In Poland, where knowledge of English is flaky at best, most people pronounce file extensions with the native language sounds. So we always had gif with a hard g, but on the other hand we also have "yot-peg" or even "yot-pe-e-gye" whenever someone sees "jpeg" which isn't that good :-P. Don't get me even started on html :-)

The rule with acronyms is that they are pronounced in accordance with the letters' "regular" sounds rather than the sounds used in the words each letter represents. Hence, hard G instead of soft G.
