I'm really surprised to discover this place has so many like minded people. The movement is certainly growing; eating vegan is a lot easier than it used to be. Too bad a lot of the companies that produce simple vegan alternatives also produce animal products, though.

That definitely splits the vegans into two schools of thought, doesn't it? I generally adhere to the strict ethical vegan standards; my choice in not consuming animals isn't based on dietary reasons. I believe animals should be left alone and most of us are fortunate enough to live in an era and in a place where the exploitation of animals is no longer necessary. I'm not militant about it or anything, but I do think that...while steps in the right directions are probably good, if these steps are too small they are counter-productive to the cause. It's like, when black people in America wanted equal rights, they didn't stop when they were just considered human beings and not 3/5ths of a person anymore. If vegans become complacent in the slow crawl to a better world for all living creatures on Earth, progress will grind to a halt. We need to find a happy medium between baby steps and terrorism.

well look at it like this: if you support a company making vegan products they might improve them and/or make more. if you do not supoort them they might be discontinued. I wonder then do you mean things like the before mentioned oreo's cookies? since they are Vegan, but since the factory makes diffrent things it Could have traces of Milk etc?

It's not about if the food I'm eating has traces of milk, or whatever. I'm the kind of vegan that will eat animal products if there's no option. I think the trendy term for it nowadays is "freegan." For example; the other day, my girlfriend and I were in a vegetarian restaurant and I ordered a certain food and asked for no cheese, but they put cheese in it anyway. Well, if I sent it back, it'd probably just be thrown away, so I ate it.

I think the most important thing is to remember that we're all mortal, clumsy creatures and veganism is about making an effort. One must understand that unless we're meticulously growing and harvesting our own food, we're going to be responsible for the deaths and misery of other creatures, no matter how ethical we think our choices are. Wheat threshers carve up hundreds of mice and bugs and even deer that are found in the, say, spaghetti noodles we might buy.

But that's all unfortunate indirect consequences of mass-producing food for an entire nation. Still, at least that's unintentional. It breaks my heart whenever I see yet another video of people abusing, beating, raping animals who were born in a cage, lived their entire lives in a cage, and will die in a cage just so we fat fucking lazy human beings can have a larger selection to what we eat. Fuck, it's depressing.
