? I have 2 games on Uplay so far and they have not given me any problems so far.
