I see so many of these that I've begun to wonder whether some contributors check for winner's comments or something of the sort.

I use this filter to just read the rest of the comments. But I get dissapointed when the winner of my giveaway has said nothing, not even a thanks. So yes it's courtesy too.

Even more disappointing when the winner doesn't say thanks when you send them it :(

That's because every commenter gets a copy of Skyrim.

this tracker site i frequent has a thanks button :D
while there it helps me remember which torrent version i dlded/last episode i watched by clickin 'show thanks', here, on the other hand, it would be a good addition imo cus if one is to boost one's comment ratio in a righteous manner, one should use the forum where one can't type mindless thankyous

Yes, people would write meaningful "+1", "^" or similar completely deeply analytical messages. Comment counter merely shows certain level of activity but I would not use it for comprehending anything else from it.

+1

Edit: I am a terrible disappointment to myself. :-(

I expect that any other type of reply to my comment would have been disappointing.

If you get a chance to win games for free, it's only natural to show your gratitude for having that chance. People who make giveaways definitely appreciate it if you spare few seconds of your time to say your thanks. Thanking is not mandatory, but it makes people feel their contributions are appreciated.

I stopped doing it cause the moment you start saying "Thanks" out of habit instead of gratitude is when you just need to stop.

Honestly, in my own giveaways at least, I prefer a bit of conversation rather than just variations of "thanks". I don't discourage it, mind you, I'd just prefer something else.
