So after like 20 years attached to keyboard and hating any changes on my gaming style I ordered a controller, which I said I would never play on. Who knows, maybe I will become PS5 or VR player one day.
Can you recommend me some easier games on which it is good learn to play with controller? I am not sure how it is compatibility, it is black and has some buttons like arrows, AYBX and some plain black.

Do you play with controller?

View Results
[KB&M team] Hell no, it is weird to attach that console thing to pc.
[Controller team] Of course, I can't even beat Dark souls without it (or can't beat it anyway).
[Sometimes] I don't need to cry on discussions, when game doesn't support controller.
[I never play games] Ugh, playing? I am just alt account abusing that site to get free games for ArchieFarm
[Potato] I am just laying under ground waiting to get turned into fries.

I like to use a mouse in most games, especially first person, point and click, and anything where I can control the camera. I use a controller in side scrolling platformers or other 2D games.

I am currently playing No Man's Sky with mouse and Cuphead (not easy at all) with a controller.

Edit: Here are some of my favorite games that I played with a controller:
Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons - You control 2 characters at the same time. On a controller, each character is controlled with an analog stick to move and a shoulder button to interact. The game itself is not difficult, but it will take some time to get used to the controls.
Fez
Dust: An Elysian Tail
South Park: The Stick Of Truth - Don't remember if I played this with a controller, but it should be very easy to play with a controller and I enjoyed the game a lot.

Trackball I used just once in my life. It has been on seminary at Zittau in Germany where I took lessons of modelling in NX program and they had there these as option instead mouse. It wasn't able to work with, every touch apparently meant "zoom 1000000%"

That is the thing they had, probably not trackball you meant

filter by controller support, sort by user rating, just play

i play most console ports with a controller
maybe start with side scrolling games like Guns, Gore & Cannoli, Guacamelee!. classic console games
then, fighting and racing games if you like them
its great when you want to lay back an relax

I played Guaccamole championship sometime ago and haven't enjoyed it much. But maybe I should try disney old games. Some of these have similar gameplay, so it can worth a shot.
Racing games definitely won't be a thing.

I am team Keyboard and Mouse. I ordered the Steam Deck. I'm looking forward to it. Looks like it will be very customizable. I like that. Will I like it better? Will I use both? Will I go back? I have no idea. But I'm looking forward to finding out.

I don't have any recommendations but I will be checking back to see what everyone thinks are good game to play with one.

Steam deck was great idea. Since I own many games on steam, I would buy that than some switch or how is called that thing which would want me buy extra games just for it to be able play on it. Sadly I will need to invest into good computer as I doubt I would be able work on steam deck. But I would definitely consider buying portable gaming machine for 500€ which can run Control with any problems. I am going to wait on some reviews, haven't even checked what it would cost in my country, but it will be definitely less than decent gaming computer.

The reserve is cheap. And will refund as steam wallet if I change my mind. I did not order for a few days so I'm stuck waiting till at least Q2 of next year. There will be many months worth of reviews by then so I have lots of time to change my mind if something is wrong with it. But I'm not worried. I'm sure it will be very good.

Having a ton of things already on steam certainly is a big part of it. I was instantly tempted by it when I first heard of it because of this reason. Then when I actually checked out some of the media around it a few days later, I knew I wanted one. I only wish I had checked further into it right away instead of ignoring it for a few days. lol.

Generally, platformers/metroidvania type of games are good to get used to pad.
Personally, I would recommend either Ori and the Will of the Wisps or Blasphemous..

I'm horrible at controller gaming. But this little platformer is easy to get into.. Castle of Illusion.
Well, any platformer I guess. But I remember liking that one for it's simplicity when I was getting used to the ps4 controller.

I enjoyed that game a lot ..... on a keyboard. Good to know this type of game is great on a controller as well. I like platformers.

If you wanna get good at games that support controller, I recommend playing some third person games. Things like the Squeenix games: Hitman, Deus Ex, Tomb Raider. Enslaved. Or if you have a chance to own/play, Horizon Zero Dawn. I play most of my games with a controller, with the exception of some first-person games.

Deux ex I have now installed, may worth a shot. HZD is long time on my wishlist and I already was thinking to buy it, but I am afraid a bit, as my gaming laptop was licking minimum requerements and I heard port is bad. Last sale I saw minimum requirements was pushed down, so I have no idea what I am waiting for 🤔 Maybe to try it out when it will become Epic freebie and then I will buy it on steam.

Also, third person games like Yooka-Laylee, Crash, Spyro I would argue actually need to be played with a controller ;)
Anyway, have fun :)

I played Dead Cells and Guacamele using the controller. They play out smooth and much better than keyboard and mouse.

2D games are what I'd start with. I didn't use a controller until 2 years ago and the first games I tried it on are the 2D ones (Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Rogue Legacy etc) and love it with those vs kb+m.

Although I still prefer kb+m for 3D games. I still have not gotten used to turning camera with analog stick. Feels clunky.

i think that any game that is possible to play slow (sort of fallout4,astroneer,deus ex,prey etc.) is good for learn play with controller ,

vice versa fast games (runners like sonicc or fastpaced tc.) or games with quicktimes\timing attack\defend or that require to holds buttons or push buttons repetitively fast is not
(and they also damage the solder parts of thumbstick controllers or buttons very fast too that sadly in most of controllers it's not interchangeable )

Personally, I haven't really played consistently with a controller since the good ol' N64 days and pretty much sucked with using them since. Although I do have the Steam controller, which I will pull out occasionally when I want to stream my PC to the TV, I will only use it with games that don't require a boatload of button presses and easy to map like racing/kart games (incl. Audiosurf 1 and 2, and Riff Racer), TemTem, Diablo 1-3, Telltale games and VN's, or sitting VR games with gamepad support. Console ports like Crash Bandicoot, Sonic, and other classic style 3D platformers and old school sidescrollers can also be easier to play with a controller.

I recommend you to play Guacamelle. Very interesting game, especially in coop

I took a look at your gamepage.

Games I played (and liked) with controller:
Evoland
Figment
Moonlighter
Wildfire

Other suggestions:
Terraria
Tomb Raider games
Children of Morta
Forager
Ghost of a Tale
Minoria
Smoke and Sacrifice

I personally use a nintendo pro controller with my pc and love using it. Sometimes it's easier to use a controller (like when movement is only for a qwerty keyboard and not adjustable to azerty) But sometimes it's easier to use keyboard and mouse.

It depends on how much of the keys you can adjust.

Have fun!

I do not even know how I got Mortal combat into my library, probably some mystery pack from Fanatical. Side fighting games I barely enjoy. Maybe I should put into description recommendations for women gamers. 😅

English is my second language, so it is possible. To me it sounds like "go play tabletop games if you don't like fighting". So I would rather avoid further commenting on that theme.

+1 to any platformer / Metroidvania recommendations (trying to remember the name of Klei's ninja stealth game).

Fighting games, for being able to slide across the D-Pad, but that will take practice.

A good arcade driving game for getting to experience controlling a car without being full-gas/full-brake/hard jerky turning all the time. (A dedicated wheel is always a better option, but for arcade drivers instead of sims, it shouldn't matter.)

A good 3D platformer/adventure with auto/locking aim would also be good. Something like Prince of Persia, Assassin's Creed, or maybe even the new Tomb Raider games (though m/kb is probably better in the last one).

...

I also used to be a die-hard kb/mouse person. CS1.6, TFC, TF2 days. And for a good shooter game, the mouse is still always better, imho. But I've opened up. Controllers are good, too. Sometimes better, even. Use whichever input option makes sense for whatever game you're playing.

I feel like controllers are best suited towards fighting games and racing games. I also think that the Nier series works better with controller, and I love both of the games!

A Doom Eternal dev said he prefers to play the game with a controller, maybe Doom isn't bad either. (I personally would never play a shooter with controller but who knows.)

I started play Doom recently, but stopped soon, when I stuck in second mission next to yellow game 😅 Hope I am not the only one who isn't enjoying that game. I thought I played old one and do not remember that extremely slow moving. Just corridor and shooting.

It's not for everyone, I guess. But now that you mention it, I used to press the Shift button in the beginning (which was "walk" I think, lol) because I also found the Slayer a bit too slow but with time I got used to it. I think you're faster in Doom Eternal, its fights are also a bit more chaotic / fast-paced, but there are platforming / parkouring parts that some may find boring / uninteresting.

I could also recommend the Batman: Arkham games and Shadow of Mordor / War. (Although I'm not sure how hard it would be to aim with the bow, lol.)

Oh, thanks, I noticed shift makes it even slower. Doesn't you know any tip for run also? I tried Alt as Skyrim had run on it (which I realized after 4 years of playing). And also I noticed my mouse is almost not moving in menu, even when I push it on my dpi limits, is there any options to increase it? In game it is alright.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sorry, can't remember if it has mouse sensitivity for only the menu. I think there is no way to run (and if there is I'm an idiot and completed the game without it, lol), but you can increase your speed during battle with 2 runes. (One makes you move faster for a short while after performing a glory kill and with the other you can perform glory kills from further (which is kinda like moving faster).)

As you said you might buy South park: The stick of truth I would recommend that one. Pretty simple to play with controller.

A short hike and Alba: A Wildlife Adventure is also pretty relaxing games to play wth controller.

Edit: Would also recommend Cat Quest 1 and 2.

For me personally I prefer KBM and use controller only if the game 'feels' better with it.
I enjoyed playing Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair on controller. MGRR as well. And other games too. So pretty much platformers and slashers for me.

Looking at your library, Dragon Age II and Inquisition are probably better on gamepad and easy to learn and you have plenty of playtime in them. For things with less time, Borderlands might be good and Tomb Raider also. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West was great when I played it on an Xbox 360 so you should have no problems there and it's one of my favorite games ever, I think you'll love it.

Maybe Thief and Little Nightmares but I have less experience with those.

And yes, buy South Park first then Horizon Zero Dawn and Tomb Raider last when it comes to difficulty learning a gamepad. All are recommended.

One finger Death punch.
Rampage Knights
Neon Abyss
Everhood
Cuphead
South Park

I prefer KBM as well especially shooters but some games are just perfect for controller as well

I bought my first controller a month ago (xbox series controller) and for me the biggest plus is, overall it is more relaxed to play.

When I sit on computer, with kb+m I always feel little more competitive, and overall less relax. With controller, I feel like I really play for fun, thats all.

btw, I think Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance can be a good option. It was the first game I played and I had fun.
