I started when the 1st C&C was brand new, I loved it and still have the disc somewhere. If your ok with dated graphics and want some of the (sometimes silly) story start with the 1st one. I loved the Red alert split as much if not more and use to mod that to no end. C&C 3 and beyond they changed the style and game play (not all for the better.) It's a fun trip but some people can't deal with the old graphics.

Start the series... with C&C. It is a classic, it kickstarted the whole series, and I played through it the first time only a year ago, too. You simply have to defeat Kane in his jugoslavian fortress to enjoy all the later titles.

Nostalgia definitely plays its part, but I'd still say that the gameplay holds up without a doubt. The way the gameplay and the missions are designed... I have never seen similar work in modern titles, with Starcraft/Warcraft being close relatives, but not quite.
Nowadays RTS seems to be all about spamming the right units to counter your opponent's other unit spam, and micromanaging your stuff in the most efficient manner, capturing predetermined points on the map and bland stuff like that. I've never enjoyed a RTS as much as I did the entire C&C franchise.

All of them are still playable, though you can tell that they did listen to some player feedback. For an example, while C&C 1 and the first Red Alert are very similar, there are some details that makes Red Alert more fun, like the fact that harvesters unload their resources far faster. Red Alert 2 is probably the easiest one to get into, but going back to the earlier games from RA2 will make you miss some of the quality of life things that it has to offer. The first C&C is also probably the hardest game in the series.

The only one I would recommend against is Tiberian Twilight. It's just not very fun.

But but you can't capture the harvesters with the buildings then! D:
I think it was a franchise-specific decision, seeing as Tiberian Sun has the same connected harvesters (that can be captured while unloading) while RA2 followed RA1 and kept the instant unloads.

diskettes, really? Base install took at least 30Mb and all FMVs would be missing

The complete collection on Origin includes it btw.

The Gold edition is just a different version of the first game, so I would argue that OP has the first game. Also, Covert Operations comes with the collection that OP has. Only Sole Survivor is missing.

Personally, I was never a fan of the original C&C or Red Alert. But I loved RA2, Tiberium Wars and RA3. I haven't really given Tiberian Wars or Generals a chance and Twilight, while nowhere near as bad as most would have you believe, is more of a spinoff than a standard C&C game.

Renegade was decent.

You clearly haven't tried it on Brutal difficulty. Believe me, you'll find it challenging at least.

Just play the entire series in chronological order. They're all great.
I really don't see the point in starting at RA2 unless you want gameplay to completely trump story.
Granted, C&C (1) + CO -> Red Alert + CS/Aftermath -> C&C Tiberian Sun + Firestorm -> Renegade are fairly old, but if you don't play them to establish the story, you're missing out on half of the series.
If you want to play a stand-alone, Generals + ZH is perfect for that, since it is not attached to any of the other storylines. It also is the only game in the series to use only worker units for base building (and generally plays differently than the others).
If you only want the newer games, then Red Alert 2 + YR -> C&C 3 + KW -> Red Alert 3 is fair enough, but I still think you'll miss out on story, especially for C&C. The RA series were designed to be more lighthearted so if you just want the thrill I suppose that could work. They still work decently even if you haven't played the older ones. Personally I find RA3 is going overboard with the units and their abilities.
Avoid C&C 4 like the plague. It's the worst disappointment in gaming history and ruined a 15-year old franchise with the crappiest ending, broke the gameplay, poor excuse of a campaign that offers no versatility, completely messed up unit system, no more base or resource management, no recognizable link to any prior title whatsoever... it's so bad I refuse to acknowledge it as an official title.

Indeed, it was awesome how it was like a FPS take on the details of all the units and structures from the original C&C, and its multiplayer spawned a similar mod for Red Alert which I also played for several years.

Playing C&C and RA in this times sure would be a pain in the a$$, those game run on DOS, but for truly fans, is mandatory to play this franchaise since the first game. Sadly the las Command & Conquer is pretty bad (one of the reason i hate a bit more EA) and you can skip this one. Also if you like Tiberiun Sun you can try Twisted Insurrection Mod.
Remember that C&C and RA are diferent realities of the same universe. That mean two diferent time lines.

i think C&C Generals is the best, played it for hours. with the DLC it is even more fun :)

Generals cam be consider as a 3th time line, since dont involved NOD/Kane or Soviets, is more like based on modern wars (war for oil =( ) that is why you capture oil instead gathering tiberium or gold.

Oh I almost forgot! If you decide to play the original C&C and RA..
don't forget the hidden Dinosaur missions in C&C and the hidden Ant missions in RA (requires CS expansion)!!
(No I'm not joking, just Google it, they are fairly easy to unlock, but remember to play the actual campaigns first or you'll be WAY confused)
