So my friend and I just bought Eon Altar, and it was one of his first experiences with RPGs. He wants to delve more into the genre and is looking for some good recommendations :). He is looking for RPG's that:

  • Have turned based combat. Any good RPG rec is welcome, but turned based is preferable
  • Has magic in it.
  • Has character customization and you can play a mage or someone with spells.
  • Open World
  • Are not MMORPGs

Edit: Seems TBC and open world doesn't mix well, so feel free to leave one of them out!

The recommendations don't have to fit all of the bulletins, it's just a preference. I don't expect many games to fit all of those criterias. If you have a favorite in mind that doesn't fit, feel free to still suggest.

Here are some giveaways. They aren't much but I'll add more later.

Tourists kidnapped a little bear
Deaths Hangover
Linked
Zenodyne R
Drop Hunt - Adventure Puzzle

Thanks ahead of time :P

Kings bounty has RPG, open world, TBC. however, the RPG is unique, you command troops.

or, what others already suggested, Baldurs gate and such ;)
edit: also, Eon Altar is AMAZING :D

Open world is tricky.
I guess Dragon Age Inquisition counts, and maybe Witcher 3, but most RPGs are still more linear affairs with branching plotlines.

so...

  • If you wait a week, you can get him Planescape Torment enhanced. Doesn't offer much in customizing how your character looks, makes up for how much you can customize how your character plays.

  • The Shadowrun games by Harebrained Schemes are cyberpunk, but with magic. They hit pretty much every mark except the Open World bit. (Dragonfall & Hong Kong do allow chosing the order of sub-plot and all offer different ways to complete different scenarios though)

  • Anachronox shows it's age graphics-wise, but is still one of the best Western-made JRPGs. Little to no character customization though.

Adding one not added yet, the Bard's Tale (Series).
It's not everyone's, but voice and jokes are quite enjoyable.

Divinity Original Sin fits all the requested criterias and is very friendly towards new players.
If pauseable real-time combat is OK, Dragon Age: Origins would be my first choice (also you can pick it up for only ~5-10$).

I really enjoy games that mix technology with the fantasy setting and even though they are not unconditional recommendations, Arcanum (dated graphic), Wizardry VIII (can be a bit tough in the beginning) and Shadowrun (not really Open World) are among my all time favorits when it comes to rpg games.

Neverwinter Nights - I'm surprised no one suggested it yet, or I'm blind. Maybe I have my genres mixed up it seems to me it would fit almost all of your criteria perfectly. Metacritic

Edit: Maybe it's because it's not available on Steam? It's available at a decent price from GOG at the moment.

Then there's Neverwinter Nights 2 at a bit higher higher price but somewhat prettier graphics. Also not on Steam though.

Thanks and bump :) (and I just wishlisted a few of the suggestions myself). Avernum 4, 5 and 6 are older rpg's, turn-based, with massive worlds to explore. They can be linear at the start, where you are essentially getting gear and some quests under your belt but once out in the main game world you can wander quite a way (to your death if you are not careful :)
