I rarely buy either unless it's something I know will last me a long time. And my friend only wants to play MMO's so that consumes most of my gaming time.

I don't have problems with piracy. The developers and publishers do.

I used to pirate games and software. But when I get old, I'd rather buy them directly instead of wasting time to crack games.

There's no necessary correlation between how one chooses to spend money on games and whether one chooses to engage in piracy.

I support good devs when I can, alas, my circumstances for the past several years have been... less than stellar. That being said, I also stopped buying nearly as many games (even when I could) once nearly everything became download only. I've bought games (Empire: Total War) that had a disc yet required me to download the entire game via Steam. Another person I know bought a few new boxed (at the time) games that, when opened, only had a piece of paper on there with a code.

I miss the days when I could simply pull the disc out of the case, slap it into the disc tray and install w/o having to download anything. Times change, for better or for worse. I hope you like that answer in the form of a short ramble.

Cheers!

Game boxes that take up your space, cd's/dvd's that get so scratched they become unreadable, no or slow internet to download the latest patches. Yeah not sure why you would miss that.

Back in the day patches weren't really necessary most of the time as most games shipped in a much more finished state. As a result slow internet didn't really matter that much, everything you needed was on the disc and game activation didn't require the net either.

The space thing is/was a bit of an issue, however, back in the day (post floppy disk era), most games came in jewel cases—even if some games (e.g., Baldur's Gate, Star Wars Whatever, etc) were in jewel cases designed to hold two to five CDs they still took up less space than the DVD cases (a la double-wide movie cases). Also, some games (or you could just buy them) could hold multiple DVDs in their double-wide movie cases (either stacked or with hard-plastic "pages").

In addition, most games didn't need patches to play from beginning to end until the mid-2000s and, even so, downloading 200 to 400 megabyte patches was, more or less, a non-issue.

Lastly, I've never allowed for circumstances to come to pass that would scratch my discs. ;)

Cheers!

PS: I just realized that I'm responding to jiggakills who responded to the guy I thought I was responding to, lol. Oh well, maybe Lugum will read it regardless. Shrugs

I read it, and i know growing up in the nineties most games weren't so much needed for patches, but more also in mind if today's games would still be sold on dvd's, then it would certainly be the case.

I got a good internet connection, downloading goes fast, so personally i don't miss it, i only miss the games as they were back then. (Why i pretty much have all retro games on steam).

But to each their own. :)

Something about hearing swine used as an insult always makes me smile idk why.
Interesting point and guilty as charged for liking ez games. :D I don't really have any thoughts towards people pirating games. I personally don't pirate but never put much thought or looked into it tbh. That said I do watch people play games on youtube fairly often and one could argue it's not much different, particularly for more linear games like Firewatch. I'll be excited for a game, see someone who I love play it and think "well I might as well just watch them play it instead".

I like bundles, what can I say? I buy some other stuff on sale, but rarely full price. Last full price game I bought think was Spore, and that broke the habit for me. Some higher cost titles I bought past 6 months or so on sale include Subnautica, a whole bunch of Crusader King 2 stuff, Undertale, Empyrion, City Skylines, Assassin's Creed Black Flag, and Prison Architect. But of all of those I've only played Subnautica maybe an hour. I want to play them all, and I'll likely get to most of them someday. It just takes longer than I expect, especially with all the cool stuff I win on steamgifts thrown in the mix - like recently I won Hue and it was a very fun game.

It seems I might only play 20-30% of what I buy, but I attribute it to totally underestimating how long it'll take to play a game. I totally plan to open up my library one day and click on something random - "let's see what this is". Like just the other day I started playing GTA Vice City from 2003.

I probably do like what you'd call easy gameplay / no gameplay. I do like walking sims. Really hard games aren't fun for me (Hotline Miami for example is a recent one that simply destroyed me - like never even beating the first level - who am I kidding - I never got past the third guy ;-) INK was another hard game I couldn't get into. Alot of games I'll start and they won't grab me, and I'll set them aside. Like recently I started Stronghold HD and totally expected to like it, but it's going to take a bit to grow on me I think.

I never had problems with piracy. It was easy enough and "socially accepted" when I didn't have the money. Now that I do have enough money to buy games, I only buy what I can afford. Since nowadays time is the limiting factor I'll get what seems to be the best enjoyment for the least amount of money. So why not bundles?

It's been many years since I pirated a game. I'm a man of limited means, so I buy mainly on big discounts. Thanks for the giveaways!

  1. Piracy isn't a problem for me, just because... Goddammit! Why nobody is making demos anymore?! How the hell do I know if my wife will be able to play Killing Floor 2 on my 6yo laptop? :C

  2. I admit it, I enjoyed the piss-easy progression and no gameplay of ABZU ._.

  3. Wait, you're telling us this $1 tier wasn't worth it?! :O

Holy shit! dd426 was impressive. I wish I could train more on it but lately I get dizzy on everything that's more fast-paced than a point&click adventure u_u

Actually, a significant portion of the games in my Steam library didn't come from a bundle/trade/giveaway. That said, my budget doesn't allow me to buy $50+ games very often, so almost all my games were bought during some sort of sale.
