Depends on the game and on what your are accustomed to.
I use kb+m for almopst everything.
Then I bought a wired 360 pad for those games that really required analogic movement OR were badly ported control-wise. The d-pad is not the best possible, but overall I like the pad and I can recommend it.
I also used to have a force-feedback wheel for racing games, but since I don't have enough gaming time to play proper simulations anymore, I'm now playing simcades on pad.

My first choice would be a mouse and keyboard since FPS is my favorite genre.

My second choice would be a wireless X360 controller with the Durazno XInput wrapper. That little program allows me to customize the controller more, most notably the deadzone if the game doesn't allow that natively.

Everything can be played with the mouse and keyboard. People say some games are meant to be played using a controller but those are the hypocrite peasants(stick with your boxes and controllers. stay away from the Master Race)

I agree that every game can be played with mouse and keyboard but why being so ignorant to not try an alternative? I love it to play some games with analog controls.

Yeah most sport games and fighters are a real blast to play with keyboard/mouse... And you call others hypocrite peasants :x

It's 'master race' because we have freedom, like the possibility to use loads of different input devices. For shooters I'll use my keyboard and mouse, for fighters like Mortal Kombat I'll use a controller, a joystick for flight sims and for race games I'll use my wheel. That's 'master race'.

Exactly. This is why the PC is superior. And PCs have had gamepads and all other types of controllers long before console ports were common.

Yeah alright, sorry us REAL PC gamers have been using controllers for years, yes even in the early 90's.

You're a joke.

Proper flight sims.

You need the keyboard and mouse, but to play them well you also need at least a stick with a throttle. You can get away with a console pad, barely.

Upgraded my old 360 controller with the new XBone controller yesterday. Amazing piece but the driver still needs some work.

xbox 360 controller for third person games. For FPS games I like to use my splitfish shark chuck control for movment and my logitech G3 mouse for aiming.

I've had 3 of those Logitech controllers, and they are very nice, for a limited time. Eventually all of them started developing issues though. On one of them, the left analog stick stopped working, on another one of the face buttons would randomly activate on its own, and on another the right analog stick lost it's "springiness" and would not return to center when released. Also the lack of analog triggers kinda sucked.

Swapped to a 360 controller about a year ago and it's been great.

Not sure about the higher end logitech controllers, but I'd avoid the cheaper ones. I've never had problems with controllers breaking down before using those things... I went through 4 of them. I used them 1-2 hours per day and they averaged 6 months before experiencing problems. One was a F310, actually.

All 3 of these were their top of the line wireless dualshock controllers (what they call the F710 now)

The F710/510/310 do have the analog triggers though. Feature-wise they are identical to a 360 controller. (Plus they allow you to switch to DirectX mode for older games) I've had my F510 for over a year now and it still works like it did on day 1. Granted, my primary input controller for most games is KB+M but it still sees a lot of usage.

I have Sweex Wireless Controller, and it's a piece of shit. It's like it was made for babies, it's miniature, the dead zones are diferent on the sticks, right stick is always reverted, and it eats batteries. A lot. What's the usual price for the xbox controller, and do I just buy IT, and plug it, or there's like a windows version of it?

Any ol' standard Xbox 360 wired controller** should be plug n' play on any modern Windows PC. Any ol' Xbox 360 wireless controller should work as well, as long as you have a receiver (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2) plugged in for it to sync to. If these don't work right out of the box, you may just need to download/install drivers for them and you'll be good to go.

Wired controller would probably run you $20-30... a wireless controller probably closer to $40 alone, and up to $60 with the receiver.

** A wireless controller with the play and charge pack (battery pack chargeable via USB) not included.

The only logical choice is you ask me is Xbox 360 controller. It has the best compatibility with Windos games so far (kinda makes sense).

I have used the logitech F310, and i found it very uncomfortable. It's kinda small and I felt the trigger is very hard as compared to 360 controller of course. I'd always go with 360 controller.

Xbox One wireless controller, works with every single game that worked with the Xbox 360 one. It sends data FASTER and force feedback is much better; and it is so much more comfortable than the Xbox 360.

All you will need is the driver from Microsoft and a Micro-USB cable (it can't be used wirelessly for now on PC).

Xbox 360 controller for Windows with a wireless receiver.

The Xbox controllers are easily the most supported... as you'll still find an odd game/developer here or there that doesn't "officially" support any other PC gamepad, including the Logitech's. And if you go wireless, you can support up to 4 players on just one USB slot. Worked like a charm the handful of times I actually got people crowded around my PC for some gaming.
