Game of the tournament so far!? I dunno about that.

Both of the US games have been epic, but not always the most skillfully played. Although, I'm not sure which games have been better (0-0 draws are automatically disqualified from this discussion).

Of course 0 - 0 draws aren't good but you mustn't have watched that many games to think that was the best? I would assume not. I'll agree its up there though.

I've watched about 2/3-3/4 of the games. I even watched the stinker of Iran/Nigeria. Fortunately, I skipped Japan/Greece. I'd be curious to know what you thought was the best game, though. A lot of the games have either been domination or someone playing above their level (Netherlands/Austrailia).

What do mean by someone playing above their level?

I'm not sure that you're getting the reference.

Why bother risking injury and suspension when a draw benefits both sides? Play out a 0-0 draw, win-win. Germany tops the group, USA come in second. Portugal-Ghana game becomes irrelevant.

I am getting the reference... West Germany Vs Austria. 1982. The Austria reference doesn't really work if you want to get technical about it. Since you need a draw, and the Austria game finished, as you well know, 1-0. I thought your reference was obvious actually. But whatever, I had fun. I'm not sure you're getting my reference.

True but the reference was more in the spirit of working together to achieve a favorable outcome for all parties involved. Guess we'll see what will happen later!

Can anyone explain to me what happens now regarding the USA? How do they advance to the 16 team and what would have to happen for them to be eliminated?

If they lose and ghana or portugal beat them in goal difference supposing one of them wins their game. They will go out if this happens, otherwise they are through.

That's assuming that Ghana or Portugal wins, of course.

If Ghana wins by 1 and the US loses by no more than 1, than the goal differential will be 0. Then it goes to the second tiebreaker, which is total goals scored. If that ends up being tied, the third tiebreaker is Head-to-Head, which US would win, by virtue of having already defeated Ghana.

If Portugal wins and the US loses, Portugal would have to win by enough to offset the deep goal differential they already have (or the US would have to get blown out like Portugal did).

If Portugal and Ghana draw, then the US is in. If Germany and the US draw, the US is in. If the US wins, the US is in.

So basically, so long as the Portugal/Ghana game doesn't end in a winner by a large margin, the US is in alright shape.

I thought it was odd that the ref didn't even seem interested in looking at the guy's shoulder. I guess since the ref didn't see it happen, he couldn't definitively say that it wasn't an accident, especially since Suarez went down grabbing his teeth.

Well maybe, he bite himelf. ;( Turns out people did even worse things just to win. But seriously: the referee wasn't expecting a bite and didn't see it for 100% and that way the FIFA can ban him afterwards now.

I was just reading about that game the other day and how only one guy had the pictures proving that the flare missed him. Great read.

On a side note, I love the upbeat music that video ends with. It must be their standard sign-off music, but its so completely inappropriate for the situation.
