Can someone explain me the interest of trading cards? They are so many good games out there, probably a lot in your backlog too, why should I spend my time with this instead of enjoying GTA, XCOM, Skyrim, Hotline Miami? It sounds very "casual-Facebook-like" for me, just to get a better background on my profile or badges... But I may be wrong, so explain me please :S

Cards = Profit. If you don't care about how your profile looks.

Some people enjoy vanity, whether that's a new profile background, new badge, higher level, etc. You certainly don't have to participate if you don't want to. I personally don't care about badges or levels, so I'm really only using this Trading Card Beta as a way of getting more Steam Wallet. I've made 80-90 dollars already just from selling cards. If other people want to pay ridiculous amounts for vanity, I have no problem profiting from them. It means free games for me.

They are virtual, so there's no real value to them, except the value that collectors "assign" to them.
Thus monetary value gets added to them and you could sell them on the Steam market if you don't care about them (prices are regulated by supply and demand).
If you're not interested in the meta game of collecting / trading / selling cards, you can just ignore them - it's just another virtual collectible good, like a TF2 hat, a Dota 2 weapon, a WoW pet, ...

Ok, thanks a lot for your answers! I understand your point of view, but it only works if people buy this stuff... And I'm really surprised there is enough demand in the market for it to be viable!

There are a handful of people who make level 5 badges + a foil badge of every single game added to the beta. They're at level 60 the last time I checked. I'd say they probably spend $100 or more on cards for each game. You show any sort of statistic and there will be people who obsess over them, such as achievements, contributor value, comments, etc.

I got a Defender's Quest booster last night, shortly after they added the update.

The previous number included DLC and F2P games in your game count. This number is more accurate.

Their current focus right now is Transistor, and seeing how the game handles, I certainly can't blame them for that. I'd prefer a top notch game over a set of cards in terms of priority.
Besides, they said they haven't ruled out the possibility, so we still might have them. Maybe even with Transistor cards, who knows ?

I don't understand the booster packs. Is it saying you can only get 1 booster pack a week? I also don't understand what it means by using steam in the last week. I can't just start steam up and play the game to earn a booster pack?

My freshly read tea leaves tell me that tomorrow's games will include Mark of the Ninja and Incredipede.

That's how market economy works. Sell your cards while you still can. With booster packs and half a dozen games getting added every week they won't be worth anything in a few months. Well, not much more than a copy of Dota 2 at least. I wouldn't be surprised to see regular cards for >0.1$ in a few weeks or maybe months.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nah. They'll never go that low. Valve has a motivation to regulate the supply to keep prices affordable enough to keep trading high, but high enough to continue receiving a good amount of money coming in from market fees. I think most common cards will probably bottom out at around $0.25 or so.

Many cards are already that low or even lower (just trying to get rid of my Offspring and GOI cards). Compared to the prices cards had when I joined the TC beta a few weeks ago (when there were only a few games that had cards, mostly Valve games) that's a huge price drop. And how should Valve regulate the supply? You get a fixed amount of card drops per game if you own the game, there is nothing to regulate (unless you wanted to reduce the amount of drops, but I doubt that would happen). Booster packs seem to be pretty rare admittedly, but still. I guess some iconic games will have higher prices (CS:GO will have a higher price than Offspring Fling), but for most people it's all about the Steam level. So the more possible cards there are to raise your level, the lower their value will be. Maybe >0.1$ is a bit low, but I doubt the average card will be worth more than 0.1$ - 0.2$ in a few months.

First off, trying to dump your GoI and Offspring cards right now is foolish. The prices for them will most likely be higher in a week than they are currently. Just look at how low the Serious Sam cards were on release day and how they've slowly been climbing since. And again, Valve will regulate the frequency of booster drops so that the price will remain affordable yet profitable. They control the supply and have zero incentive to let prices drop that low. It won't happen. This isn't a free market, it's a regulated one.

If I get a cent or two less than I would get in a week doesn't matter to me. If I would have done the same with my CS:GO cards I would have gotten 50% less for them now by the way. Overall the card prices will inevitably drop the more games get cards and the more people have access to the trading cards. The question is how many people actually care about their Steam level. I doubt many people do, only the hardcore Steam crowd thinks it's great to pay money for a badge in their profile. Now if I'm right it is only natural that the more cards there are, the easier it is to get them for the few people who actually want them (few compared to the total amount). Booster packs may be rare and Valve will not make them more common, but this is not the main 'problem' anyway since every person gets a fixed amount of drops (it still adds to the devaluation though since there were no boosters before). It is pretty obvious what's happening, just look how the average price of cards evolved since the trading cards beta started. It went down, down and then it went down even more. Some small fluctuations don't make a difference in the grand scheme of things. And the trading cards beta will end soon, which means there will be a lot more people with cards who don't have any interest in keeping them.

No need to get defensive only because you run out of arguments. We were talking about Steam trading cards, so calm down. It's all about supply and demand, and that's exactly what happens here. With every game added there is more supply (cards you can use to increase your Steam level), but the same demand (people who care about their Steam level). Plus people who were interested in trading cards already joined the beta, now all the other people will get added once it leaves beta. Some of them may not know about the cards yet, but most simply won't care and will sell their cards. Do you really think a random trading card will be worth as much as it is now when there are 1000+ games that have trading cards you can choose from? And all of the 50 million Steam users, most of which won't care about those useless cards and badges, has access to them? Sorry, but that's wishful thinking. Anyway, only time will tell. That's always the problem with discussions like this one, in half a year neither me nor you will care about the outcome anymore.

Well, Half Life 2, Portal 2 or Don't Starve cards price only drop lower and lower...
I guess we might see 2 huge price increases - when beta ends new people MIGHT want to grab some badges. And other could be if Valve would announce that depending on number of badges you'll get additional price drops during sales...

Booster packs: Booster packs are additional cards for games that will drop periodically. Anyone who has collected all the trading card drops they can for a game and have used Steam in the last week may receive one of these booster packs. These packs contain three additional cards for the game, and may contain foils. If you receive a booster, you will get a "1 new item in your inventory" alert.
Game Collector Badge: There's a new badge which will grant you XP based on how many games you have in your Steam library. This badge replaces the "100 XP for having at least one product registered" message at the bottom of the badges page.

A little Steam trading cards FAQ:
Note: Most questions are already answered in the official FAQ
Q: How many / Which Steam games drop cards?
A: See official FAQ, though this thread seems a bit more complete ;)
You can also use the advanced options in the Steam store search
Q: How many cards does game X drop?
A: Each game drops 50% (rounded up for odd numbers) of the total card number, it's also part of the official FAQ.
Q: What cards / emotes / backgrounds / arts are available for game X?
A: See either steamcardexchange.net, Steam Trading Cards Wiki or SG TC Art Collection (discontinued)
Q: What are Mystery Cards and how do I get them?
A: It's not sure what they do, but you can get them from crafting badges since the latest updated (July 3rd) more info
Edit: Mystery cards turned into Steam Summer Getaway Trading Cards on July 11th.
Q: What are Steam Summer Getaway Trading Cards?
A: Summer cards FAQ
Q: So now I know how to get cards, but how do I get backgrounds / emotes / XP to level up my Steam account?
A: By crating a badge (a full set of cards, see official FAQ)
Q: I've hit my card drop limit, how do I get more cards?
A: You don't. The only way to get more cards is by trading or buying them on the market. Exception: TF2 and Dota2 - you will get one more card drop for every $9 spent on the ingame store. However there are plans to improve this (see next Q/A entry).
EDIT: The recent update (June 18th) introduced Booster Packs
Q: Where are my TF2/Dota2/Warframe/other F2P trading card game cards?
A: You only get the cards for those 2 F2P games, if you either were TF2 premium or bought something from the Dota2 store before the beta started. Now you have to spend money in the ingame store to get card drops. For a more detailled information you should check out the games "How do I earn card drops?" link on your badges page or visit the game forum.
Q: Will I get card drops of game X, that's supposed to drop cards, if I don't own the game but play it during a free weekened?
A: Nope, Valve is not stupid, no freebies for you.
Q: How much is my card worth?
A: Check the market, the prices are changing all the time, depending on supply and demand - simple economics.
Q: I have a question that's not answered in this FAQ.
A: Well, that's not a question per se, but chances are your question is already covered in the official FAQ.
