I have major categories like adventure (point & click), FPS, RPG, strategy and so on. The clear candidates go there. That reduces the main 'pool' a bit and makes it easier for me to pick a new game when I feel like playing a certain kind of game. I'd never try to categorise them all, but I think/feel like this works.

Games I tend to come back, I use the favorites feature.
Games I'm playing right now, right-click the Steam tray icon and launch them that way.
For the rest I just CTRL+F in the Steam Library. Anything more than that usually just turns into a lot of work or a giant mess.

I have a similar scheme, and I think this organizes the library much better. Mine's more broad, though: Ongoing, Upcoming, Done, Mods, and Reserve (for all the junk).

I go by genre. In some cases where I have ton of games like the 800 Sam & Max titles I put them all in their own category. I also do this for Valve games.
Casual/Puzzle is over saturated. If it's 2D, pixely, indie, whatever, I put it in that category. A lot of those games should probably be in other categories. Action/Adventure is getting crowded too, I should probably add a Sandbox category for games like GTA and others.
Games (uncategorized) is basically where I keep all the retard shit like betas, mac versions, old versions like gfwl batman, duplicates like company of heroes, etc.

Here's my strategy. I don't really care about categorizing by genre. I categorize about what I care about most: when or if I'm going to play it.

I categorise my games based on how I obtained them, so there's a shitton of categories
For starters, there's a Miscellaneous category for games I got mostly from Steam Store purchases, there's an Indiegala Giveaways for keys snagged from the "spam every 5 minutes 1 entry", there's a category for each bundle I've ever gotten
I put a special category for Valve though XD

I used to have In Progress, Anytime, New, Unfinished, Finished, Problems, Dislike, Early Access, Mac Versions, and anything that wasn't installed wasn't categorized. Unfortunately, while checking out the Depressurizer software for auto-categorizing Steam games, I made a mistake and lost all my categories. :( Since then, I've let Depressurizer set up categories based on how Steam classifies the games, because why not? Mine are gone and I don't want one humongous unsorted list. I don't think this auto-categorizing is ideal for me though, so I'm wondering if I can eventually take the time to combine it with my previous system in some way.

Never thought about categorizing my games... but now I think I need "SHIT" category just to avoid looking at some titles by accident. :)

Pretty much like that. link

I'm far too busy to do too much, so I only have a few lists.
Backlog Attack
Now Playing
NOPE
Trading Cards
Backlog Attack is for the games I'm going to review soon, NOPE contains all of the stuff that I dislike, and Trading Cards is for the ones that I need to play so that I can collect their cards. ^_^

Right now it is in three categories based on where they are installed, Hard Drive, PC, and Uninstalled, but I think I might switch it to genres.

Completed: Games I already played through and probably won't play again.
Demo: Game demos, free weekend, other useless junk.
Humble Bundle: I called this category "Humble Bundle", but it actually just contains every bundles I own.
Non-Steam: Non-Steam games, duh.
Not Installed: Games I haven't installed yet.
Updates Required: Games that require updates, or games that are not yet fully downloaded.
Games: Just everything else.

As my collection increases I have created several categories for my games so I can find them quickly. But sometimes I have trouble deciding what game belongs in which category. And some games could be in two or three categories. So I'm asking you all that have tons of games what kind of categories do you have for your collection?
Here are my current categories:
Controller (for games that can use a controller)
FPS (first person shooter)
Meh (games I don't like)
Misc (games I haven't categorized yet or can't decide)
Platformer
Puzzle
Racing
Rogue-Like
RPG
Space (anything space including shmups and 4x)
Tower Defense
Turn-Based Strategy
The big problem I have is with Platformer and Puzzle. Especially platfomers, because there are traditional platformers like old-school Sonic, Mega Man, etc., but then there are also puzzle platformers that often take place in just one room and are not side-scrolling, such as Escape Goat.
And with the Puzzle category there are casual puzzle games like Bejeweled and Angry Birds but then there are ones that have a story to them like Puzzle Quest.
What do you guys do?
