Hello, first i won't tell you what is the giveaway, it's rare but for this one i will just keep the name for me. It's unbundled.

So tonight i would like to talk you about french tarot.
It's a cards game that people played here, with some complicated rules.
The cards are all beautiful and i love them all, because they have funny illustrations. Tarot uses all the cards :
1-10 + jack + knight + queen + king + fool + (and it's interesting here) 21 special cards
Even when people don't know to play tarot here, they often own a tarot cards game, or use some of the cards to play something else.

Here it's generational. The old people played an even more complicated game that i don't know to play : belote.
The older sometimes played tarot. And the younger often just know poker, because poker is really fun and the rules are easy to understand.

I'm from Y generation, older teached me how to play french tarot and i forgot, because you've to play to remember. Yes i'm sad because i can't find on steam a good solo french tarot game that could teach me again. There is one with some AI but i'm not sure it's enough because it's a really interesting and strategic game, and there is no tuto included.

Do you have a national cards game too ? Is it still played often in your country or people play poker ?

I'm not always here but love this website. So i chose this giveaway to... i hope you'll love it ! :D

https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/0l9€$/
(it's not a puzzle it's an anti-bot system, the solution is just in the text above - PLEASE DONT SHARE THE LINK)

$ number of french tarot special cards plus 5 will give you a letter of the alphabet, uppercase

Sorry these countries can't enter, i've nothing against you. And my blacklist is empty.

edit : duck i failed the title of the poll

Never heard of that game, I was only aware of the Tarot some people use for divination, sounds kinda complicated.

Here in Argentina the most popular card game is Truco, it's played with the Spanish deck and there's slightly different rules depending on if you play it 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3 (this one is the most fun). It's a game all about lying (truco means trick), or more accurately about chatting up your opponent to misguide them and being purposefully obtuse so it has a negative reputation among some groups who oppose teaching it to kids, it's also a game made for gambling which doesn't exactly help, regardless of that most people learn it by the time they're teenagers.
Also other South American countries have their own variants of the game with their own rules. Poker is also played here but it has an even stronger association with gambling so it's rare to see it played outside of that context.

Bump!

Ouch yes i guess divinatory is even more complicated (but i don't know it) and totally different, just the same cards.

Oh so you play truco with the 1-7 deck JMM72 talked about ?
Ah you talk a lot like in poker to misguide, that's a real difference you're right to highlight it. Tarot is strictly strategic players can talk but it doesn't really change anything, it's just the deck + the bet + the strategy in the end.

Gambling is poorly considered where you live ? Do people sometimes play with lower amount ?

No, the 1 - 12 deck is used. The 8, 9 and comodín (joker) are removed but the rest are kept.
A good chunk of the game is about talking since the first half of each hand is played before putting down any card and you can get away with straight up lying about how many points you had if you or your opponent gives up before all the cards are played. It's all about either tricking the opponent to maximize the points you get out of a hand or minimize how many points they get when you know there's no way of winning, risk and reward kinda deal but you can bullshit your way to victory if you have the skill for it.

I guess gambling is seen the same way as in most places, as a thing for adults. So of course there's people that have reservations about teaching it to kids. And in my experience most people actually bet fairly small amounts, is mostly a way of passing the time, every time I played it was something like "the team that losses pays the bill for the food" or similar. I have met guys that refuse to play for religious reasons tho, they were usually evangelical or adventists.

1-12 deck like 1 to 7 + jack + queen + king ?

After googling i just noticed you kept the traditional card suits : clubs, swords, cups and coins, they are beautiful
Here for all games we use the new ones : heart, spade, diamond, club

Oh so yes it's really almost poker in the tricking aspect, tarot if needed we can almost play full silent except the basic anouncement.

Here for gambling the same it's seen as really for adults. So poker can have this bad image, because people think there can be much money involved. But tarot is an exception, it's really seen as friends & family friendly, so if children knew to play, we could play with them.
Yes like what you explain, like this :

And in my experience most people actually bet fairly small amounts, is mostly a way of passing the time, every time I played it was something like "the team that losses pays the bill for the food" or similar.

Thank you for taking the time to explain all that you wrote, it helps a lot to understand !

No problem! I actually had fun explaining it.
Oh and BTW it's actual numbers for the jack, queen, and king; they have those figures in the cards but they're marked as 10, 11, & 12 instead of using letters.

I'm subscribed to Puzzmo (which also has all their games for free except occasionally the gimmick versions of the real ones) and they just introduced a new card-based puzzle recently which is a bit of fun! You play 4 blind poker hands of 5 (with 1 card of your choice discarded) on a 4x4 grid with the corner and discard piles also acting like another hand. They have a gimmick right now where your score contributes to a large pool which will unlock... something, which is a fun little extra bit of gamification lol.

Oh so that's what that card game is, I've always wondered. In primary school I remember seeing it in a friend's home being played by some adults, rather seriously iirc. It was a bit too involved for us I remember (we were 9 I think 🤔). The family was from Canada if I recall so they must have been from Quebec or thereabouts. I remember it because such an involved card game was somewhat unusual in Australia, as far as I know we don't really have a unique card game, mostly Anglo-Saxon hand-me-downs like poker (or unofficially Magic the Gathering while I was in high school, or it seemed like it anyways 😁).

Cheers for the giveaway and the trip down memory lane!

Yes Tarot and some other games like that are really not easy for children unfortunately, that's why they can be forgotten in the end, poker is fun and much more accessible.
Magic is really the best illustrations, i never knew to play it but i understand how they can be beautiful collectibles !

In Vietnam, people often play tiến lên, and xì dách. I only familiar with the first type of card game.
In rural area, people also play tứ sắc, tam cúc, and tổ tôm.
In recent year, UNO is also played among young people in the city (quite unpopular).

I think people only play poker in casino (for foreigner only).

Oh tiến lên looks a bit like poker with these original combinations, but a surprising fact the highest card is... number 2 !
I see the xì dách is a form of blackjack, so strongly luck-based ?
The ones from rural are super beautiful with all these drawing and characters, i love them they look a bit like mahjong.

My grandparents had a few playing cards that were thinner longer and more beautiful than standard playing cards now I know they probably are tarot's. I'm from Iraq, people only play Rummy here which is nothing more but a boring time killer. In the Gulf countries especially Saudi Arabia, Baloot is the most popular which is similar to Belote. I don't know how to play it though.

Super cool that they've Rami-Belote like too, sincerely i wouldn't have guessed because i thought (and it seems i was wrong sorry for that) gambling was frowned upon over there.
About your grandparents cards i wonder what they looked like, it's probably considered art now ? They played tarot too ?

Thank you for these story and informations, it's very nice from you !

Marseille tarot is pretty much only used for divination, it's not really made for playing (and its name is actually a trap since it doesn't come from Marseille at all, but originates from Italy).

Bisca looks a bit like tarot too, i guess there have been many variations of this sort of cardsgame !

Ace - 11 points
7 - 10 points
King... 4 points
That's a huge difference of points you've here !

Hmm, I’ve never heard of French Tarot; I thought Tarot cards were only used for fortune-telling.

The card games I know are a few variations of Poker, Twenty-one (analogue of Blackjack), Durak (fool, a traditional Russian/Soviet game), Kozyol (goat), Burkozyol and Solitaire. I think there were some others, but I haven't played cards much in the last twenty years. Poker became really popular here in the early to mid-2000s, and now most people play either poker or blackjack. Before that, everyone usually played Durak or Twenty-one either for fun, for wishes, for silly things like drinking warm water until you puke or for a strip:)

In the old days, Preferans was also popular among elderly people, my granddad played it a lot for small sums of money with other pensioners, but nowadays it's almost impossible to find someone who knows the rules.

Thanks a lot, i'm super happy to read all these details from you. I see unfortunately that poker tends to erase your local cards culture too.
Yes tarot is used for both, but Melusca above is right italian tarot de marseille is more used for divination, while tarot nouveau is the one used to play french tarot. The cards are really different.

The 2 games you quote especially Durak and Preferans look a bit like tarot :
Durak on the attacker vs defender aspect
Preferans on the biddings/contracts aspect
We even share a similar word "misère", with a bad bid because we have no good hand.

Durak
Preferans
