More info here

Below are the changes that will take place on March 9th. If you are already protected by the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator (or if you add the security feature to your account today), the first two points below will not impact you:

Trade hold duration will be increased to 15 days (for long-time Steam friends the duration will remain 1 day)

Listing on the Steam Community Market will have a hold of 15 days before an item can be sold

Steam Support will no longer restore items that have left accounts following a successful trade or market transaction (a process that previously created duplicates of original items)

wait wait wait... so if i do a trade with someone, and even if we both use the authenticator so the trade goes through immediately, a completely legitimate PROPER trade through valves trading system, and the guy i trade with REVOKES the game ive traded, valve WONT undo the trade? EVEN if ive done EVERYTHING they ask to make the trade secure and proper?

If you do everything that makes the trade secure and proper, they cant revoke the game (games can only be revoked within 3 weeks, while gifts has a 1 month trade restriction when bought)
*Btw trade has never been undone, only items duplicated.

Guys, even while Archi is against using his bot on the main accounts, BUT it has 2FA function, which I am using for both of my bots without any problem. The only thing you need is a phone capable of receiving SMS borrow your parents' phone! and fundamental reading skill. No need for emulator or even an Indian $4 smartphone.

Pfff... agreeing with all the points people have said. Although I recently attached the authenticator to my phone it is really annoying for EVERYONE. I know it is supposed to benefit us but the restrictions are just ridiculous.

What the actual fuck. What a load of shit. They put all this bullshit in place, yet they still can't be fucked giving Windows phones their Steam app. Eat a dick, Valve.

Thank you, Valve, for trying to save my money. Now I can spend those money on other sites. Hell, spending the money on a mobile games seems better idea than Steam.

Ah I don't think this is affecting the purchasing of games from the store, just inventory items

I think it's pretty cool that Valve is taking steps to dismantle its own monopoly by making their competition look better and better. Props on that.

Story of my life day.
Have Windows phone.
Tried WinAuth. Got asked to enter verification code sent to email - did that. Enter code sent to your phone by SMS - didn't get no fucking code. Ages (in internet time) pass - nothing, so I press cancel. ~40 minutes later get SMS from Shteam. Open WinAuth again - need to enter code sent to e-mail. Except there's no fucking new emails; old code doesn't work.
Frustrated, I install BlueStacks (Android emulator). Ok, now I'll just search for the Shteam ap.. have to connect to google ****. Entering passwords, confirmation codes. Finally finish all these stupid quests. Now, just find the Shteam app.. there it is. Ok! Install.. a-f-o-k-i-n-g error. Can't install the goddamn app >:L

You need the Desktop Authenticator, not WinAuth. Since 1.01, it is rather nice, and the 1.03 is quite comfortable and portable. Plus finally it is not constantly flagged as a virus.

Thanks for the tip! But since I already got WinAuth to work and it's pretty much as simple as it gets, is there a reason to bother with DA?

WinAuth can only log you in, you cannot do trading with it since you never receive trade confirmations. So you literally never can use the trade window, even to send a coupon. Desktop Authenticator lets you confirm trade and can now even do little taskbar popups to quickly do that instead of opening and confirming each individual trade in a new window.

Oh, thanks a lot! Although if I understand correctly trade confirmations are availible in versions past 3.3.7:

Ah. Never mind my message then. When last I checked, WinAuth didn't have this feature. In that case, it is just a question of preference which one you use.

So if I don't have a smart/android phone, I'll have to wait 15 days for my market stuff to be sold.

Awesome.

They should've at least given option to disable this.

So, if I want to translate it from Management Bullshit to English, it means:
"Still nobody cares about our mobile app so we now impose further restrictions on anyone who haven't caved in and started using it."
And if you cannot have it because they only released it on two operating systems, then you are now officially classified as a secondary citizen.
The fact that the majority of the people outside the US don't have an Android/iPhone? Who cares, as a Murican company, they only care about Murican customers.

As long as it doesn't affect authenticator owners, I don't even mind. I have it on phone, but people without smartphone can just get Droid4X or something. You have a computer, right?

I have a smartphone, I just straight up don't want to give Valve my mobile number. It's only for friends and family, and I've deliberately kept it clean of any business so I don't receive marketing, political, "research", or other nuisance calls which I do get on my landline phone all the time (despite it being on my country's Do Not Call list since that has too many exemptions. Which is why you only get my answering machine on it and the ringer is turned off). The only time I ever gave it to a business was when I gave it to my ISP technical services department when they were fixing a fault on my landline, and six months later I started getting spam sms's about their other services. I could stop them but with a US company...? Never again.

I do not trust Valve to keep the number safe, especially with recent events, and I also don't trust them not to sell it at some point or spam me, no matter what they say.

Oh, also, the more desperately they try to grab my number, the less inclined I become to give it!

tl;dr: Fuck Valve.

Kinda sad that you're only the first person I see that does not want to use the mobile authenticator for the same reason as me: privacy. I would never give my phone number to Valve for something as trivial as card trading and their ever-increasing hurdles just make me more resistant.

Since I really want to keep trading I ended up getting a free fake US phone number so I could activate it on my farming account. I didn't dare use it on my main account since I cannot be sure I will always be in control of that nunber. So if anything the authenticator made my farming account less secure then it was before

Have trust, he's not the only one, but this is the Facebook age and privacy is a bad, bad word.

"Surely you shouldn't care!
...unless you've got something to hide?"

edit: that said, the main privacy sensitive issue is the Android app, I don't think giving Valve your number simply to activate the authenticator in either an emulator or software authenticator like WinAuth is a major problem.

Still, it's annoying.

One other annoyance with the Mobile Authenticator, besides the fact that it isn't available for Windows phones, is that unlike almost every other 2FA code generator in existence, there's no way to have it active on more than one phone at the same time.

Google Authenticator, VIP Access, Authy, and numerous other 2FA apps can be setup on multiple phones to work with the exact same accounts, so that if you lose your main phone, or if you want to allow your significant other to have easy access to the same accounts, there's no problem (the only exception I know of is eBay, which unlike Paypal, doesn't allow you to have more than one VIP Access ID active at the same time).

This is how you make people use the mobile authentication. Valve is awesome in finding ways to put their stuff on our devices.

I think it should be called a mobile DLC.
